This actually represents Dexter's sociopathy, this is how he believes everyone should thank him. He thinks he should be seen as a hero by everyone if they knew what he has done. The fact is he is a serial killer and doesn't matter if he killed terrible people, noone would ever respond to that evidence in such a way. This parade I think is how he rationalizes what he does.

1) If Dexter and the whole "story" were real, I would totally go into streets and join such a parade in his honor. Of course I would have to know he only kills other killers, which is in RL impossible, but there is that word "IF".

2) He is more likely a psychopath, unlike a sociopath he can emulate and fake emotions and he is not unable to communicate with people in a normal way. Thats pretty much the only difference of those two.

@RadeonX0X When the show was originally created, it was unlikely that it would go past 1 season, so even though this is a season finale they figured it could be used as a series finale if the show did not end up being renewed.

First time I watched this I got the impression they actually thanked him like this for saving Deb. Not because they cared about Deb but because Dexter was a hero for saving Deb.

More important though, I thought he directed their gratitude to his night time work on killers. That was my impression and I like it more than an imaginary parade :-/

I remember planes flying around with "WE ♥ DEXTER" banners on them at ComiCon a few years ago. <3 they also gave out tons of "I ♥ DEXTER" buttons and stickers. Was awesome.

Now I regret skipping the latter half of season 1. I watched all the rest of Dexter (except the end of s3), and read the endings of s1 & s3.. but never got around to watching it. I'm a bad fan. D:
