  • There's a reason this is considered the golden age of film.

  • I just got cast as her and i can not wait!!

  • For me one of loveliest numbers from the string of great post war musical.

  • Smoshpit

  • Thank you for posting this. One of my all time favorite musicals. I was 22 (1967) when I saw this, with my then wife, at the Fisher Theater in Detroit.

    Better days my Friends...better days.

  • it does not get any better than this!!!!

  • Loved it. I saw him years ago appearing in a hotel (forget which one) in DC. He actually came over to our table and sang to me. He sang, "If I were the only boy in the world." It was my birthday...he didn't know it...but it was the best present I got.

  • The first film my mother took me to see and it's still my favourite!!! Wonderful music!

  • What a haunting melody...

  • This is soo romantic! If I was Julie, I would die!!! :) I love this musical! MacRae and Jones are brilliant together! Specially in Oklahoma! Two great musicals with two amazing actors and singers!

  • We just put on this musical at my school and I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it

  • My sister was listening to pandora, when all of a sudden, this song played. We looked at each other and immediately fell in love with it! Now i can't stop listening to it! :)

  • D': uh hu hu huuuuuu so beautiful!! Just say you love each other!!!

  • Now these two are simply the best. Classic, pure and perfect. Can't beat it!

  • SOOO perfect - touching, demure, passionate, thrilling, innocent - modern singers note this is how it should and used to be done!

  • yay! this is my schools musical this year!

  • Way to go, Mrs. Partridge!

  • I saw this play at Interlochen over the summer and by the end I was a wet noodle. It was so touching! I just sat and cried. My mom said the musical wasnt very good but I love it with all my heart!! This play is honestly one of my favorites. Makes me cry everytime...

  • People today have no idea of the talent that the stars of the old days had, and how much we loved our old motion pictures.

  • One of the most beautiful and sad songs I've ever heard. An old friend recently reminded me of this masterpiece. Yeah, just thinking of the lyrics brought tears to my eyes.

  • Incredible power - why world, why did we lose this?!

  • How beautiful. So sad that young people today are not exposed to such sweetness and beauty.

  • I could never understand why this fantastic musical drama never seemed to get the accolades it deserved, certainly here in the UK.Next to South Pacific it was & still is a favourite of mine.

  • One of my favorite musicals of all time(the other South Pacific). With one of the greatest standards of all time: Soliloquy.

  • @uniquejuggalo Amen, Amen, Amen !!! .......and throw GYPSY in there, too, will ya ??

  • There was charm and beauty and first-rate singing by Gordon MacRae who was America's finest Baritone in Musicals while Shirley Jones added sweetness to

an era when this country recognized quality in more ways than one.

  • When I was a kid I used to absolutly love this film. but now I can't remember any of it :l

  • IM PLEASED TO SEE IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO DISSOLVES INTO TEARS WHEN I WATCH THIS (ESPECIALLY WHEN "YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE" (WHEN BILLY DIES AND AT THE "GRADUATION" CEREMONY" WHEN HE TELLS JULIE THAT HE ALWAYS LOVED HER (THAT HE WISHED HE'D BEHAVED HAS ANYONE HEARD FRENCH SINGER RICHARD ANTHONY'S VERSION?

  • I MIGHT be using this as my audition song for drama school to study musical theatre :) just uploaded a video of me singing it today, it's a lovely song to sing. :)

  • Gordon MacRae--one of Hollywood's best voices--and a hunk and a half. Those puppy dog brown eyes, boyish grin, and sturdy physique makes me melt. Sigh.

  • @windstorm1000 Amen sister!! :o)

  • @windstorm1000 double amen, sister!

  • @heartxtime No, that's 'brother'---Gordon gets gay guys going too--ha, ha

  • No voice dubbing needed here! What a great movie. Tears. of course

  • One of my all time favorite moments in a musical. The magic of it never dies.

How can one not be moved. I love this musical.

  • @kylane2011 It takes place in 1873.

  • Viva Acappella ladies - The song appears twice in this clip, so watch all the way through!!!

    Grace

  • I'm trying out for the musical soon, but I'm a really bad singer. Are there any non singing roles (despite it being a musical >.<)

  • @akamaru4321 The bad guy that Rod Stieger plays has, I think, one song, which he sings badly. Why don't you try out for that part. It's quite a big part. Good luck!

