  • This song is so disturbing to me. I did grow up in the 90's, being born in '81, but.. the older I get, the more unsettling the song becomes.

  • This song is about a stalkler!

  • i remember 95 listening to this in the crew truck in the morning on the way to the oil rig on one day. just about shed a tear

  • love this song.. brings back memories.. this is what I call "an angry rock song." Sarah needed to do this with Alanis Morrisette.. think it would have sounded immaculate with them..together..

  • excellent

  • this time her words are so heavy... what a sweet revenge...this is just... yeah this is the definition of alternative rock music... this is the crown of it... no less ;-p

  • Is it possesion ? ...or ... damnation !?

  • @BohemianConspiracy Go somewere else with that shit

  • @Joeyal123 "Amen to you ...Crown of the Ayatollahs"

  • Be imaginative. You have to imagine yourself the lonely one, wanting love so bad, you'll pretend she or he is there....and it's only for a moment...in the night before the day. It's about longing for love; the night is the companion. "It" could be anyone you dream of. That's what this is about. A love thirsty person longing for REAL touch.

  • No this song is not about sexual assault. I don't care personally what the song really is about. I like to take the lyrics and make them my own. I think of the song as someone possessed by a succubus for love. A spirit in the night for a lonely person; just a thought. *smiles*

  • I wish Sarah McLachlan would take my breath away

  • @DoubleR2591 yeah, i'd like to be choked by her too...

  • @NonSilentKiller Haha, who wouldn't?

  • Psicofantasia was kind of my braind that did not go there!

    Sarah McLachlan.1996

  • one of the greatest songs ever.

  • What disappoints me, is, below this song that's composed of layers of musical and poetic talent is a banner ad that says "The premiere of Nicki Minaj's 'Stupid Hoe' clocked 4.8 million views, the highest single-video Vevo number in 24 hours EVER!"

  • I think she is just as beautiful as her voice. Don't know what to think though, breaks my heart. I'm told by a source she's not into guys. Heard the lyrics of this favorited song are from a stalker she had thrown in jail who tryd to sue her for restitutions.?. and lost. Lyrics pierce the heart with this heart melting voice. For sure, feel alot of empathy with the lyrics although some the shit she's talkin about is some wierd shit. If you were male & not cute female, your ass may to jail. CRAZY!

  • Nice song

  • Always loved this song. This song holds some bittersweet memories, but it still sounds great up loud.

  • i miss the 90s.

  • @marbinx Never thought I'd see that. And to think the 80's were even better.

  • just perfect. chil song. 90's...great

  • Haunting, is it not?

  • loved this song ever since it was used in the tv show due south

  • WTF IS THIS. EVANS BLUE IS SO MUCH BETTER

  • @vjehshta Just be glad then, that you have Evans Blue to listen to. Enjoy it. I'll stick to the original.

  • @jtmichaelson amen X3

  • I totally had a thing for her in the 90's and this video helped out alot!!

  • I first heard this when Evans Blue did it, never knew it was a cover. I think I'm in love.

  • Ha ok I have heard her b4, she did Silence by Delerium, never knew.

  • Fk me I've never ever heard this broad before, how the hell? she's pretty damn good.

  • I can relate to this song in many ways, as someone who is deeply in love. However, this song is so 90s. I can hear Oasis coming on the radio after this. Great song but I HATE great songs that become so dated by mainstream style.

  • Love Sarah M ,All her video"s are very strong

  • This reminds me of the dude that broke my neck..literally, I use to sing it to him before he turned into a FREAK!..another mistake..oh well..sa` la ve sha

  • So beautiful

  • Listen as the wind blows

    From across the great divide

    Voices trapped in yearning

    Memories trapped in time

    The night is my companion

    And solitude my guide

    Would I spend forever here

    And not be satisfied?

I am this, this song touched me very deeply! The night is my great companion; my peaceful, dark, magical lover. It never betrays me, therefore, it satisfies my soul, therefore, I can remain solitary for many years if I want to. Sarah McLachlan has a phenomenal voice

  • she and her beauty are HYPNOTIC .. as well . so well she sings to me and you.

