That's some kind of a mind jump thing right there, hearing the click as a subdivision confuses me a lot, he's even sounding off the quarter notes all by himself while playing, I learned something, thanks a lot.
oh and I 'got it,' and really liked hearing you groove to the metronome like that. Very good point about the beating and falling in and out of the pocket.... very interesting. Very innovative and so simple! So relieving that innovation can come from simplicity...
Dave, I have some drum 'findings' you might think are interesting (from computer study) regarding soloing concepts in the back of a performer's head. Let me know if you're interested.
I don't quite understand the metronome setting and what you are playing. The met. is playing in 7/8 but what you are playing is not and doesn't have anything to do with what you are playing. I like what you are playing though.
it's not in 7/8, i don't think that metro can even do 7/8, but he's in 4/4. He's subdividing straight 16notes in his head and the metro beat is on the 4th 16th note of each beat. So like if you had a bar of 4/4 with all 16th notes, the metro is clicking on the 4th, 8th,12th, and 16th 16th note. If it's too confusing, just stick to what feels good to you, that's what it's all about.
The metronome is definitely clicking in 7. Listen to the louder beep and then 6 softer beeps which equal 7. He is just not listening to the accented beep that should tell him he is in 7 bpm. I sell these mets at our music store! It displays the 7/8, 6/8, 5/8, etc. He plays well though, I have to give it to him!LOL
And why would you think that? of course metronomes can do 7/8.. Tho here it's 7/4. Yeah, I don't know either why he put it like that, but that's not the point here. Listen carefully at 0:35-1:01, he tells you what the point is.
@erikeepper : I just so happen to have the metronome set for a 7/4 click with the louder click being the accent, but in this case i ignored the accent a acted as if the all of the click sounds were quarter note clicks. Got it?
counting the click of the metronome as the 'ah' is such a great idea. leaves far less room for error as the swing is the indicator of where you are... i think! gonna try that right away... thanks.
Haha, you're also a drummer is good. I just know you as very very very great drummer. I saw you at zap/stuttgart. Wow!!! You're great in both drums and drummachine!
Yeah, i wanna see more insights from you, with maybe more explanation, please!!!
Oh wow, this guy is good. I "got it".
The time signature is in 7/4 time. So you count like you do in 4/4 time, only there are 7 beats. In addition to that he starts on the "ah" of beat 1.
Listen to 3:38 - 3:42 if you do not understand what he is doing.
He accents on 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Very interesting and innovative take on rhythm. I have to try this.

wouldnt it be 7/8 because you'd count the 8th notes..... lol, why is it 7/4 buddy?
Seanicusladz 2 years ago
Just listen to the click? the higher pitched sound repeats in 7/4. That's why it's 7/4. But that's not the point. Why would the click not be in 7/4?
