They're moving fast shatter when they hit the water. It makes for a cool effect in movies to have bullets flying through water, but that's not how it is in real life.

@rawimpact In the Stern of the boat it has openings to let out the excess water so you don't sink! And they were fair sized waves. I was fishing in Costa Rico when I was 19. Boat was about a 26 footer or so. Four hours from sight of Land. Waves started & the boat was dipping into the waves on both sides. My Mom couldn't swim. There aren't words for Fear. Nothing to hold onto. My LAST trip that far out. But We had great Mack steaks that night!

@nobobs The line used to catch the fish is graduated. Which means you would use a 400 - 500 lb line to catch a fish of that weight. Though 450 lbs was probably an estimate.

Also some fishing rods exist with digital weight indicators.