  • this song is very dramatic... nowadays the word used to desribe it ( by me) is

Cathartic.... in the dramatic emotional use. of the word.

An extreme change of mood. normally at the end of something (act or play or song)

She has a way of changing the emotional mood of music. She .... is a MASTER.

    a MASTER of her CRAFT.

here I mUST mention the beauty of her "Loon Call" ... her change in pitch to prescribed pitches.

no one else makes it sound like she does... again... MASTER of her CRAFT.

    love

  • @intraining01 Ah, you mean her falsetto? Hehe. She has a definate mastery of that!

  • I used to love this version and HATE the Canadian version, but once I read what the song was really about, I liked the Canadian version better... But this is still good. I like all the tricks in photography used here.

  • One of those perfect tracks. I love how she doesn't rely on traditional pop hooks. It's mysterious and subtle and raunchy all at once.

  • @GrahamNificent Exactly, I read somewhere, that Sarah loves the ugly, tones as well as the beautiful ones; and together they were magic, well, for sure!

Made me listen even broader, now listen to her tracks again, you will "hear" her philosophy, brilliant.

  • Ms. McLachlan, you are absolute magic and enchantment, thank you for sharing your gifts with us. What an incredible song.

  • amazing song! very full circle in all the elements needed for a great piece

  • One more of those songs sung by an artist that is engraved on-in the gray matter between my ears. Thanks for the video.

  • Minnesota:)

  • they have an Evans Blue version of this song. I love that band.

  • hauntingly beautiful

  • anyone know if the version thats on the end of this cd is on you tube.i cant find it.you let the disc play until you get the piano version wiith just sarah and the piano.its one of those hidden tracks.i love that version.peace and thankyou

  • i think she is so sexy,what a morsel,,,peace

  • So much passion...

  • WOW. Thumbs up if you are now going to start living right, so you can come back in the next life as Sarah Mclachlan's microphone.

  • Hey Deanna McDaniel...remember this one...that night, why did all that go the way it did?

  • Really good song, what a great sound. If she had changed her voice a bit when the heavier base worked into the song I think it would have made more impact than just staying so dreamy. But still a really good song.

  • I love Sarah Mclachlan. She and Kate Bush are my two favorite female artists. It would be magical if they did a song together.

  • @pretending2Bhuman Wow, I thought about how much of Sarah's work sort of had that same sublime mastery. I Think Kate really seems to emphasize the sensory and emotive more while Sarah is similar but in some regards more emotional-spiritual. I myself am a certifiable Kate Bush fanatic. I think she is the most gifted artist of our time. Buy Aerial and The Hounds of Love albums and listen to all the songs........ amazing.

  • Hey let me pour out my heart to you and you don't give a pooooo... sing it!.. I still love it!

  • This is the music I was listening to when I captured Mrs Rambo's purse snatcher!

  • amazing song. i love it.

  • I love commercials. Can't wait until we get to see 2 or more.

  • well I heard this was about a letter she got from a stalker who later sued her for plagiarism lol I like the Evans Blue version

  • Sarah McLachlan have always said that most listeners have always have their own interpretation of her songs that are completely different from her emotional point of view in her lyrics and I guess, based on the lyrics, that some people interpret the song of it being about stalking and some interpret the song of it being about rape. Sarah's Songs, although quite personal to her, seems very enigmatic to me because it's very cryptic. Her lyrics are somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Michael Stipe.

  • @Mr1991ladarius

And others, like me, interpret is a passion for a love you can't have. Longing.

The longing is a normal emotion, however stalking is not a normal behavior.

  • This is a great vampire song. I always think about Lestat and his buddies when I hear this.

  • this was her best album.

  • this song is NOT about sexual assault!!! it is based on letters that were written to sarah mclaughlin by a stalker. when it was about to be released he got a lawyer to sue her and get some of the royalties because she literally used some of his words from the letters in the song but it never got a chance to get settled because he committed suicide before the lawsuit came up!!!!

