Is that Johnny Cash in the last part of the video? Very cool watching Walyon Jennings throw his guitar on the fire. I mean this was shot years before he died but given Walyon is one of the first country outlaws, a path which Steve walked for awhile, it is very cool.
I am pretty sure that is not Cash, if you are referring to the close up of a face. I think that is the actor who plays the "devil" giving Steve the guitar at the crossroads.
I would give my left toe for one of those guitars they are burning!!! What a waste. As for the video, I think it's kool. Steve Earle is one great musician .
@celticbegonia A bunch of musicians are boycotting Arizona on account of that immigration law they passed over there, Steve's one of em. A lot of people are all pissed off about that. Personally I say who cares?
Personally you say who cares? you might care a bit more when you realize all your fresh fruit and produce is picked by the people you are not caring about - enjoy the canned fruit baby and support that legislation
I don't think that is supposed to be the book of life... I see this as an allusion to Robert Johnson's meeting the devil at the crossroads and signing away his life in exchange for mastery on the guitar. So if it is an angel, I think it is Satan.
I could be wrong, but I don't think that fits. Even if the prop is a Bible (which isn't clear) this seems to reference the Johnson legend, not to mention the lyrics of the song suggest he the negative choice. "I got an empty feeling deep inside, I'm going over to the other side.... St. Peter said come in son, you're finally home, I said 'no thanks Pete, I'll be moving along." And the character in the song follows a father who left his wife and kids (as Steve did at this time).
@nilradem I read the story on Robert Johnson. He did the deal with the devil to become a maestro on the guitar. Steve Earl is an average guitar player, but a phenomenal lyricist and artist by blending heavy metal rock with country (so to speak) The prop in the video is clearly a Bible. Oh well, that's the great thing about art. It's do subjective and we fit it into our visions. If you like the RObert Johnson story then I'm all for it :-)
Yep, art it is subjective... though you ignored the lyrics and I am pretty sure I read an old interview where Steve said this was a reference to Johnson. Peace, in any case!
I always took this to symbolize Steve leaving leaving Nashville for LA and choosing rock and roll over country (not that he really left country behind entirely), so this is Nashville burning. In any case, I think we are supposed to assume Steve made the deal.
Waylon Jennings is definitely there at 3:32, but I don't know the others even though a couple look familiar. Nashville session players would be my guess. I would love to know.
I first heard this on a morning kids program "No Limits" i think about 20 years ago....thought it was dogs then and still do. Galway girl got me through a tough time as well...... cheers Stevie "no thanx peter ill just be moving along" say no more
Ha! This takes us to Missoula, MT on Saturday night 6.18.11 when Steve, Allison & The Dukes rocked us for three hours!!! Go, Steve, Go & THANKS FOR A GREAT SHOW!!!
Who is the drummer? I saw him play with a number of different Nashville acts in the 80s/90s. Good player, good singer. Going to see Mike McAdam (The tele player on this video) on Friday. He's playing with the band he grew up with in Richmond, VA...The Good Humor Band
You make it sound like Steve is dead - He has done more albums since he kicked the drugs in 1996 than he did before, and many of us would say he is still great!
Like Woody Guthrie (who had written on his guitar 'This Machine Kills Fascists') Steve Earle has the balls to stand with the downtrodden. That's courage in a democracy. Saying that you are all for free speech when things are a forest of oranges, doesn't count.
By the way for those assholes here who are for that butthead Arizona law, let's see you go out there and pick your own fruits and vegetables!!!

irarawkstarr - I loves me some Earle but if you're against the AZ anti-AMERICAN bill then you shouldn't be effing commenting on COUNTRY music at all. Steve belongs in that group - although I HIGHLY doubt that you or ANYONE will provide evidence of such douchebaggery.
this is the Steve Earle I love . The new self-righteous , socio-politico , Ilive in the village-now , ANTI-AMERICA-bull-shit , is the anti-EARLE....a-CLICHE of useless ,been there - done - that , quasi-intellectual who gives a-shite. I was embarrassed for the impostor who had the nerve to get up and utter F--K THE U--.
And Steve has ALWAYS been political. The Guitar Town, and especially Copperhead Road albums were both critical of the Reagan and H.W. Bush administrations. Listen to Snake Oil, for instance. It was just a little more subtle because he was trying to play the game, briefly, but then said f that and did his own music.
@celticbegonia A bunch of musicians are boycotting Arizona on account of that immigration law they passed over there, Steve's one of em. A lot of people are all pissed off about that.
