  • No I am not American. I am a 36 year old Indonesia who behaves like a 17 year old. It's 5.30 in the afternoon here. I actually wondered about 3 hours ago, what you were doing in the dead of the night, didn't you have to go to work Monday morning? I didn't want to insult you by presuming you are on the unemployment benefits list. I know things are hard over there now.

  • @verbotenco lol no I dont have to be at work today.. I dont have to go to work for another week. I have a federal job lol.

  • @verbotenco and please, enough of trying to act subtle please... we might be stupid americans over here, but we aren't retarded americans. And no I probably make a hell of alot more money than you ever will in your life.. up to you to believe it or not, dont really give a shit. Its you that has to be able to look yourself in the face in the morning when you wake up anyways.

  • um, dont wanna inerupt any arguments, but what tuning is this?

  • @Parkway808 my gues is standard because it appears hes using a B locrian scale to start off with to make his claim of playing D dorian because some bassist is playing based of D minor in the background.

  • @Parkway808 D standard tuning. DGCFAD.

  • its a natural minor with an major 7th and a diminished 5th

  • @lalometal98

Lo siento mi hermano, ok he dicho que el comentarista de publicar su vídeo si son mejores que este tipo que se suscribirán

    Dios bendiga a mi hermano

  • Gus G is the fuckin' master of guitar ! reaally love his band, also his style picking and playing guitar, but Daaamn ! his guitar sounds a little bad :S i know its to help us to listen better the notes but.... com' on jaja. By the way, this a nice lick |m|

  • keep in mind people anything can sound like C major instead of D dorian if A. you are playing over a C... and also if your licks are just C major or A minor licks and then trying to end on D. Try to have dorian specific licks. Actually play the D dorian as you would an A minor, have an absolute lick and arppegiated category. Emphesize the minor third and minor sevenths make sure when you play G that you emphasize how its 4th but also a major 4th, which is a huge difference than A minor.

  • @eddieisfiction sorry last sentence should have ended in D minor not A minor.

  • To all commentatistas, post your own video to see who can do better.

This guy doing a good job for free, specially to the people who wants to be a good guitarist. The credit is in him, he is unselfish, keep it up Bro.

I challenge you all commentators. Post your video. If you can do better than he can, i will subscride and i will even ask my friend to subscribe too.

  • @ferdielopez1 Gus is my favorite guitarist!1 Check me out covering some Firewind solos. I rush ed a couple of them but they are good! I'm StayMetal67!

  • @ferdielopez1 hey you are talking in espanglish men !! to al comntatistas.. WTF ! i challenge you al commentators ... WTF ! es mejor que lo pongas todo en español a que no te entiendan un carajo !

  • @lalometal98 I always want to learn Spanish. I hear it's easier than Portuguese, but harder than English? Mi kasa su kasa

  • it sounds like shit on the bass strings =(

  • I don't understand what's going on here... at least you all could have a bit respect...

  • Id say its definately D dorian. He even hangs the 6th and 7ths quite often in there to be sure that its a Dorian impression

  • this lick is in the old petrucci video "rock discipline" starting on the 2nd fret. same pattern too

  • Definitely a great little run for warming up or stretching out your fingers

  • @SuperGuitarZone maybe because zakk plays guitar and it would be pointless to have another guitsrist? Dumbass and fuck ozzy he can't even write his own lyrics he needs to just fucking stop. And fuck this Gus g douche

  • Ehhh this guy sucks. At least he uses the right guitars

  • Yeah sounds nice, but... can he play Smoke On The Water?

  • @guitardude901

Where does It say he does that?

  • @mikeb929man1 He does not say it in this video but with his band he plays in D, so to me its pretty logic that his guitar is setup in D with thicker strings to have a better tension.

  • @guitardude901 its not, because the first 2 top strings hes clearly playing what looks like a locrian starting point, meaning it has to be in standard tuning, because B locrian is relative to D dorian.

  • Why are you so rude to Gus ? Are you jealous? He plays a fantastic guitar and he is such a nice one...

  • There is a low D being played by a synthesizer as Gus moves up each octave so you can hear the root note 'D' juxtaposed against the 'run' he's playing . Regardless of style this kid can play his ass off!

