  • one of the best songwritters ever.. it's just that simple..

  • Is that Johnny Cash in the last part of the video? Very cool watching Walyon Jennings throw his guitar on the fire. I mean this was shot years before he died but given Walyon is one of the first country outlaws, a path which Steve walked for awhile, it is very cool.

  • @heeler1967

I am pretty sure that is not Cash, if you are referring to the close up of a face. I think that is the actor who plays the "devil" giving Steve the guitar at the crossroads.

  • I would give my left toe for one of those guitars they are burning!!! What a waste. As for the video, I think it's kool. Steve Earle is one great musician .

  • Really need to hear Steve play live some day soon. I've been missing out on a real song writer.

  • @celticbegonia A bunch of musicians are boycotting Arizona on account of that immigration law they passed over there, Steve's one of em. A lot of people are all pissed off about that. Personally I say who cares?

Personally you say who cares? you might care a bit more when you realize all your fresh fruit and produce is picked by the people you are not caring about - enjoy the canned fruit baby and support that legislation

  • A great song and so cool that he uses an ancient swedish car in his video.

  • I like the way the angel appears at 2:03 and hands him the book of life to sign before he's taken. Look at Steves face when hes handed the book.

  • @afar1

I don't think that is supposed to be the book of life... I see this as an allusion to Robert Johnson's meeting the devil at the crossroads and signing away his life in exchange for mastery on the guitar. So if it is an angel, I think it is Satan.

  • @nilradem The Devil would not present a holy bible.

  • @afar1

I could be wrong, but I don't think that fits. Even if the prop is a Bible (which isn't clear) this seems to reference the Johnson legend, not to mention the lyrics of the song suggest he the negative choice. "I got an empty feeling deep inside, I'm going over to the other side.... St. Peter said come in son, you're finally home, I said 'no thanks Pete, I'll be moving along." And the character in the song follows a father who left his wife and kids (as Steve did at this time).

  • @nilradem I read the story on Robert Johnson. He did the deal with the devil to become a maestro on the guitar. Steve Earl is an average guitar player, but a phenomenal lyricist and artist by blending heavy metal rock with country (so to speak) The prop in the video is clearly a Bible. Oh well, that's the great thing about art. It's do subjective and we fit it into our visions. If you like the RObert Johnson story then I'm all for it :-)

    Take care.

  • @afar1

Yep, art it is subjective... though you ignored the lyrics and I am pretty sure I read an old interview where Steve said this was a reference to Johnson. Peace, in any case!

  • i love steve earle....

  • Wot a Fuckin' Song !!!

Exit 0 is one of my fave albums eva!!!

  • the guitars thrown in the fire mean, i wont sell my soul for the devils guitar, burn em all.

  • @riggzys

I always took this to symbolize Steve leaving leaving Nashville for LA and choosing rock and roll over country (not that he really left country behind entirely), so this is Nashville burning. In any case, I think we are supposed to assume Steve made the deal.

  • Anybody know who all the guitar players at the end are?

  • @annesevenkeys

Waylon Jennings is definitely there at 3:32, but I don't know the others even though a couple look familiar. Nashville session players would be my guess. I would love to know.

  • I was watching the pyre of guitars and just thinking, "Noooooo!"

  • Awesome song, it gives me chills, every time I listen!

  • I first heard this on a morning kids program "No Limits" i think about 20 years ago....thought it was dogs then and still do. Galway girl got me through a tough time as well...... cheers Stevie "no thanx peter ill just be moving along" say no more

  • That just scared the shit outta me lol

  • Ha! This takes us to Missoula, MT on Saturday night 6.18.11 when Steve, Allison & The Dukes rocked us for three hours!!! Go, Steve, Go & THANKS FOR A GREAT SHOW!!!

  • The theme song to my life. Thanks Steve.

  • real good music. writing, singing, playing, ever'thing

  • Is that Waylon jennings at the end of the video throwing the guitar into the fire?

  • @toddgtrplayer Sure is.

  • You might say Mr. Earle keeps it real.

  • "Thanks Pete, I'm just movin' along' What a great lyric!

You gotta love the devil at the crossroads.

  • @sarahelizabethasher haha woz just thinkin the exact same!! x

  • Just my opinion, but the piano and the chorus at the end are what elevated this from a good song to a great one.

  • Who is the drummer? I saw him play with a number of different Nashville acts in the 80s/90s. Good player, good singer. Going to see Mike McAdam (The tele player on this video) on Friday. He's playing with the band he grew up with in Richmond, VA...The Good Humor Band

  • @rbl0925

Steve's drummer for this album was Harry Stinson.

  • the posers and theres the real deal, steve's the real deal

    , simple as that

  • Great Dylan and Springsteen. What else do ya want?

  • this song rocks!!! i love this guy!!!!

  • who else winces when they throw the guitars in the fire? even pretending, it still evokes pain to watch.

  • Comment removed

  • Waylon, no fucking way...loved this song for years just now watched the video! Waylon.......!

  • steve EARLE right lol you tell me

  • Awesome video... Awesome song...

    Nuff said.

  • Steve was great, really great while he lasted. But when you ride the white horse there's a butchers bill to pay.

  • @Bullet1960

You make it sound like Steve is dead - He has done more albums since he kicked the drugs in 1996 than he did before, and many of us would say he is still great!

  • @nilradem

Oops - date wrong - he got clean in 1994.

  • F5 to skip commercial

  • All states should have the guts to do what Arizona is doing. If you cant come here legally and learn english stay the hell out.

  • Great! Fxxk Vevo!

  • Like Woody Guthrie (who had written on his guitar 'This Machine Kills Fascista') Steve Earle has the balls to stand with the downtrodden. That's courage in a democracy. Saying that you are all for free speech when things are a forest of oranges, doesn't count.

By the way for those assholes here who are for that butthead Arizona law, let's see you go out there and pick your own fruits and vegetables!!!

  • @allendista Ha ha - that's great, but the suits are still eroding your democracy - and getting away with it.

  • i understand ..... i aint ever satisfied

  • irarawkstarr - I loves me some Earle but if you're against the AZ anti-AMERICAN bill then you shouldn't be effing commenting on COUNTRY music at all. Steve belongs in that group - although I HIGHLY doubt that you or ANYONE will provide evidence of such douchebaggery.

  • this is the Steve Earle I love . The new self-righteous , socio-politico , Ilive in the village-now , ANTI-AMERICA-bull-shit , is the anti-EARLE....a-CLICHE of useless ,been there - done - that , quasi-intellectual who gives a-shite. COME HOME STEVE EARLE....cool rockin' daddy BACK TO TENNESSEE . UR-A COUNTRY MUSIC SINGER -SONGWRITER . Forget about politics , because you can't change what CAN'T BE CHANGED . I was embarrassed for the impostor who had the nerve to get up and utter F--K THE U--.

  • @Mr31760 He can't "come home"---Nashville kicked him out 20 years ago.

  • @fek2000

And Steve has ALWAYS been political. The Guitar Town, and especially Copperhead Road albums were both critical of the Reagan and H.W. Bush administrations. Listen to Snake Oil, for instance. It was just a little more subtle because he was trying to play the game, briefly, but then said f that and did his own music.

  • FUCK VEVO

  • Steve USED to be so Cool........... AHHHH the good ole days

  • @mwk1977 USED TO?! What now?

  • @celticbegonia A bunch of musicians are boycotting Arizona on account of that immigration law they passed over there, Steve's one of em. A lot of people are all pissed off about that. Personally I say who cares? We all have our different opinions and beliefs, that shouldn't keep you from enjoying their music.

  • What's amazing is to listen to this, and think of what could have been....

  • It breaks my heart to see them stars burning up perfectly good guitars

  • Music that sticks to the soul Forever and ever

  • he meets the Devil at the Cross roads to get the guitar and sign a pact...does anyone see that hahahahhahaha

  • Last night i dreamed i made it to the promise land

I was standin' at the gate and i had the key in my hand

Saint peter said "come on in boy, you're finally home"

I said "no thanks Pete, i'll just be moving along"

Quite possibly the greatest verse in the history of lyrical songwriting. Purely amazing.

  • @craigosaurus I totally agree with you. I love that verse.

  • so spiritually moving