  • @sp

this film is Carousel , Rod Stieger was in the film Oklahoma ..acechick3000

  • It's Shirley not Shirely - how is it you people do not have the respect to spell correctly the names of the people you profess to admire.

  • One of my favorite musicals. There has been some discussion regarding spousal abuse in this movie. You have to consider the time period this takes place and put the whole thing in context. It is what it is. This was a taboo subject. It is a beautiful love story, yet it shows the dark side. It is a heart wrenching story.

  • I'M IN LOOOOOOOOOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is one great musical and a lovely song!!!

  • There are so many versions of this song. This is one of the best.

  • Beautiful love song - expresses the tender feeling we all have but sometimes are afraid to express.

  • "Only those in the cutting-froom, knew how many takes it took! Live, Stage acting, is a totally different creation!"

  • Jeo, I agree...that undercurrent of abuse gives this film an unsettling but undeniable power. Mainly, of course, it's the beautiful melodies that remain (with me).

  • @jtanistube

If you would, please explain it to me. I know the outlines the play, and how the character Jigger is a bad fellow, but I can't think of the connection you are making. And I'n not being provocatively "misunderstanding."

    What is the connection?

  • My all time favorite song. Thank you "Rogers and Hammenstein" doug matley

  • When I first saw this as a teenager, I couldn't explain why I was crying. It was the haunting and beautiful melody. After living through things in life, I could understand better the pathos of the scene. So I cried more; but still love this, my favorite musical (and i don't usually like musicals).

  • @jtanistube If you like this one, check out 'Brigadoon', with Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse. The two best musicals of all time.

  • I dont know what is this, but.. i fall in love.

  • We're doing this for our show choir camp!:)

  • Yes we have a very pleasant memories with our Love Theme Song with a beautiful St. Paul University Nun but all turn into a misery for me after she becomes a butterfly lover to another lover priest whom she works with in the church choir in Ermita. I did never tought that Nuns could be that playgirl .

  • This musical is quite magical, but the ending disturbed me. If a woman is in love with a man, but that man hits her, it will feel like a kiss. I wonder how many men hit women they loved at the time. Does anyone agree with this or find the idea unsettling? Sometimes films are like magical spells, emotionally arousing & hynotic, so could an evil idea slip through this way?

  • @Jeorney For many years I felt that way about this musical. Then I saw the British revival. The line about the hit being like a kiss is in a scene between the daughter and the mother (Julie) and Julie's sub textual reaction was "Yes, it can happen but it is absolutely the last thing I would ever wish for you". That put the whole musical into a new perspective for me.

  • @Jeorney I find it quite unsettling. While this film is full of beautiful music, it is incredibly dysfunctional and, IMO, romanticizes domestic abuse.

  • @herlastvoyage People appear to be analysing this musical as if it is set in the present period. Although I am not sure of the period it is supposed to portray, I assume early 1900's, therefore it would present with domestic abuse and other atrocities, but don't forget, in the early days, domestic abuse was rife in many homes. That was the norm. It is only in our more modern times that we are now aware of the term, domestic abuse.

  • Thank God we have pleasant memories with good music and I don't have to listen to the head banging music of today. The computer has been an escape and we can listen to music we remember best. I think I'll move over to the music from the Sound of Music, close my eyes and remember. Thanks to all the people that put all this together.

  • Haven't seen this in years-thank you for posting this!

  • imet them in boothbay harbor when they were filming this movie,!

  • No, Frank Sinatra signed up to do OKLAHOMA but they were filming that movie twice, once in regular film and second time in VISTAVISION which was a new wide-screen version. Frank was never signed or offered Carousel. Gordon MacRae was then suggested by Shirley Jones to play Curley in Oklahoma when Frank walked off.

  • I want to sing like Gorden Macrae. I always have.

  • "Longing to tell you..but afraid and shy..I'd let my golden chances pass me by.." Reminds me of 2 summers ago when I saw this play with my grandparents and was talking to my crush every night..the funny thing is now it's a completely new guy:P

  • this movie and Carmen Jones are probably the best musicals ever , you'd have a heart of stone to keep from crying. all the Liverpool fans should listen to 'You'll never walk alone' from this movie. Fantastic singing. Thank you for this gem,

    Bobbysnr.

