Extending health insurance to children up to age 26 is for the rich. With the current unemployment rate this is a sham. Recent graduates working part time do not qualify. Only if they DO NOT WORK at all. That's because if the employer offers insurance, which is required by law with 50 > employees, grads must pay out of pocket for far inferior coverage. Many rich children take a year off after graduation. Poor children work part-time while looking for FT work. Rich kids get quality health care.

I've been on gov run health care in this country, my case has been riddled with doctors offices misdiagnosing, unnecessary surgery that worsened the symptoms, misbilling causing blocked follow-ups, uninformative medical records, ill advise, prolonged sickness (almost 2 years), red tape, letters of appeal, blocked access to recommended medications, and 3 to 4 month waiting lists. It would be better to take a bullet to the foot then have government run health care, in my opinion.

Three years ago I contracted Menningococcus. I spent two weeks in ICU at 35 years old. With a $65,000.00 medical bill. Doctors refused to treat me because I didn't have coverage or money to pay. Obviously I couldn't work in ICU! Now, since I've had a catostrophic illness that left me with nerve damage in my feet, I can't get health coverage. we do need reform. My own doctor sat for 20 minutes belly aching because he doesn't want healthcare reform!!

If only more people knew about the system here: Mandatory coverage through private insurers who cannot refuse coverage. Massive participation ensures low premiums/ high value. What is the income tax rate there? What percentage of your income goes to taxes? That is where you are paying more than if you had an HMO or PPO plan in the U.S. today. You pay one way or the other. If it is through the govt management of it, then you pay for the extensive waste and corruption and maybe 20 cents on the dollar allocated for healthcare actually go toward your medical expenses.
My net income tax here is really only around 35% of my gross and I get good value for it. My premiums are under 100 EUR / month. If that's waste and corruption, I'm a satisfied customer.
It shouldn't be so hard for the US to design a system that works. There's no shortage of models. Nearly every other industrialized nation has some kind of system. Clearly you don't have a grasp of the economics of risk management. No one forced anyone to raise premiums, it is supply and demand, and the increased risks that are covered, that set prices. By decreasing competition, prices can be raised without much consequence in the market along with the willingness to cover excessive risks. Opening up free markets would lower prices by discouraging these choices by both sellers and buyers. More people would be able to afford it, and better manage risk.

Second, the population of European Union is at least double that of the US. (Though the Netherlands is tiny in comparison, the economics of large-scale participation should be the same.)

But, I'm self-employed, and each time I try to find coverage for myself it is a nightmare. Nobody will give me straight answers about coverage, and to get anything near what my friends with employers get, I would have to pay as much as I pay for rent each month... I can't afford that right now while I'm starting my business and paying student loans out the ass.

I was self-employed for many years in the US, and finally when I felt a little flush I bought a health insurance plan. What I call "if I get hit by a bus insurance" meaning: High deductable ($2500), but low premiums (around $100/month). I was young, and never had any health issues I never saw a doctor while I was insured. But at least it was the bare minimum. Now I live in Holland manditory private insurance, check it out and pay about the same for amazing coverage.

Extending health insurance to children up to age 26 is for the rich. With the current unemployment rate this is a sham. Recent graduates working part time do not qualify. Only if they DO NOT WORK at all. That's because if the employer offers insurance, which is required by law with 50 > employees, grads must pay out of pocket for far inferior coverage. Many rich children take a year off after graduation. Poor children work part-time while looking for FT work. Rich kids get quality health care.

People need to research the Rex 84 memo where they set up FEMA to run state and federal government if a national crisis broke out. It also calls for the round up of 21 million African Americans to be sent to military bases set up as prisons because they were seen as the biggest threat to government. I've been on gov run health care in this country, my case has been riddled with doctors offices misdiagnosing, unnecessary surgery that worsened the symptoms, misbilling causing blocked follow-ups, uninformative medical records, ill advise, prolonged sickness (almost 2 years), red tape, letters of appeal, blocked access to recommended medications, and 3 to 4 month waiting lists. It would be better to take a bullet to the foot then have government run health care, in my opinion.

Unison insurance is independent but also used by PA with government restrictions that don't apply to regular subscribers. It's been awful trying to get paperwork straightened out and it didn't help matters when the majority of pcp proved worthless. Believe what you will, guess it doesn't matter anyway.

The public option is now off the table. Because of the screaming by paid thugs and the bribes to Democratic Congressmen from insurance companies (Max Baucus, four millions dollars), the White House has withdrawn it. When Baucus' bill gets passed, not only will you not have an option to avoid private insurance, you will be forced to buy private insurance (it will be automatically deducted from your paycheck) putting billions more into insurance cos. pockets. It's all there in Baucus' bill.

Three years ago I contracted Menningococcus. I spent two weeks in ICU at 35 years old. With a $65,000.00 medical bill. Doctors refused to treat me because I didn't have coverage or money to pay. Obviously I couldn't work in ICU! Now, since I've had a catostrophic illness that left me with nerve damage in my feet, I can't get health coverage. we do need reform. My own doctor sat for 20 minutes belly aching because he doesn't want healthcare reform!!

