Please go to deep house page for a real tape of the garage's closing night type Larry Levan into the search and enjoy! These mixes are nice see for yourself, who's in charge...
I was there about 3 years every saturday nite, The GARAGE&Larry tell me teach me everything for about music & life is something special...that why I still chaseing to make like PARADISE GARAGE in my Club about 26 years, here. foolish.is it! I can't get enogh....
I got to the Garage at around 11 pm Friday night, finally got in around 1am Saturday morning and stayed until the end on Sunday because I knew if I left there was a chance i couldnt get back in
It was phenomenal!!! I was totally lost for a while after they closed. Nothing could compare to being in your 20's, single and gettin it IN at the Garage. I went every Fri. and some Saturdays too. (GAY) night.Because gay people knew how to party AND because that is when Col. Abrams and Grace Jones would perform....
you never been to to roof top of the "G", in the wintertime, and had the beach party, was the +hit. ok, im from bklyn, had the time of my f*ucking life....
Never been to this club... a friend of mine posted a link to the Saint's closing night in 1988, and I thought that was honestly kind of dull and dated sounding. Someone suggested this Larry Levan Paradise mix - man oh man this guy was years ahead of his time, amazing mix, especially for 1987.
I was lucky enough to have been taken to the Paradise garage on my 18th birthday(by a good friend was a member) it was one of the best times I ever had...the people , the music..the drugs(lol) .was something that was out of this world...
So glad I had the chance to enjoy it for 7 years. Walking up that long dark driveway, not to mention waitning on that long line. And yes, I too wonder if the people at Verizon know where they work is sacred ground.
"I Can't Get Enough" I used to spin this at Dover AFB lol This is the dub side Ill manored ish Yeah I feel you I was about 22 and used to go up in that piece and be amazed at the speakers, everybody wildin out. The heal toe dance back then. WOW!
i tried holding on that weekend, they said if you left you couldn't get back in, we slept on the floor...me and my friends went from saturday night till about sunday evening late, couldn't dance anymore, we were spent. can't wait for the webster hall birthday celebration august 14th, 2011. the reunion at le poisson rouge was massive
Maaaaaaaaan SHIT!!!...I remember waiting on line in that dark hallway leading upwards into the Garage. Hearing the music thumpin', people shoutin' and you know the asses were wiggilin'. Couldn't wait to get inside, see we danced like we were crazy while waitin in line cause we knew once we got inside it was on til the break of dawn 4 REAL!!! You didn't get outta there til bout' noon and bout' 15lbs lighter after sweatin' and partyin'. Those were the fukn' dayz man. Somebody feels me i know it.
THIS WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE @ THE GARAGE RIP LARRY AND ALL THOSE WHO PERISHED YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTON LIVING IN THE BIG APPLE SHIT !!! DAVID LOZADA RIP
Mixed emotions here. I am a 100% Disciple of Larry, and was once a regular at the Garage. But THIS music (at least this first set, & I'll probably to them all) is NOT reflective of the Glory that was the Garage. Post 83, it all changed. Esp the music. The songs that made my soul SOAR (and my feet DANCE) just weren't being made (or played) anymore. It was...THIS stuff. Fine, in its own way, but NOT My Love is Free. By 85 I ceased going completely. This reminds me why.
Lavan RIP I hope he's in Paradise' Garage, warming up the tables. I hope they put my Webo pants in my casket. Anyone who knows a club/Bar in NYC, let a brother know. I wanna "Do that Shit"! "Can You Feel it"!!!!
Talk about DJ's today, Have you ever been dancing for hours and just start chanting, "LARRY", tears streaming down your face, sweat dripping off your body. Music, Lights and still the chants. Good thing your brought your change of clothes.
Spread the powder and get the bone out ya back....
@NeijiaBaguaTaijiWas it just me or did anybody noticehow every night you'd go to the Garage the speaker system was moved around...always looking for the best sound. Often immatated but never duplicated
I was fortunate that one of the well known DJs of the time was willing to help me get in the G with him that last Sat. nite (that stretched in to Monday) but I decided to just hang outside and people watch. The sad thing was the realization that this was also the end of NYC club music-after this there was still good NYC music but it all had that house music sound.
