You actually can play with the keyboard too, but it's harder and has some bugs like missing key bindings. E.g. you can't exit from the picture book.

On the other hand, there are also some keyboard shortcuts that you may not have on the controller (I guess). Like the "X" and "C" keys to in- and decrease the speed of the game. Also, pressing the "cheat"-key "P" makes all objects visible at once, if you don't want to unlock them one by one.