  • This is the part of music theory that really gets my head warmed up (from the brain trying to work) Aeolean, Dorean, Lydian, blues, pentatonic, triads, inversions, octaves, minor, major intervals, fifths, thirds, tonics, tri-tones and a partidge in a pear tree. Can't we all just play two note power chords and be happy?

  • @0Heavy0Metal0 It's quite easy man. C Major is C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phyrigian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian, A Minor and B Locrian. It's just the relative root note of the scale, even though they consist of the same notes.

  • at 1:17 the b string sounds like gus is using a octave pedal

  • GUS G FUCKING RULES!!!!!!

  • The neck pickup sits upside down.

  • Doesn't Gus have sig pickup's out from SMD? I wish player's whom have that type of indorsement would use it in their tone.

  • Notice how his guitar I tuned down one whole step, thus making the lick easier to play

  • @mikeb929man1 I don't see how it is making it easier to play since he set his guitar to have the same tension as if he was playing in E.

  • Wait, why is your neck seymour duncan flipped? :\

  • Gus G is the most Epic guitarist out there today!!! Anyone who disagrees is obviously a POSER!!!!

  • @StayMetal67 Yes there are 3 minor modes. If you think you know better, let me tell you that Locrian is usually disregarded due to the dissonant quality. Go back to your theory book before trying to be smart on You Tube. Metal people won't go very far beyond the pentatonic box. Ask Kerry King ;)

  • @verbotenco Okay so you are unfamiliar with sarcasm? I know all of the modes and their characteristics and my chord scales, circle of fifths and so on! I did typo our previous conversation by saying D Maj instead of D Dorian and can't don't explain things right sometimes. Check out my YouTube vids I play more than metal and pentatonic licks! I use modes to create new chord scales but you are 100% correct by using D Dorian with D min chords. I didn't mean to dispute that!

  • @StayMetal67 If you realize that you have problem explaining things right, you shouldn't attempt to explicate and elucidate the elusive concept of modes to anyone ;) And arpeggios mesmerizes no one. Minimal theory involved, merely finger dexterity. Metal/ rock solos aren't hard. Expand your vista. Learn from jazz players and you'll despise Gus G on the spot. Guaranteed.

  • @verbotenco Your crazy dude!! I appreciate Jazz and have two theory books I read on Jazz and Jazz chord theory but it's not as hard as shred! It is the basis of good guitar playing I agree and many good shredders have Jazz backgrounds! I don't like how it moves around so much but I get alot of my chord theory from there and help with modulation and inner voicings! You guys rip I will say that but I Love Metal!! We will have to agree to disagree I guess!! StayMetal!! LOL!!!!

  • @StayMetal67 lol hey man dont worry about that guy, hes just being a douche... Im a jazz fusion player and I wasnt tryign to be a douche to you.. dont take him seriously... everyone has their own style.. I know a sweet drummer who could play anythign he wanted and for some reason he just likes playing hardcore... it happens lol... I wish he could jam with me, but thats just what he likes... dont think what you like is lesser than someone because they tell you so.

  • @eddieisfiction very true alot of shredders have good jazz backgrounds and fyi, alot of hardcore players definately do... they understand the rhythmic aspect especially and make great use of understanding their role vs percussion very well.

  • @eddieisfiction Everyone has an opinion and many people don't like Metal for sure! Thanks for the conversation earlier though!!! StayMetal!!!!!

  • @verbotenco dont be a douche to the guy man, not cool... if you have new ideas to present to him do so and be nice about it... dont treat him like a retard... hes not... hes a guitarist, and he wants to be the best guitarist he can be.... hes in a brotherhood, and treat him like it.

  • @verbotenco i mean honestly treating people that you think you are better than like shit is just stupid... I could probably wipe your guitar skills on my ass like a piece of toilet paper compared to what I can do... but I understand that playing guitar is not a competition, but it is a learning experience... you should try to learn from others and share your experiences with others... and not be a douche... its an artistic expression, not a NASCAR race.

  • @eddieisfiction Telling me to not be a douche then at the same time asserting of being probably able to wipe my guitar skills on your ass? Very typical of American (or any other white people) with short attention span (eyes rolling). Reminds of Obama sending troops to Iraq after receiving the noble prize, or something like that.

  • @verbotenco o yes the classic european argument, use the same argument to argue someone who used the same argument to argue the same argument you used right before. hope that works well for you. by the way, when you argue with americans, try to understand that being subtle about what you really mean is clearly understood. We all get what you really mean, and your subtley absolutely didnt work, and we got that you were trying to be a pedantic asshole about music knowledge.

  • @eddieisfiction No I am not a European and yes, I am the biggest dick in the world when it comes to music discussion. And I don't care what you think cause I don't know you. I also won't get into the stereotypical American homeland-security disposition like you just did by sticking up to someone you don't know (that StayMetal guy in case you don't remember) ;)

  • @verbotenco yeah injecting politics in a music conversation like you do makes you look like a complete douche... if you knew anything about me, youd know i hate homeland security and would wish it would be abolished... but somehow you want to project me with things you hate... like if you were a religious zealot. My guess is you arent and are actually the opposite, however exhibit zealousy reguardless do to parental upbringing... and it shows in counter-cultural activities

  • @eddieisfiction Hey dude, you are the one who started the arguing in the first place. I am a douche, an asshole, cocksucker, fag, zealot, anything. What people think of me won't do nothing to change what I think about me or what I am. And parental upbringing has nothing to do with anything. I don't hate anything about America. I am doing this for fun. You have ideas, unlike some other dicks who resort to profanities cause their brain got stuck. Good luck with your playing.

  • @verbotenco a little late to take the high road isnt it after comparing me to homeland security?

  • @eddieisfiction Since you are the one who wants to get pissed off in the first place, the ball is on me. So, no, it's not too late. I am an ass, remember?

  • @verbotenco except Im not pissed. although thanks for telling me your intentions... you obviously just want to troll people and act like a 17 year old little douche. Makes perfect sense now. Now I understand the whole calling me american and also comparing me to homeland security... you are a 16 year old american. I get it now... not even worth any time.. have a nice night

  • @eddieisfiction and for your information I was drunk hanging out last night and yeah i was on youtube late lol, whatever man...Im 27, married with kids, great job, doing just fine, and on top of that, I dont live in a smelly third world country, no offense... especially one populated with muslims... has to be a sucky world to live in for you.

  • @eddieisfiction That's the problem with you American people. So close minded. Come over to Indonesia. Don't delude yourself. Your fellow Yankees flock to my country to invest in the local bourse cause this is where the money is! Sunshine all year long, beautiful beaches, food, exotic culture. The muslims are friendly. This is not Malaysia. Bring your family if you have the time.Obama used to live here when he was little.Nice talkin' to you CIA/NSA/FBI/IRS/ The Fed hotshot ;)

  • @verbotenco o yeah we are the ones who are closed minded... you make fun of me, then when I make fun of you, you cry foul and claim americans are being closed minded.. lol absoutely ridiculous... and again acting subtle is clearly seen by americans and by no means save you from looking good. So just drop the act allright?

  • @verbotenco yeah there are more departments than that.. never claimed to be a FED as in an FBI hotshot... you watch too many movies.... and I actually have no problem with indonesia, I was merely showing you what you were doing to me... not so nice is it? Americans this, americans that... then when I say indonesians this... you are like "whoah whoah whoah stop not cool anymore!" You are a whiney trolling bitch, get lost

  • Comment removed

  • @verbotenco you are the kind of hypocritical person who says things like this... theres are 2 kinds of people I hate, those who discriminate based on race and nationality and make generalizations about people... and then also the americans...

    total hypocrit. absolutely.

  • @verbotenco and also who makes a comment liek that in respone to what I just last said anyways... thats just such a tool way to go. You should get out more.

  • @eddieisfiction LOL!! That guy is a little trollish and apparently doesn't like white people or Americans but I did provoke him some by contradicting him or so it appeared. I was actually just trying to explain myself and got confused! Typical white American right!!LOL!! There are a ton of snobby guitarists out there so we might as well get used to it! Gus G is not though! I had a meet and greet and a one on one lesson in Cleveland with Gus last October @ Peabody's.StayMetal!

  • @verbotenco heres the thing, there are plenty of kinds of music out there, and they are all great... now some artists within each genre can suck, but when you get the right artists in there, and they are not only knowledgeable, but creative and have a story to tell, you get great things happening.... and people respond to it... they also respond to people being pedantic assholes and it shows in their playing, so understand that. Technicality doesnt win 100%.

  • @verbotenco As far as Kerry King you had to pick the shittiest lead metal player ever! Thanks! I would liken his solos to a small child with a blender and a microphone! He wrote some good rhythms and melodic melodies but they needed a solo guitarist bad! As did and do many other Metal bands for sure! But the people that are good are good for a reason! Metal has the hardest solos out there IMO and Gus G is my man! Forget pentatonics dude we fuckin shred arpeggios and all kinds of shit

  • If I can play this, does it mean I can shred?

  • you remind me of George Kollias

  • Is his guitar broken, or is someone playing bass in this?

  • @Chainsawmaniacguitar actually killswitch is up so he plays it with the neck pickup and it sounds thicker :)

  • @GuitarYamsOut Can you hear what I mean, or is it just me? When he plays the highest note in the lick there is a bass playing somewhere...that and when he's talking about octaves something is playing the root note for each octave.

It's not on every note, so it's either there is a bass being played or there is some kind of buzz.

  • @Chainsawmaniacguitar he's using the neck pickup

  • @Chainsawmaniacguitar His guitar is not broken. Modes are all about the tonal center of the notes being played. His click track includes the bass notes in order to help us hear how the line sounds against the chord, otherwise you miss out on why this run 'sounds' Dorian.

  • @lonelydwightfrye Actually, I think the bass note is being played by someone offscreen.

  • @Chainsawmaniacguitar Those are active pickups for ya'

  • check out FIREWIND!

  • So many people hates this guy.. but WHY? He's a good player. He's humble since he keep posting lessons on Guitar World for ALL OF US even though he plays for Ozzy fuckin' Osbourne. And fuck, he's not a smartass like most of the people who post guitar lessons on Youtube. So what's the matter with you people?

  • Nice lick.

  • *plays something melodic*

    "HE CANT PLAY FOR SHIT"

    *plays something like this*

"HE HAS NO FEELING OR MUSICALITY"

  • guitar tuning wise isn't Gus in D minor not standard D saw it in a video he did for guitar world months/years ago. when I googled D minor it wasn't the same unless "open D minors" totally different. Anyone who knows more guitar theory than me feel free to reply.

its also beyond me why there isn't tabs in here for beginners for lesson wises I mean sure easily googled but common courtesy because not everyones pros on here watching this its safe to say.

  • @JYZProductions He is tuned to D standard which is a full step down. D G C F A D

  • @mikey989 I know D standard well, one of my Jackson Kellys is in it , but on another video he's saying the tuning is D minor, same thing as standard D or not?

by the way Ozzy fans who like his mid 80s to mid 90s sound more check out the band called Hellfueled , the singer sounds almost exactly like Ozzy and their last cd is worth the youtube "emissions of my sins"

  • @JYZProductions Awesome i have a Jackson Kelly aswell, Its not the same i think hes referring to open D minor maybe? DADFAD which would let you be able to strum all open strings giving you a Dm chord. if that makes sence?

  • nice

  • Beginning sounds like mush

  • Good hammer on & pull off... But I Dont Like This Lick. Speed, but no melody

  • A pro bassist was there to help Gus.

  • Is it counted in sixteenth notes???

  • What scale??????????????????

  • @smooretogo it says in the title of the video... D Dorian.

  • Dorian.

  • @smooretogo If you are in standard tuning you will have to play C dorian (A# Major) to get the same sound....coz Gus is tuned a full step down in this video

  • lol, he's not playing with the metronome at all...

  • Did people play anything before shred licks came along? Not that I don't like this lick but where's the variety?

  • head up high dual solo! yeah!

  • anyone else noticed that his pickups are installed upside down? wtf ??

  • anyone else hear someone else playing a pedal note? turn your volumne up and listen

  • why is his neck pickup tuned upside down??

  • Guitar looks clean, guys looks like an expert, HD camera, TONE IS BULLSHIT, bet thats a 15w Line 6

  • Nice lick and nicely played.

You'd think those who'd rag on this guy can play it better? Hahahaha. No.

  • I cannot believe the idiots that get on this guys back just because he ain't Zakk. I'm a fan of Zakk Wilde but Gus is just as good, and if anything he's more versatile. Open your minds a little, different doesn't mean bad!

  • I liked it...

  • JONIO, DORICO, FRIGIO,LIDIO,MIXOLIDIO,EOLIO,LOCRIO SÃO SETE MODOS DENTRO

DE UM SÓ...VC PASSA POR TODOS OS SETE TOCANDO QUALQUER UM...SE EU TOCO TODOS OS MODOS DE UMA SÓ VEZ, ESTÁ MAIS QUE NA HORA DE INVENTAR SOMENTE UM NOME PARA OS "MODOS"...GRANDE ABRAÇO A TODOS !!!

  • Look at that banana finger!! LOL

  • @UnnaturalGR if you're talking bout his fret hand index finger he is curving it to mute the higher strings from ringing out while his pick hand palm mutes the lower ones, it's a really useful technique

  • @schecterdoom I'm talking about his fret hand second finger.Check out real legato from Allan HoldsworthShawn Lane.

  • ...MY FRIEND...YES...NÃO É O MODO LÓCRIO ??? CARO BOZKILLER EU ACHO QUE

VC TEM RAZÃO??? E AÍ,GUITAR WORLD??

  • i don't like so much Gus G Licks !

  • haters always hating from empty ass channels. lol. if you want to insult a player such as gus g, at least be able to fucking play something half decent yourself. fuckin fags.

  • @metalvocalistwanted Why are you going through checking out their channels? No hate for Gus G, just curious.

  • digital sound... what a shit!

  • @jmmypage92 he plays randall tube amplifiers you fuggin dumbass.

  • you can tell he clearly likes playing the 12th and 15th fret

  • *faints* so beautiful. I'll give this one a try. kisses gus!

  • That talented bastard is using his hair to palm mute the strings - damn show off!!

  • @sugarcock1 he uses a bridge pickup in the neck position so he has a bit more bite in neck position

  • Meh, Gus, I think you can do better than that!

  • Smokin riff. I saw this guy in Toronto with Ozzy. He nailed everything. Great player!

  • @sugarcock1

He probably uses a bridge version of the pickup he uses in the neck so it has the text upsidedown and he puts it so that the screwcoisl is up.

  • flick the pickup selector, please.

  • a Gibson?? hahahaha!!!!

  • @DinoandDansMusic That's a ESP..

  • @DinoandDansMusic first of all its an ESP, and it looks NOTHING like any Gibson guitars. if u think it looks like an explorer, then not at all. it looks more like a Dean ML than anything else. Gibson doesnt have that shape of guitar and also it says ESP on the headstock... so...

  • @ChaosBurnsWithin It actually is like a Charvel Star...not an ML. An ML is a combination of a flying V and an explorer

  • @rpgavan ur right. its similar to an ML still though. its also similar to a certain carvin guitar but i forget the name of it

  • @ChaosBurnsWithin i was laughing at the fact that people were calling it a gibson, i know its an ESP, i have an ESP, so chill ;)

  • @DinoandDansMusic ahh i see. alright then haha

  • Sorry, but isn't this a A-Locrian pattern, than D-Dorian?????

  • @BozKiller he starts in a position which would be b-locrian. b-locrian and d-dorian have the exact same notes, because both are modes of c-major. if its dorian, locrian, phrygian or whatever depends on the bass note which you hear when he starts. in this case its d so he plays dorian. if it would be an a he would be playing a-aeolian which is the same as a-minor

  • @getsomecola : Hey thx, I've starting figuring out the thing here. I've made a mistake, as he is tuned down to D, so he starts on a B, not a A as I mentionned. So he starts as B-locrian, which is exactly D-Dorian notes, OK with that, except for the root/start note. But, he's starting from the B, not the D, or I've lost my ears/eyes???? If he had started with a D, then ok no question, but here its B, no ? or do I miss smtg in my modes understanding?

  • @BozKiller If you compare D Dorian to the D Maj scale you get this! D Dorian go 1/2 step down and get C Ionian and then a full step down to B Locrian which is where this riff starts!! It doesn't start on D but uses the notes and intervals of D Dorian! He starts it two modes down is all! This is Modal playing at it's best and I have to laugh at these people on here talking trash!! I promise you "I" know how to shred! Check out Staymetal67 for some Gus G covers!!!!

  • @BozKiller well i just checked. its actually a c as base-note. i guess its just the feeling of the lick which makes it dorian. i dont really get it why it should be dorian but im not an expert on modes to be honest ;)

  • @getsomecola It's tonal center needs to be D to be Dorian also the notes the bass plays would need to be in the key of D Maj for this to be Modal playing not C Maj! You play D Dorian in place of D Maj with a DMaj chord progression or D pedal!!!

  • @StayMetal67

The Dorian scale is usually played over a Dmin chord. Not major.

  • @shredtilyurdead You have to compare it to a D Maj scale first! The chords you play will NOT be in the key of C Maj but instead D Maj! So NO D min chord I'm afraid or you would still be in the Key of C Maj which is not Modal! Substitute D Dorian for the D Maj scale and you have the intervals of Dorian in D Maj which does sound both minor and Major due to it's intervals!! If you simply play D Dorian over a D min chord you are still n the key of C Maj and thus not playing Modal!

  • @StayMetal67 I think you're confused. You would never play D dorian over a Dmaj or Dmaj7 chord - unless your music was extremely avant garde :) The min3 (F) and min7 (C) would clash with the maj3 (F#) and maj7 (C#).

You would use D dorian over Dmin or Dmin7.

  • @shredtilyurdead Try this! Play a D pedal since the Dorian mode is more of a Minor with the flatted third but the rest is Maj intervals! Anyway D pedal tone and switch back and forth between D Maj and D dorian! Check out the sound it's cool! Now that is modal playing!! You are simply still playing in C Maj if you use C Maj chords!!!

    StayMetal Bro!!!

  • @StayMetal67 Dorian is not a minor with flatted third, but a minor with the sixth raised a half step, making it natural! The rest is major interval my ass. The rest is minor intervals, not major! You metal people need to work on your theory more, or just play chug2 chords ala Kerry Keing for the rest of your life.

  • @verbotenco I didn't say a minor WITH a flatted third I said more like a minor containing a flatted third! More of a minor mode like Phrygian and Aoelian. This is when we compare D Dorian to the D Major scale! Dorian compared to a Maj scale has a FLATTED 3rd and FLATTED seventh! You're still stuck in C MAJ intervals when you say Dorian has a sharped 6th! I'm in d Maj playing D Dorian like Gus G!!!! Two different animals my friend!

  • @StayMetal67 "I'm in d Maj playing D Dorian like Gus G!!!!" - He's not playing over D maj, he's playing over a D bass note. A single note has no major or minor quality.

  • @StayMetal67 You absolutely have no idea what a Dorian is. NOT ONLY Dorian is more like a minor: IT'S DEFINITELY A MINOR MODE. Take a minor scale, and raise the 6th a half step, you have a Dorian. So no, I am not stuck with a C major scale or any other major scale (where the fuck does C come from? I never said I was gonna play in a particular key, C, B, or whatever) FYI, there are 3 minor modes: Aeolian (natural minor), Phrygian, and Dorian. Improve your theory before commenting.

  • @verbotenco Dude C major/ Ionian share the name notes as D Dorian. If you look at everything relative D Dorian starts on the second degree of the C major scale. The 2nd of note of C major is D. The 2nd Degree of the C Major scale is Minor. So If D Dorian is being played in terms of music it would be played around a minor chord. D Dorian also starts off the 4th Degree of the A Minor scale/ Since thats the relative minor to C major/Ionian.

  • @2020jonnybravo Yes they do. But I look it from different perspective: If you want to turn C minor into C Dorian, just raise the sixth. And definitely D Dorian should be played over minor chord progression, suitably D minor.