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity FINALLY someone gets the story correct...

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity that is true.but i have been a fan before this album.peace

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity Actually, there's some speculation that he sued her just to see her in court so he could be in the same room with her. Such is the mind of a stalker. :(

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity Dude, that's awesome

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity It's a shame he gets labled as a stalker, it has a twist, beautiful words he created, he wasn't meant for this world. Some people just arn't understood.

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity Hmmm....If he was a stalker...he was a very romantic one.....

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity That's straight up true. She even talked about it in a tv interview once

  • @Mrstrangfamiliarity but that's exactly why it is about sexual assault. The stalker's letters were about just that..

  • wtf? omg the canadian version of this video is so much better. and im american!!!

  • I remember when my friend asked me to listen to this, before it was released, to see if I liked it. I could not stop listening to it. I bought it as soon as I could. It's still a great song, and yes I read a long time ago she said it was about a stalker and some of the things he wrote to her (kinda creepy). Still a haunting and beautiful song. I LOVE the whole CD. That is so rare! Now a days no one buys the CD, they just get the song they like. I'm telling you, the whole CD is awesome!

  • Sarah ♥!!

  • this was the original this should be the showboat for this song not that aereal dancing left wing bullshit

  • guys, the song is about sexual assault. I'm not even kidding

  • @VIDvider it is about her stalker that sent her letters and she incorpate them into this song.

  • @VIDvider I thought it was about the girl taking control to get what she wants. Like "I'll throw you down on the bed, and have my way with you" Not being afraid, as a woman, to take control and throw the guy around a bit, and get what you want. I think this is a powerful song about not conforming to societal beliefs that the woman is a slut if she's aggressive in a relationship, and in the bedroom. I guess I could be wrong though...

  • Guys, Guys, Guys.............. The song is about Rape. I seriously hope that i'm not the only one who knows this

  • your words keep me alive¡¡¡

  • One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

  • this is buy far one of the most talented people i have ever had the privlige of seeing

  • there are 5 advertisements on this page and they are playing just fine, but my video isnt, i dont even know whats goin on right now

  • a voice and beauty that make mere mortals weep.

  • She is SO beautiful! and her voice is amazing!

  • i want music like this to MAKE A BIG COME BACK i miss music i could relate to not all this shit today, what happened to Our generation im and im wondering y did we trade in such music with passion, meaning, emotion, for meaningless bull that we forget about after 3 months???

  • @Angelito011able I totally agree. If I thought music was going to be this bad today I would have shot myself by the time the year 2000 rolled around. However, at least we will always have these great musicians such as Sarah McLahclan to listen to.:)

  • I want more music like this. And I want more people who understand music like this. So otherworldly and enchanting.

  • There is just no denying how great this song is. Lyrically, instrumentally, it's all there. The organ opening is just....there's no way to describe the emotions felt. The bass(which is so underrated in terms of how cool it is), the drums, guitar...this is a perfect song. This is one of those songs that I wish I could hear for the first time again.

  • @dhays17 you're so right

  • @dhays17 You hit the nail right on the head!! It is such an incredible song, I always turn it up when it comes on my Pandora, then usually have to hear it again here on youtube

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Which is the real PsychoticLoner ?

"get your freeloading ass off of Youtube! " - May 2011

"First, I never claimed to dislike freeloaders." - Aug 2011

  • @VvAnarchangelvV

Thank you; you just shot your argument in the foot. Now everyone can see I never said I disliked freeloaders.

Is that why you were too afraid to respond to me directly, because you realized you had no argument?

  • I'ts been so long since I heard this song for the first time in "Due South" TV series and it has had a great influence in my life. It is so beautiful!

  • @KKarovBG The "Due South" scene this was in was unbelievably beautiful.

  • ...that Hammond intro always gives me the chills...

  • I was told that the writer of this song was a stalker that harrassed her and was arrested eventually. As a letter from a psycho, scary but she turns it into a beautifully dark love song. love it.

  • This is the best version!! There was no need for the remakes!! Sarah's voice is amazing!!

  • she is the best

  • Had no idea Evans Blue stole this song lol.

  • this is one of My favorite songs by Sarah, but I have one question. Is She portraying as a male stalker stalking a female in the Song because, even though it's based on her experiences of being stalked, but I just felt like, by listening to the song over and over again, that if she portrays a female stalker in this song by stalking a man, then the guy must be a real wimp if he cries as Sarah wipes away his tears.

  • @Mr1991ladarius - She said in the VH1 Behind The Music special: She formulated the lyrics based on the letters from a few "stalkers". She sings their thoughts toward her (hence she is singing what they would like to do to her). The recipient of these unwanted affections is always a woman (ie: sarah)

  • Oh mY goodness. Possession is one of my all time favorite songs. Sarah Mclachlan is truly an inspiration and I her work is like other. i WISH i WOULD HEAR MORE FROM HER. i KNOW SHE'S DEALING WITH FAMILY. If she never makes another record, I'm in love with the ones that are out today!... True fan!

  • Vevo is awful what lame advertisements.

  • Sarah is a gift that comes along once. Enjoy her music as it is timeless!

  • Smile Empty Soul did a great cover of this

  • I fell in love with this woman and her music when I was 17.

  • like "Blood Roses" another awesome song with similar only worse unfortunate inspiration.

  • This is one of the first songs I ever heard by her back in the 90's my mum was a fan and she played the hell out of the album. I love this track most of all but didn't actually realise the background to the lyrics.

  • ok 11 people are just out of their minds... this is a Great song.

  • I thought this song was so sweet and sexy when it first came out. When I found out the inspiration behind it, it became a little creepy.

  • meaning: wanting someone so badly but you know u cant have him or her. huh, really good song.

  • Sarah based this disturbingly beautiful / beautifully disturbing song on letters from an obsessive fan. That begs the question: Did he get a writing credit? Royalties?

  • @DiLL590 He sued her claiming she used words he had written. But before the trial started, while they were trying to figure out her security/safety, he killed himself.

  • Get to know thyself so that YOU WON'T be a willing VICTIM/PREY to take whatever ABUSE or MISTREATMENT any man CHOOSES to inflict ON YOU when you can RELISH being in your OWN COMPANY you'll be the WOMAN that a man will WANT to be around BECAUSE you won't be the WOMAN who can't be without A MAN :)

  • @PotentialGrows ... Can that be rephrased so it applies to everyone?

  • @DocDawning I'm fighting for the underdogs..ok so it applies to everyone.

  • @PotentialGrows Ahh, swell! :)

  • its ACTUALLY about a stalker...she got the lyrics from some of his letters....now THAT is f'in creepy!! LOVE THIS SONG!!! Have since it became a "buzz clip" on MTV in 94....Sarah's amazing...

  • This song is about rape. It's crazy when you think about it.

  • this is one of favorite songs ever. she is beautiful. voice and looks.

  • THUMBS UP IF U HATE VEVO !!!!!!!!!!!! WHO REMEMBERS THE OLD YOUTUBE? BEFORE COPYRIGHTS AND CENSORS!!!! I HATE COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!!!! DOWN WITH VEVO!!!!

  • @keodakilla

Oh good grief... Its not that bad. Sure commercials are annoying but its this or music being taken from youtube all together. I can stomach a few moments of commercial crap if it means I can listen to some music.

  • @keodakilla *Sigh* Just shut up right now. The AWESOME Vevo makes Youtube free or else we would have to pay money every month to watch videos.

  • Actually, it's a song from the point of view of a vampire, isn't it?

"Into this night I wander, it's morning that I dread..."

  • @Kletterator

No. Not at all. Its a song from the point of view of a stalker. She wrote this about a man who had stalked her. After she made this song... the results backfired and the guy committed suicide.

  • Amazing song, Very emotionally moving.

  • the beauty of music can simply be from words, not effects

  • one of my all time favorite songs..haunting song.

  • Comment removed

  • @GrahamNificent that is because it is abbot obsession......something that does exactly what you have just explained..... ; )

  • @GrahamNificent Grin...do her words keep you alive...? heh heh

  • @oneidafish They did during fall quarter, that's for sure. xD

She has a way of making me feel better by writing really depressing songs. I'm not sure how that works.

  • God DAMN she should rule every country...Vevo sucks but it's worth it for artists like this.

  • Love the bass line.

  • My ex-girlfriend turned me on to Sarah...thank you Carol!

  • Comment removed

  • I HATE VEVO MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dear Vevo, Let me start by sayin get your corporate asses off youtube! Ever since these big companies started paying off youtube so they could post their friggin videos we can't post ours. We are flagged for infringement evry time we include a song we like in our vldeos.

This is YOUtube, the place where we can post OUR videos. If we wanted to listen to music from you wed go to your damn website.

To people who want greedy corporates gone thumbs up!!!!!

  • @spungoo

Dear Spungoo, let me start off by saying get your freeloading ass off of Youtube! Ever since these big companies started displaying copyrighted material for free, you won't shut up about it. Actual fans are bothered by constant whining by immature asshats.

This is YOUtube, the place where we can post OUR videos, not other people's. If we wanted to listen to spoiled, entitled brats we'd go to their websites.

To people who want greedy hipsters gone, thumbs up!

  • @PsychoticLoner You, sir, are a hypocrite. Freeloading? As an "actual fan", you are watching videos for free. Complaining about whining? Please. Your videos? You have posted exactly zero. Listen? You won't listen to anything that upsets your psychotic fantasy world of corporate elders guiding us benevolently to a better world, stooge. I don't care where you go, or what you do, or what you think. Thumbs down!

  • @VvAnarchangelvV

None of this is hypocrisy. See, in watching the little ad at front, I am paying to see this, thus I'm not freeloading in the first place, nor do I care if people do. I care if they whine about it.

Oh, and "Please" as an argument marks you as a moron.

And yes, I haven't posted any videos. That means absolutely nothing. 90% of Youtube videos are crap, and I'm not adding to that.

Also, how is abiding the law being a "stooge"? It's called being an adult. Grow up already.

  • @PsychoticLoner You are a frickin hypocrite, and unrepentant too. Everything you say is a lie, and I have nothing more to say to you. But for the benefit of those reading, I will show a couple of your lies. You attacked others as freeloaders and now you pretend you didn't. Defending an unjust law makes you a stooge- just ask the judges at Nuremburg. The fact you have not posted any videos shows you were lying when you said you were a contributor to YouTube. The rest is cheap shots-Grow up? No, U

  • @VvAnarchangelvV

First, I never claimed to dislike freeloaders. I dislike people who whine about it when corporations "take" away things they do not own, need, or deserve. Second, not satisfying your material cravings isn't unjust, but stealing from others is. I never claimed to be a contributor, only that those that put up copyrighted material claim to be when they're not.

You're nothing more than some spoiled brat who's parents bowed to whining when they didn't get you a Porsche. Go away

  • @PsychoticLoner "Stealing from others".

You're right, when I download something, the person I download it from no longer has it. So it is stealing.

    Wait...

It's almost as if Intellectual property laws were developed separately, covering separate issues, because they are separate. Personally, I have no interest in effectively deeming Karaoke and mix tapes "immoral".

TLDR: If IP laws were the same as stealing, they wouldn't exist. The laws on stealing would cover it. Stop whining.

  • @PsychoticLoner haha that's first off nice comment I agree with we don't need whiners and I vote two thumbs up

  • Holy cow the bassist is amazing, I've never noticed how much is going on under the melody of this song before. Wow

  • she wrote this song about someone she thought was stalking her ..