If only more people knew about the system here: Mandatory coverage through private insurers who cannot refuse coverage. Massive participation ensures low premiums/ high value. What is the income tax rate there? What percentage of your income goes to taxes? That is where you are paying more than if you had an HMO or PPO plan in the U.S. today. You pay one way or the other. If it is through the govt management of it, then you pay for the extensive waste and corruption and maybe 20 cents on the dollar allocated for healthcare actually go toward your medical expenses.

My net income tax here is really only around 35% of my gross and I get good value for it. My premiums are under 100 EUR / month. If that's waste and corruption, I'm a satisfied customer.
It shouldn't be so hard for the US to design a system that works. There's no shortage of models. Nearly every other industrialized nation has some kind of system. The Dutch system, is a great model, and unoffensive to American ideology. For some reason, the US thinks it has to reinvent the wheel. And badly.

The problem with our healthcare insurance is that the government has regulated and limited the competition by causing it to be primarily available through employers and prohibiting competition across state lines. That has driven premiums up. Employers have lowered deductibles and maximum payouts- higher premiums

The Dutch system is affordable, usually co-paid by the employer, highly regulated, and highly competitive. I can think of 8 or 9 health insurance providers off the top of my head. How exactly does regulation force raised premiums? Americans are using ideology, posing as economic theory (or vice versa), and ignoring empirical evidence.

Clearly you don't have a grasp of the economics of risk management. No one forced anyone to raise premiums, it is supply and demand, and the increased risks that are covered, that set prices. By decreasing competition, prices can be raised without much consequence in the market along with the willingness to cover excessive risks. Opening up free markets would lower prices by discouraging these choices by both sellers and buyers. More people would be able to afford it, and better manage risk.

Just a couple clarifications:
The Dutch health care system isn't "socialized", if by that you mean single-payer like the UK's National Health. This is a common misconception in this debate. Second, the population of European Union is at least double that of the US. (Though the Netherlands is tiny in comparison, the economics of large-scale participation should be the same.)
The control of the system by powerful corporate interests is, indeed, probably the biggest elephant in the room.

Everytime you hand over a responsibility to the government, it gives them more power to say what you can and cannot do. Trading freedom for a government controlled health care system is a choice you are making. Well, I can tell you that the WHO is sort of the goto agency for world health data. They have no axe to grind which is why they are the go to agency. As to your other questions I do not know but i will check and so can you for that matter.

one last point for tonight. I think your equation the more government, the less freedom surely does not work. The government broke up monopolies to allow for greater competition, more obviously, it was individuals who kept slaves, not governments. It was the power of the government that ended slavery and fought to secure equal rights in schools, jobs etc.

I'm 22 and uninsured.... and it is not because I feel invincible... I understand exactly how easily shit can hit the fan. But, I'm self-employed, and each time I try to find coverage for myself it is a nightmare. Nobody will give me straight answers about coverage, and to get anything near what my friends with employers get, I would have to pay as much as I pay for rent each month... I can't afford that right now while I'm starting my business and paying student loans out the ass.

do a google search on HSA insurance. Look into the Health Savings Account and high deductible insurance plans and how they work. You will find very affordable insurance. And you will be able to save money pre-tax.

Hey There,
I was self-employed for many years in the US, and finally when I felt a little flush I bought a health insurance plan. What I call "if I get hit by a bus insurance" meaning: High deductable ($2500), but low premiums (around $100/month). I was young, and never had any health issues I never saw a doctor while I was insured. But at least it was the bare minimum. Now I live in Holland manditory private insurance, check it out and pay about the same for amazing coverage.

Let us see health care, the financial industry, the post office and airports are either heavily regulated or government owned. All are in bad shape, and the cure for Obama is more government control.

Let's see Bear Stearns, Lehman,GM, Chrysler, Aig WERE all privately run until they drove themselves into the ground...Who did they run to when they went belly up? The federal government.

if we had privatized social security, so many people would have been wiped out by this recession resulting in more home foreclosurers an even worse housing market, more bankrupcies and a deeper recession with a longer recovery

I was told when I was started work in high school that social security would let pay me back at full benefits when I was 65. BUT THEY LIED and up the age to 67.

Just writing off subject...We were trying to refinance our house thur Wells Forgo it has taken them 3 months and we still have not been done contacted. We just were contacted by them for an appriasal. Now we have been on hold for three months. So now we are going with another company. So the helps from the government did not help us. But we believe that you are doing your best. We believe in what you are doing. We praying for you!

Americans should consider eating healthy food. Avoid Hardees, Tacobell, Subway, Long John Silver, etc for 6 months and see all the fat melt. Eat veggies and never ever worry about health care. How hard is that to understand? Eat carrots to better your eyes thus less car accidents!!!