  • Originally Frank Sinatra was to do this movie, but quit when he found out he would have to do every seen twice.

  • @dahsuerk Glad he dropped out! Nothing could top sexy Mr. MacRae with that ringing, virile baritone.

  • I may be doing this song as a duet for a community theatre concert. I'd never seen Carousel, but this song is beautiful. I'm honored to be asked to sing it and I hope I can do it justice.

  • that lady reminds me of Amy Adams

  • Exquisite enough to break a heart, albeit an old one.

  • imagine Frank Sinatra as Billy Bigelow! It nearly happened.

  • oops, it is from the Hungarian writer Ferenec Molnar, see "Liliom" in Wikepedia for the full story.

  • I have not seen this for over fifty years, and it kills me in two minutes. A beautifull melody, sentiment, and singing. It was originally a French novel , but I cannot remember by whom. Due at a neighbours barbacue in fifteen minutes and here am I slaughtered with red eye's ! Thankfully its a high pollen count so a bleary eyed old git in a corner will not look out of place. Thankyou so much for posting this jem.

  • What a song! And two beautiful voices -no wonder people get tears in their eyes(including this 58 yo guy from Australia)Thank You.

  • She has a beautiful voice, and he a strong one, great movie.

  • My favorite song of all time. Not just musical theatre-wise. This is my all time favorite.

  • this is wonderful :)

  • i love this movie. gordon macrae and shirley jones just made all of the amazing rodgers and hammerstein music and storylines EVEN BETTER. i'm saying this as a teenager who greatly appreciates music and theatre music.....

  • I read that Frank Sinatra was originally cast to play the male role but declined when he found out that the scenes had to be filmed twice. Gordon is great in the role and probably better than Frank would have been anyway. As for Shirley, They don't make classy women like that much anymore.

  • Whoa..when my mum and dad split up...he wouldnt let my mum come home...I went to my grans to see her and my grandparents where so quiet...I know now they were worried for us...my mum was at work and I watched this film with my Gran...lol...I was with my m8 albert but I just cried when I saw this song...the guy looks like my dad...my parents are together now again...I would NEVER tell my m8s but I cry when I see this song lol...albert is a cool bud...haha I think he cried too but I never noticed

  • wonderful

  • How tremendously handsome is he?

  • that was beautiful. they don't make movies like that anymore.

  • they don't make ladies and gentlemen like these two anymore..

  • Possibly one of the most perfect duets ever written and ...sung....perfectly

  • Thanks for posting this for the generation that may have missed this! There are few duets in Americana that can go toe-to-toe with this!

  • This is one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful scenes & songs in musical theater. It's timeless. Two rather flawed people trying their best to grasp love & what it 's about, an ethereal thing at best. We've all been there one way or another.

  • My school just did this musical they did a very good job! this son gis very pretty BUT I HATE BILLY!

  • I want this movie on Blu Ray I recorded It off of educational television network at 720p I do Not know what format the television stations use but hard disk drive crashed & I lost this movie & Gigi I have got these movies on DVD but I think Its only 480p

  • i am so in love with this song...my all time favorite!!! Just the whole scene is beautifully done

  • Haha i had to do this for my high school play, I was Enoch :s

  • Now this is a musical!

I was looking forward to doing this or "Singin' in the Rain" for our school musical, but no, we're doing "High School 'Freakin' Musical!"

  • Wonderful. Very sincere and touching. They don't make them like that anymore.

  • Shirley Jones may have been disappointed how that movie turned out but she has said in a recent film that it was her favorite song and that Richard Rogers had said it was his favorite. I don't think anyone does it better than these 2.

  • @lizziewho why did she not like the film ? what did she say specifically ?.

  • Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae make a fine and believable pair. They are convincing in their love songs and the quality of their singing and acting here is quite fine. I just bought the film version on dvd as I was so impressed with these two!

  • Guess I wasn't the only 18 year old to fall in love with Shirley Jones in 1956, there must have been thousands!

  • Is this Mr. Partridge? Did he run out on the family years after this? Did he ever meet Reuben? (ahahaa--just kidding.)

  • beautiful music - very stiff direction

compare this scene to "People Will Say We're in Love" - same 2 actors, performing with much better direction

  • @BernardProfitendieu My take is you have two different moods. In Oklahoma, more light-hearted atmosphere. In Carousel, more serious. This scene called for them to act restrained and yet yearning for each other. Not bad direction at all. Just -- different.

  • @pegcage you're being too kind - there's a big difference between restraint and standing around awkwardly not knowing what to do with their hands ... this scene is just poorly directed. Shirley Jones herself has said the way this movie turned out was a big disappointment.

  • One of my all time favorites. Maybe I spelled it wrong last time.

  • Wonderful show. I played Billy Bigelow in my first Amdram performance for the Red Rose Company in Lancaster England. His soliloquy is enough to tax any performer. Thanks R&H for a beautiful musical! Still cry after all these years!

  • makes me cry everytime i watch it.....

  • @hedwigkiesler The direction isn't that bad!

  • i'm singing this as an audition piece for the music man...u can probably guess what part i want lol...but anyway this song is so beautiful :)

  • time is endless living in an circle of life, love is rare to find true love is something only a few find, these days its a fast life, longing to tell you but a affriad and shy. how many people can say this. when they find that person. brillant video

  • my single most favorite of all time.....heart-wrenching poetry, music, and drama....and what voices.......

  • was i 6 when i fell for shirley and this song and musical? "soon you'd leave me, off you would go in the mist of day". that's the way it has always been for me. but when you turn into a fat drunk.....well....who cares? :)

  • One of the best songs in musical history performed by two of the best performers in movie musicals. Saw it for the first time some 40 plus years ago and it is timeless, touching and ultimately heartbreaking.

  • this is a masterpiece and if anyone thinks differently they are idiots and have no souls . it touches your heart , magnificent

  • One of the best film adaptations of a musical. They actually cast people who could sing. It's hard to watch this movie without dissolving into tears.

  • @joeparkson Couldn't agree with you more. My career was as an actor in NY for many years.

"Broadway Cares" did benefits every year for various charities. The 3rd year I did the benefit I was asked if I would do a duet and I told the organizers it was fine. To make this short, I got a note asking to perform this song with Shirley Jones. I jumped at the chance. Tho I had performed to large audiences I never sang with one of the theatre's big names. She was amazing; her voice beautiful as ever.

  • shirley is truly unbeatable. she sings effortlessly.

  • I'm so nervous, I'm doing this song for my audition tomorrow but I can't reach the notes between 1:55-2:07.

    Any tips? :/

  • @MrsDanielRadcliffeN1 choose another song. If you can't hit the notes, then keep working it but sing something else for an audition.

  • I think Shirley Jones was the most beautiful actress and singer. Gordan McCrae just wonderful too. Never will there be anyone like these two again.

  • my fav musical with my fav performers..thxs for posting

  • Her phrasing is strange.

  • As a young boy my Mom played all the great musicals like this one. Thankyou so much for bringing back Mom. I can see her know.

  • hunny im 16 n i freakin love shirley jones n gordon macrae. they're amazing

  • @edwardc101 - Demonstrates your ability to appreciate wonderful music.

  • @raymonda100

    lol ikr

  • omg how i love this misical and Gorden McCrae even betta

  • Nothing like this old classic musical. So charming, bursting with hope and promise.

  • Breaks my heart. Thanks for posting.

  • I always had to think why they finally get together when she says "They're coming down by themselves. Just their time to, I recon". Now I finally get it. They don't need a push from outside, they just have to do it. Gordon got the metaphor a lot quicker than I did ;) Beautiful song and wonderful acting!

  • music doesn't get more sublime than this........espec. the passage starting at 2:55

  • Beautiful. I adore Shirly Jones and Gordon Mcrae. Fell in love with them after i watched oklahoma :) These are the type of shows i'm hoping to perform in when i'm older xx

  • Fabulous - sets a standard of charm that will be enjoyed for ever.

  • Thanks for posting this...it's soooooooowonderful!

  • Beautiful.....just perfect....What actors can sing and act, and have takes without breaks? Thanks for posting this...:-)

  • What a film. I need my tissues!

  • Up amongst the greats!

    .

And that's where they belong, as of course Rogers and Hamerstein.

