  • After parkerizing and putting in water I saw that you used a WD-40 solution? I used a conventional 5w-30 oil and it was not that great I was wondering what your solution was made from, thanks..

  • o wow, that looks really well

  • You sound just like Kenny Fucking Powers!

  • How long can the solution be preserved after the first use and What can it be stored in?

  • Nice job! Have you ever thought about parking the barrel?

  • I am thinking of parkerizing my old westernfield 550ABD bolts, i ordered the other parts from mossberg to upgrade it and make it similar to their tactical 500A models. This will be my first project doing this so can i dip ALL the parts from the dissasimbled bolt? By this i mean the retaining pins, ejectors and all. Will this mess it up when i go to reassemble?

  • Great video, thanks for posting this!

  • Hi Irakveteran888, i got a question for you. How you parkerized your *Sporterized Mosin-Nagant* barrel without parkerizing the inside ( chamber ,bore and riffling ) ???

And when you sandblast a barrel, do you plug the holes with wood pins ???

  • Very nice work indeed. If you wanted to do the frame as well is there any way to preserve those markings?

  • DUDE THAT WAS SO COOL! Ive never seen that done b4 it turned out awesome! If you just blasted with aluminum oxide and left it is that how you get a matte stainless gun or do you have to put some kind of finish on top?

  • nice

  • What do you think the best way to parkerize (For future Duracoating) a long rifle barrel? I'm thinking of getting a Savage Model 10 Law Enforcement and duracoating it for use as a long range tactical rifle for the field, and was wondering how would be best to park it. Thanks for making your videos, they have brought me many hours of entertainment.

  • pop! Woof! lol

  • Hey, can you re-use the parkerizing solution after you are done, or do you have to throw it out and get new stuff? Thanks man, great video.

  • Afte you finish if you coat it down with jj-1065 Ponoil it will stand up to salt water.

My uncle who is a boat mecanis turn my on to it ponoil.com

  • looks good brotha

  • are you sure it's a good idea to blast the underside of the slide and the rails?

  • okay i remember a video where you used denatured alcohol for something do you remember what video that was?

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Love the rig.

  • You are wearing a firefighter shirt carry a gun on the job. Am I missing something here?

  • that is super nice so what type of chemical bath was that again

  • Thanks for sharing the process with us. Very interesting and educational. Looks like it came out great. Hope it continues to be durable for you. Jet

  • Whats the wd40 bath consist of?

  • @Demicron Wd40

  • Hello,

just wanted to know whats the stuff in the water that makes it turn black? I`m working to repark a 1903 receiver. Let me know what it is and where i can buy it. I already sandblastetd the receiver and cleaned it good.

    Let me know

  • Gorgeous.

  • Earned my sub with this one. Great stuff.

  • thanks for these videos. i had to search your uploads to find it. you helped me out tremendously, and i thank you very much. i just parkd' my norinco 1911 and it looks great.

  • Nice gun. But when your wife makes spaghetti do you taste parkerizing solution? Lol. Ya you did a great job. Like the shooting too.

  • i just picked up a springfield gi to have fun with. and i wanna go from park to a polished blue. 600 grit probably. just a project since there arent many polished blued 1911 being enjoyed.

  • Hot bluing is going to be a really expensive venture to under take in your garage...Take it to a professional refinisher. Parkerizing is easy to do at home, but hot bluing requires a lot more specialized equipment. You can always try Brownell's Oxphro Blue though...It does a nice job.

  • i have access to the equipment. i want to take care of the metal work. i was thinking of bead blasting it. with the aluminum oxide and polishing the flats. do you think thats the best way of doing it?

  • @momo671

With hot bluing, you are going to want a highly polished surface. You'll need access to varying amounts of abrasive and polishing type wheels and a lot of patience. The reason hot bluing costs so much is because the chemicals are dangerous and a good gunsmith will spend 3-4 hours just prepping the metal.

You could blast off surface rust with the AO, fill in the pits, then polishing it up to a mirror shine and that would work.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 hot blueing is the easyiest thing ever all you need is to disessemble degreese boils some water and keep it hot and use the two stage liquid kit rub it on put it hot water and repeat untill color is achieved

  • what is a good method of removing a parkerized finish while knocking off the least amount of metal? is there such thing as a parkerize removing solution?

  • It depends on what your desired results are. Are you wanting to blue or repark?

  • how would a parkerized job look on a polished steel part. i know when bluing it makes a difference but what about park? just curious thanks

  • In order for the parkerizing process to be successful, you have to agitate the surface of the metal in a sand blasting chamber. A highly polished surface will not work at all. In terms of stainless steel parkerizing, I don't see why it would not as long as you rough of the surface of the metal well. With that being said, I would experiment on something other than a gun to test the theory.

  • thanks for clearing that up. i saw your response on the hot bluing too on yesterday's video. i cant wait!

  • Can I parkerize my dog?

  • But of course!

  • man, i wanna parkerize my car !!! i wanna parkerize my house !!!

  • Dude, I'm telling you. When you get set up to Parkerize, you will find an excuse to park anything!

  • nice very informative thx dude

  • Nice video and nice work on the finish. I didn't see it in the comments so I will ask. What manufacturers solution are you using. Looks great. Thanks- TMFA

  • I am using Lauer Custom Weaponry's Maganese Phosphate.

    Thanks for watching.

  • Thanks, I just ordered a batch to parkerize some AR parts that I manufacture.

  • @TheManFromAlaska

What are the parts made of? Bear in mind parkerizing is only used for steel. Stainless does okay but not optimal results. Aluminum will contaminate the mixture just so you know.

  • @8888

I make parts in my shop such as flash hiders and other non FFL gun parts. 4140, 4130, O-1, and various other metals.

BTW: I just got the park solution today.

  • @TheManFromAlaska

    nice...

  • I've got one for you. I got an old 20 ga pump to "redo" for my boy. Someone had painted it, so I used my wire wheel to clean it off. When I cooked it up, it came out this kinda antique color!..........My wire wheel is brass not steel......The brass tranferred to the surface of the steel.

  • You'll need to sandblast it with 220 grit aluminum oxide to the white. You can either parkerize or duracoat from there.

  • You will get a more uniform finish if you suspend your parts from pieces of wire so they dont touch the bottom of your parkerizing tank.

  • I have been doing barreled actions as of lately, and yes, I have been suspending them to great effect. Thanks.

  • Great video! Thank you. I'm curious how you store the parkerizing solution for re-use? Also, how do you handle small parts - pins and springs - do you have a technique for keeping them together in the parkerizing tank?

  • I store it in 1 gallon water jugs that I initially use for distilled water. (You have to use distilled water with parking solutions)

For small parts, you can weld yourself together a basker using stainless steel meshing, or you can find a small one from Harbor Freight and rig yourself up a little "fry basket" for the small parts.

For barreled actions, they are suspended in long tanks with stainless steel wire.

You can buy fairly large lengths of the wire from Michaels.

  • A question for you. I am just about to start sand blasting and parking some guns that I own and my first project will probably be a makarov. I noticed that you did not remove the extractor when doing the slide.. Is it important to do that or does it not matter.

  • I didn't worry about it for my personal firearm, but I would remove it if I were doing it for someone else.

With Parkerizing, you want to remove any kind of springs, screws, or other items that require any type of precise fitting.

With that being said, I didn't worry about removing the extractor, and my Mak is shooting great after about 400 rounds.

    No misfires, etc...

  • Cool thanks, yeah I cant wait to get the blaster and compressor.. should be delivered any day.. then its off to get the parkerizing chemicals.

  • It's fun....For awhile, you will be parkerizing anything you can get your hands on....lol

  • Yeah going through that phase now.. lol I did 10 sten mags yesterday and a little Czechoslovakian .25 cal pistol today.. lol

I have been using a home made solution (Found the recipe on line) while I wait for my order of solution, and its coming out nice and black. Contents of a D cell alkaline battery, some clean and strip phosphoric acid, distilled water and steel wool. Works perfectly.

  • two question...

what was the blasting media you use

ive some other folks who mix the parkerizing solution with water at 1:8 ratio. Is that correct or am I mistaken

  • 220 grit Aluminum Oxide

    1:8 is correct.

Be sure to allow a degreased bricket of steel wool to dissolve completely in your first batch.

This will season the mixture a bit.

Also, make sure you only use distilled water.

  • looks good

  • Thanks.

  • Very nice, might have to purchase some soloution.

  • I love parkerizing. I have been parking everything I can get my hands on. It's the ultimate working man's finish...

  • Where would you get a pan big enough to parkerize a rifle?

  • @Goodspittin

You can but them from Midway for 40 bucks each. They are 40x6x6" I think.

I have 2 of them. They will fit a 91/30 barrel action.

  • How would you keep that?

  • I meant "heat that" haha opps.

  • keep what?

  • I meant heat opps!

  • You use either a good heating element available from Scientific Supply Houses, or if you want to be cheap like me, you use a few good propane camping stoves.

I plan on using a good piece of aluminum as a heat sink to protect the base of the vats from flames.

    Should work nicely.

  • Cool kinda want to do that with a old .22 bolt action I a have but the bolt feels really lose so i'v been a little concerned about test firing it.

  • Eric - Great video on parkerizing!

  • Wood you really did use only the finest quality tools and didn't cut corners!!! LOL

  • I get the job done cheap, but it works...lol

  • ok cool. well just mesg it to me when its done :D ahah sorry for spamming your comments haha

  • I will and no problem. A question is a question

  • ohh sweet. update me when you get it. how much will you charge? well if u have any pricing in mind right now haha

  • I am in the process of having a website built. I will have prices and pictures of previous jobs listed.

  • what do u mean? i dont live any where near you =/ i live in Houston, Texas :(

  • When I get my FFL, you can send your stuff to me to get worked on...

  • i wish i can send u my guns =/

  • Come Jan of 2010, you may get your wish.

  • I 'm your neighbor evidently.I live in henry co. and fish Tussahaw too.I have a llama 380 micromax that I would like to parkerize, would you be interested in assisting in the venture?I would like to get some good 380 loads made up as well. You obviously know alot about guns and ammo.Nice vids and good work.

  • PM sent

  • "engineered with the utmost quality and professionalism" "very technical stuff here" (adjusts duct tape) LOL. i love it

  • Yeah im a nerd.

Its a mundane subject, so I have to throw at little humor in there...lol

  • i got hold of a colt 1911 with the parkerised finish, but i'd like to maybe bring the metal back out and remove the parkerised finish. Is that safe? how would i go about removing it, to maybe do a blueing job for instance.

  • If you are sandblasting what you will need to do is choose a medium that will polish rather than agitate the surface of the metal.

If you are not sandblasting, just use a buffer wheel while varing the thickness of wire wheel you are using until you begin to polish it to a brilliant luster. Follow up with a cloth buffing wheel to make it shine very bright. The brighter the metal, the more brilliant the finish will look.

Degrease and move onto to hot or cold bluing.

  • thanks i was worried it might damage the fine markings like the colt horse logo that's on there very fine. i might consider sending this one to a pro to get worked on because its old us property that i want to keep as pristine as possible.

thanks again for the great videos and reply

  • If you lived in Georgia, I'd say bring it by, but right now, I don't have a gunsmithing FFL just yet (in the process) so I cannot have it transferred, otherwise, I'd say send it to me.

There should be plenty of options online in terms of gunsmiths and such. For a master grade polishing and hot bluing, you'll probably pay around $190-225

  • Excellent results are you going to have a vid on the frame parerizing?

Also, when you were doing the bench rest firing, what range pouch was that with the ACU camo on it?

  • No...I went ahead and parked the frame on my own time. The assembled product looks wonderful, and so far, after 3 days of carrying in crappy weather with no oiling or wiping down....no rust....love it!

The pistol case is available from Fox Outdoor Products. The Tactical Line.

They run about 156 bucks or less each

  • im sorry...the cases are like 12-15 bucks

  • haha. for a while there, I was thinking wow, I thought I was into shooting. lol.

  • Lol...yeah....I know, right?

  • im lost what is Parkerizing is it a bluein that is super fast ? or what is it like duracoat is a spray an bluein itsnt anything like this so what is better Parkerizing or duracoat ?

  • Straight from wiki:

Parkerizing (also called phosphating and phosphatizing) is a method of protecting a steel surface from corrosion and increasing its resistance to wear through the application of an electrochemical phosphate conversion coating.

  • whats the cal of the gun i have my rem 870 12 ga at a dealer / gun smith getting the action done its been almost a month they said it take abt 3 to 4 week till i can put the gun together

  • Wow, excellent video! I have two questions...

What kind of gloves do you use?

Wouldn't a CLP bath work better than a WD-40 bath?

BTW, looks sexy as hell! I really like the Makarovs, I've always got great accuracy out of those little pistols.

  • The gloves are just powderless non latex gloves. I think they are made on thin rubber. I will find the make and all and get back with you.

CLP would work okay I'm sure, but I would just buy a gallon of WD-40 and be done with. I choose WD-40 because of it's water displacing properties.

Different oils will yield somewhat different results. You can use melted cosmoline if you are going for that olive green sort of color, but the results can vary...Sometimes the parts must sit a long time.

  • Im a huge fan of the 1911 also, a 4" or 3" model is a great CC weapon but I love my Glock 23, 13 rounds of authority. That 180winchester HP will ruin anyones day, I dont care how much crack they are on. A .380 will just piss them off. I can carry twice the rounds of the 1911 in half the weight. I do love your videos by the way, keep up the good work. Glock all the way

  • Dro coat seemed pretty reasonble till I seen how they hammer you on the shipping and handleing When you by the two gun kit the S&H is almost as much as the product

  • We bought in bulk. I'll have to ask my bud how much he paid for shipping. He ordered about 160 bucks worth of product.

  • Shipping was only $15.00

  • Nice vid, but you could send that Mak. my way if you like! hahaha

  • I will be happy to refinish your Mak for you...

  • I do believe in stoping power, Say someone wearing a bullet proof vest is shot with a 9mm vs. a 10mm or .45 ACP. There is a such thing as impact wounds. A 9mm would make them take a step back while a 10 or .45 would more than likely take the average man down to the ground. But I totally agree with you that a well placed hit with a 9 is better than a miss with a .45.

  • Ehhh....The arguments end up being purely scientific. There has been years of study about what the human body actually does when hit with a bullet.

Sure, a 10mm Auto or a .45 ACP may hit with quite a bit of authority, but ultimately, it is still going to come down to hit location.

I would rather put 3-4 Makarov rounds into a vital area than sling some heavier bullets and hit nothing.

The Makarov is mainly an everyday carry gun. I prefer the 1911 with all that being said.

  • nice job my friend.... respect to rusian guns

  • Hmm... my CCW makarov (a Bulgarian Makarov with a 19# spring and Pearce grips) could use a refinish. Love the vid brother!

  • Wow, that turned out great! What do you use for your parkerizing solution?

  • I'm using the Lauer Custom Waeponry Magnese Phosphate.

  • "Utmost quality and professionalism" now THAT is funny!

  • very nice result Eric.

No more text on the slide, correct?

But anyway, it's a user not for display.

    grtz, Robin

  • You can barely see the text but not really. You would only see if you knew it was there before.

  • Comment removed

  • hell yea, them Russian guns are great! yea btw, i dont have this set-up, but just 1 gallon of muridac acid quickely does the same job, no questions asked! but i get a lot of info. from your vids.! thanks!

  • Hmmm....interesting.

I may end up shooting a homebrew video on the subject eventually.

  • A neat little trick you can do is, apply a thin layer of petroleum base grease (I prefer G.I. rifle grease the stuff in the little garand but stock pots) it reacts with the parkerizing solution and gives a neat greenish hue to the finish.

Doesn't happen 100% of the time but when it works it gives the finish a cool effect.

    Great Video!

  • Nice

  • what do u do for you job that u want a makarov?

  • I just do Security. It's light and handy.

People don't understand that there is really no such thing as "stopping power"

It has to do with shot placement. If I shot someone with a 10mm Glock 7 times but didn't hit any vital organs, it still would not kill them.

I could shot someone in the head or heart with my Makarov and they would drop with one shot....trust me.

  • Duct tape is high tech stuff man.

  • It really looks great man!!!! Good to see that having all the right tools helps to do the job right!!!!

  • I heard that...Thats for the support.

Your rifles are going to look killer. Especially with Chad's stock work.

  • Oh nice work!!! Now I want to go get a dinged up 1911 and fix her up! Thanks Bud! First it was the K31s now I want a 1911...

  • Nice vid man!

  • You actually trust your life to that Makarov? I heard you say you carry it "on the job" but I have to ask, why not something like a glock or XD?

  • I've had Makarov as my service pistol. And it didn't jam even once. The round maybe much less powerful than 9 Para, but IMHO for self-defence it's even better. I don't know how about you, but I'd rather injure an attacker than kill him. Less troubles with the police and no need to question yourself was that kill really necessary :-)

  • Coming from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, if someone attacks me, I want them dead, and legally, I can do that here.

    J.

  • Do you mean when somebody attacks you on your property or just on a street (provided that you possess a permit to carry a handgun)?

In any case I suppose you're gonna need some proof or witnesses to back your story up. And if you didn't kill some bum with a criminal record, but a normal guy that happened to be in a bad mood in a wrong place at the wrong time - the outcome might not be that obvious. Right?

Besides, have you ever killed a man? Was it fun? Ever questioned your decision? ;-)

  • shut up

  • you guys have no sense of humor, do you?

  • We do...Just stick to the facts please.

  • I like it because it is light and handy. Shot placement is key with any handgun, no matter what the caliber.

  • LOL :D thats some space aged duct tape

  • Thats right...Had to drive to the NASA place to get it...

  • ahaha better keep that under wraps :P, great vid 5/5

  • I Love this channel...So much info!!

  • Thanks man...Hopefully it will get better and better,
