I don't know if I agree with this, he definitely does not overact, and I feel like it is more of a conversation, but there are so many dynamic changes that I felt like he could have made that he simply missed out on. Overall it just seems like a superficial performance, bare bones.
It's really nothing bad. "Gesticulate" means what it sounds like . . . articulating through gestures.
It was the left hand thing that threw me. He's saying that he's drawing attention to his left hand. The reason he's doing that is because it's the hand that his wedding ring is on, so by emphasizing the ring, he's emphasizing the face that he's married.
Because the person he's gesticulating at is a woman, presumably young and attractive--and at this point in the show, we already know about Jamie's "little girlfriends" (from Kathy's song "See I'm Smiling"). The reason their marriage falls apart is because neither is ready for it--Kathy's not ready for "for better or for worse", and Jamie's not ready for "forsaking all others".
Do you know - as a Brit who was never lucky enough to see Norbert Leo Butz do this role, I have been listening to this soundtrack for at least 3 years and this song has always cracked me up as I imagine what facial expressions and gestures he would use when performing it. And watching this for the first time - I was right on every detail! His voice really shows off what his body is doing! Super song, super performance.
thank God someone agrees with me lol... some people are like... "She is amazing". and yeah i agree that she technically is a good singer... but her sound is a little whiney (sp?)
I both agree and disagree. SHe can, at moments, be somewhat whiney....but....in the case of this particular song, she is doing that on purpose as part of the character. She is rehearsing for an audition and is terribly nervous...also, the character isn't supposed to be a great singer. You'll notice that when "Cathy" is singing it sounds a bit different than when Sherie is singing.
I love how relaxed he is! He's doing it realisticly! x

Norbert makes it look so easy. This song is so often OVER ACTED. The story is already funny...just tell it. Such a relief to watch!!

It doesn't hurt that he's got one of the best deadpans in the business. He's an amazing performer, and I love watching him in anything he does.

@phoenixnyc Haha yeah.. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels... 'This little piggy' - 'Nope..' Awesome deadpan.

@MorbidJoy They are not saying that Norbert is overacting. They are saying he is doing it right and what most actors in this role do is overact.

So true. This is one of the very few naturalistic musicals out there, so i guess it's hard for some actors to adjust.

Wow, I am such a loser. It took me this long to figure out what the whole left hand thing meant.
Everything else would just echo what most everyone has already said, except that I wish this song had been included in the vocal selections.

no worries, 'gesticulating' kind of threw me for a loop the first couple of times i heard the song haha
i tries using it in a conversation once and it just made me feel dirty : )

me neither. I mean, she's a great singer, but I just don't find her tone all that pleasing to me personally. But that's just me.

She's supposed to. She sounds much less annoying (to me, anyway) in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