    .

Happy day eh! and what we got now?

    .

Ami Whinehouse and Lady Gaga. The mind boggles

  • it's true she is lovely and really great but he is just wonderful, and to me his voice just conveys so much much more. makes me nearly cry

  • Richard Rogers wrote some of the finest songs for the musical stage and this probably the best.

  • @iduefoscari I truly SECOND that. I don't call Rodgers and Hammerstein 'the big ampersand' for nothing.

  • The most beautiful song ever written.....

  • This is a great song! I'm singing the part that starts at 5:10 for an audition next week.

  • Always a piece that inspires soul-searching...

Thank you for your time and effort that was spent here!

  • beautiful lyrics, beautiful music, great actors :)

  • has anyone seen this done by rene fleming and duane(not sure of his last name)?

  • R.I.P. Gordon, Mere-z, and Bruce...

  • The most beautifully shot and most beautiful performance of the most beautiful ballad ever written in the greatest film musical of all time.

  • i had to sing this song for an audition and i started crying at first! this song always brings tears to my eyes, and it sounds cheesy but it is such a moving song!

  • @Emarie083 Not cheesy at all - it just shows your intense appreciation of and feeling for beautiful music and meaningful lyrics.

  • @Emarie083 Not cheesy at all. I'm a 59 year old male, and my tears are streaming down my face as I listen to this while writing to you.

  • Best musicals for songs, Carousel, 7 Brides F7B's, My Fair Lady, Les Mis., Oliver.

    My humble opinnion of course.

  • "Gulp"

  • What a beautiful look into the past! There is nothing like this today. There isn't much interest in this type of real talent and quality anymore. It's such a shame. I am glad that I can still appreciate these musicals. Rodgers & Hammerstein and Lerner & Lowe were the best.

  • My Father and Mother on their honeymoon in 1947 stayed at The Hotel New Yorker and saw the original Broadway Show and cast-John Raitt, (Bonnie Raitt's dad), as Billy, my beautiful father said "he was transported to another world..." It was their favorite musical all their lives. My father who was a truly a heartfelt singer, and my mother would always ask him to sing "If I Loved You."

  • thanks the two most beautiful voices of the 50s look up if i loved you the reprise omg so beautiful

  • What an absolutely brilliant performance of a brilliant performance. This made my otherwise boring evening special. It brought me to tears.

    Barbara Kent, author

SUCCESS In the Word of the Masters

  • This is a beautiful song, a wonderful movie. Thanks for this post.

  • *sigh* It's a shame something like this could never be made today.

  • Love love love. Thank you for sharing this!

  • an absoulte classic .i love shirley jones and im a teenager .i iwsh more people my age apprricated films like this.

  • @Ballerinabbz Oh I just adore old musicals, and I'm a teenager as well. I really grew up watching The King and I, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, GiGi, and My Fair Lady while my friends all watched Nickelodeon. It's great there are other young people out there who feel the same way.

  • @Ballerinabbz I was the same when I was a teenager- eventually you'll find someone who appreciates it too. My best friend and I now get all of the Rogers and Hammerstein movies and sing along when we come back from university.

  • Me too...but then we are two already..:)

  • @Ballerinabbz o i love it,im 18 and we are doing this as our school play, this song is really romantic,:)

  • @Ballerinabbz I am a teen too and I appreciate these films. : )

  • @Ballerinabbz, I am a teen too and I appreciate these films. : )

  • @Ballerinabbz I completely agree

  • @Ballerinabbz me too.

  • @Ballerinabbz yeah it is a real shame tbh, todays teenagers think this stuff is soppy and corny... and I'm 25!! i grew up with these musicals since 1985!!

  • @Ballerinabbz Good for you, when I was a teenager which wasn't long ago, I loved Shirley Jones too! You just know how to appreciate the good things in life. It's good for people to broaden their horizons and try new things.

  • @Ballerinabbz I do!

  • @Ballerinabbz I totally agree!!! I am a teen too, and I love these old musicals. They r beautiful.

  • Shirley Jones on was one of the most underappreciated Opra singers. She sou sing and range.

  • They sure don't make the movies like this anymore. Lovely. Thanks for uploading.

  • One of the most beautiful tunes.
