@Flash635 Yes. If you're supplementing existing memory (As in, there's only one module installed and you're installing a second), you should get a module that matches the existing one. If not, additional speed can't hurt you. I don't know how fast the Vostro 1500 is capable of running memory, but the price difference between various speeds of RAM is fairly small, so I'd go for the fastest you can afford.
@rdbahm Thanks, that helps a lot. The reason I asked is that I've seen different DDR2 RAM offered for Asus laptops than for my Vostro and at different prices for the same brands and G at the same supplier.
4G is the most the Vostro 1500 can take.
I hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread(?) I think others can benefit from what we're discussing.
@MrDjuergens I'm not specifically familiar with the T23, so I'm not certain if the video card is onboard or dedicated. Most laptops have graphics cards built into the motherboard, which means replacing them is a matter of replacing the entire motherboard - often costing around $200 for the replacement. I'd look around for service manuals for your particular model and see what you can find.
@rdbahm Miraculously the T23 started working again, giving me an opportunity to download all my stuffs...afraid to shut if off , but such is life...again, thanks for taking your time to reply and keep the excellent A++ videos coming. Cheers. Doug
Man, oh man...you were spot on...albeit the initial screen asking all those computer wise questions was somewhat daunting...do you reckon that it's a permanent fix, or should I seek a service center? BTW I live in the frikkin middle of the South Pacific...you da man. Best. Doug
Hi: Great video. Have 1500 and it without notice stopped booting. I reinstalled the RAM following your very clear instructions and still will not boot. Any suggestions? Thanks. Doug
@MrDjuergens My suggestion would to be to reset the BIOS. Unplug power and the main battery, then take off that bottom RAM panel. Also in that compartment is the BIOS backup battery. Unplug that (carefully, the connector is somewhat fragile) and let the computer sit for several minutes. Plug everything back in and see if things are working.
@rdbahm On another subject, I have a T23 that works fine, except that sometimes the monitor does not illuminate. I replaced long video part that is located just below the monitor. I did not work at first, but low and behold it came on today at the office. Then I powered down and when I got it home, no monitor. Everything else seems functional...Help please. Best. Doug
@MrDjuergens Sounds like you replaced the inverter, which would have been my first inclination. Your statement makes me think that when it does not illuminate, stuff is still shown on the screen, albeit without backlighting. Failing that, it could be a video card problem.
@702lakersfan Reinstalling Windows is your best bet for removing a tricky virus. If you're running the OS Dell installed, I believe there is a reinstall partition you can use to reinstall your operating system.
Great Job! One small oversight but very important is that after you remove the battery, press and hold the power button down for about 3 secs. This allows the capacitors to discharge. If you don't when remove the memory it could arc, completely shorting out the memory and you won't know it until you reinstall/re-seat the memory, power on the laptop and no ram is located. Off to the computer store you go!
Thanks for that. I can't use DDR3 in a VOSTRO 1500 then?

@Flash635 No, unfortunately. DDR2 only.

@rdbahm Thanks.
I use any DDR2 if it's 200 pin?

what is the maximum Ram spec should I buy for my Dell vostro 1500?

Thanks for the video.
I wanted to upgrade my Vostro 1500, too. However, I found there are 2 different RAM on the market.
DDR2 PC2-5300, NON-ECC
DDR2 PC2-6400, NON-ECC
They are both 2GB. Which one should I get? Or are they actually the same? Thanks.
lowbvan 3 months ago
@lowbvan The last number is the speed. Get the 6400. Faster is usually safer, as computers can always clock it down to make it work.

I do appreciate your time...I have a spare T23 that maybe the MB is fried...is replacing the video card a big challenge?
