Most people should feel lucky that they can never fully fathom the depths of this song..."Such victims were of a quite distinct nature. There was no visible change in their appearance;they maintained their customary relationships as respected as ever, and yet they were changed, almost inexplicably to themselves...Their lives were not like those snapped off or broken, but they had become introspective; lost to others, they vainly sought to find themselves."
@beedieeyez, this song was released in 1978. I doubt you were even born then. Legend is a most overused word these days but Tom is definitely one of the last true remaining musical legends. Oh, and he isn't too bad an actor either. Just enjoy the music for what it is... honest, unlike a lot of shite that is released these days.
Could anyone tell me what's the most fitting scale to improvise over this song? I thought melodic minor but if anyone got some advice it would be appreciated
Oh, but you understand "something" better because... what? And the fact that he's white has what to do with anything? White people can't have the blues?... can't play the blues? That tired old argument went by the wayside a long time ago (long before this song was released in the 70s in fact). Too bad you're stuck back there. What the hell do you know about anything? Nada. You're full of it..
@beedieeyez - Oh dear, I think you may have said that out loud.
Waits is one of the most imitated, covered and revered artists of the last FORTY years. Waits was setting the bar when you were still shitting yellow - ´dude´. And I assume that by ´white imitating ...´ you mean imitating ´black´. Here´s a clue for you. more or less ALL pop music is white imitating black, where do you think the blues came from?
More than brilliant song that I have cherished for many, many years. In die Beschrenkung kennt Man den Meister. (Sorry for any mistakes, my German is quite lousy).
Tom Waits is a true poet. a lauereate of our times, (Bukowski does come to mind) his words are so true to many of us, this man is a true hero, see him live and he will always give his all to the audience, a true genius, this man deserves superstardom.
mmm... I have to say again...I feel I'm a sprite, dancing in Tom Wait's garden after midnight... really I'm in the sweet, sweaty, living room of my apartment, dancing with ebb and tide just in jeans, barefeet and bracelets... and closed eyes, emotion...
Tom carries a song like an emotion you weren't sure you wanted anyone to know about, and drags it lucidly but wet, down a mountain of hope... into a question mark. Leaves you there, walks off stage... I will appreciate his existence forever.
Tom Waits is always where we've been, no matter how many times we get drunk or fucked up and grab our crotches and pretend we're the cool heartless heroes of imagined jazz related high end novels that nobody ever reads. You wake up wonderin around in a haze and wonder why yer cat's the only one that tolerates you. Bless yer heart, poet.
The contrast of the roughness of Waits' voice with the tenderness of the lyrics he writes is one of the wonders of the musical world... HIs songs display the aesthetic of the gutter and the ghetto, yet his words are so tender and universally appealing that one has the sense of sitting in a gutter, looking at the stars...
Just show me another artist who is as gritty and varied! Truly unique and a musical treasure! All heart, art and inspiration. I hope to enjoy much much more!,,,,,, Thanks Tom!!!
See that guy with that beautiful gal on his arm turnin' all the heads on the Midway. He's already begun to build the fortress to keep that gal in protected captivity;"Man, I must really be sump'n". But the fortress is to house his own ego and he doesn't realize that he's really buildin' his own trojan horse and once that gal steps into the tantalizing starring role of 'Victim' ,for which she has rehearsed so well as she passed every brick , she emerges to victimize that poor bastard to eternity.
Probably the best ever blues song. It cuts into my soul every time I listen to it. Stunning lyrics, which I am sure could only be written by someone who had experienced heartache, but it's not just the lyrics, it's the way that Tom Waits delivers them; such feeling.
"...with this blind broken heart that sleeps beneath my lapel.."
his best album by far pre swordfishtrombones, stands by itself as a great album,he could never top this hence the style change, heart attack & vine very much a transitional record
This is the sound of a broken heart. It is the sound of a man who has betrayed the woman he loves, and is left destroyed in the wake of his own ill-deeds. It is guilt and regret and remorse for all the things that could of been but never will be. Music with a soul as battered and scarred as any that ever lived in the heart of any man. Absolutely breathtaking.
She sends me blue valentines all the way from philadelphia to mark the anniversary of someone that I used to be and it feels just like there's a warrant out for my arrest got me checkin' in my rearview mirrror and I'm always on the run thats why I change my name and I didn't think you'd ever find me here
to send me blue valentines like half forgotten dreams like a pebble in my shoe as I walk these streets and the ghost of your memory is the thistle in the kiss and the burgler that that can break a roses neck it's the tattooed broken promise that I hide beneath my sleeve and I see you every time I turn my back
she sends me blue valentines though I try to remain at large they're insisting that our love must have a culogy why do I save all of this madness in the nightstand drawer there to haunt upon my shoulders baby I know I'd be luckier to walk around everywhere I go with a blind and broken heart that sleeps beneath my lapel
she sends me blue valentines to remind me of my cardinal sin I can never wash the guilt or get these bloodstains off my hands and it takes a lot of whiskey to make these nightmares go away and I cut my bleedin' heart out every nite and I die a little more on each st. valentine day remember that I promised I would write you... these blue valentines blue valentines blue valentines
