Obviously, the writers of this show intended many (if not most) of the jokes for an adult audience. The basic concept is kid-oriented (and has a great message) but the entertainment value rests heavily on the writing. And I'd say 99% of the humor goes over kid's heads. I worked in Disney World for two years, and I can't tell you how many Dad-aged men I had asking for Perry the Platypus tee shirts :)