Best spots post G: Youtube summer NYC outdoor vids: Central Park Skaters After Party, Coney Island House, Fort Greene.
What more can be said? Tremendously Far Out and Uplifting, Inspiring and must be reinvigorated on the minds of club owners around the world! we need the Larry back and live in generations far and beyond! DJ.DOGDOG
I fail to understand why one of these multimillionaires (like perhaps Madonna - who wouldn't be HER without the Garage) can't or won't try to reproduce some of this magic and make another GARAGE. If you build it they will come! I'm 54 and I still feel the magic from those days! Closet thing to it now I think might be AREA (Shelter survivors)! Always thought If I hit that BIG ass lotto I'm going to try to do it!
@CGwithEd : Unfortunately, easy said than done. It would be very challenging to replicate a club like the Garage. On the business end; the costs to maintain without bar revenue today would be difficult on the return. Secondly, city & state government of NY have been "less than kind" to the nightclub industry. They are ignorant to the fact that clubs such as the Garage, Red Parrot, and others were the reason why NY was "the city that never sleeps". The industry needs a bigger voice there.
Man I loved Danceing all night, The roof top... Me and my girlfriend Rose lived in that spot.. I still get flashbacks. We had a crew always ended up there to welcome the new day
@tasa1010 Hey tasa, whats up?i just wanted to know if you were a member? And if you were there the last few hours until closing?I have some questions to ask you and/or anyone that you know stayed til the end!!!
Remember it like it was yesterday. I still collect the music, Larry's mixes in particular, where and whenever I can find it. There was and will never be a time like 3 AM in Paradise...except for 9 AM. Best time of my life, and I am 45 now. Viva Paradise 4 Ever!
I rememeber I was a gay man and had he world at my finger tips,I literally danced and then later went home with a few guys from tthis wonderful club and continued our search for heaven which was brolught out of me with every thrust from each man as I was gangbanged by them.Oh I want my heaven back but now Iam 62 and honestly an old man looking for younger men who looked as hot as I did during the early 80's.
man i remember the garage like it was yesterday also... i was new to the city.. coming from portland oregon... i have yet to experiance anything like it yet and i have travelled a lot... man i miss those days...
WOW! dont even kno where to start, i was at Paradise Garage in those wonderful yrs. i almost gave birth to my first born there in 1983. when i first started goin my mom new where to find me if she needed me. LOL i still have my membership card. i wish i can turn back time. Larry Levan was my friend HE IS A LEGEND! I will miss him always. RIP My brother Larry Levan ur music will live on within me!!!
i was 16teen wen i frst wnt there, my brothers were members 4years, yup it was summer time and they had da roof open..one of da best nights of my life; and i met larry dat nite a true legend...there will never be another club in manhattan like it (PERIOD)
i got off the 1train and the line to the final party was down the block and around the corner, i've never seen so many people crowded on KING STREET in my life, it was evident that i wasn't getting in, so i just took a minute to "take it all in" i began looking for old buddies, friends and pieces and one night stands(lol).....this is a PROMISE...WHEN i hit the LOTTERY... the PARADISE GARAGE *MILLENIUM* wil reopen with LARRY'S BLESSINGS FROM ABOVE ...4 GENERATIONS PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE....
Larry was the shit............I miss those days so bad...........RIP Larry.........no one could ever fill his shoes....I was like the last 10 people to leave the closing party........slept on the train all the way home...and missed my stop............lol
Larry Levan was exciting because he didn't just play records.. he told a story, he took you on a journey. I wish some of these modern DJS understood that. Yea I am house music snob but I would give my right arm to have a dj who could make me feel all the emotions Larry, Frankie and so many other old school djs could. Anyways...Garage FOREVER!
@lockness1980 I know i was to young to experience the Paradise Garage and Larry Levan but I've been listening to old sets by him and can see why he was the best!!
One DJ today that can def show u emotion and take you on a journey is Danny Tenaglia!
Thank you. I was unable to attend the Closing Party, a fact I regret each and every day, but thankfully I was there, long before it closed. These recordings bring it all right back, where it belongs, and allow me to hear what I didn't see those three days. I will always remember the first time I set foot on King Street...BOOM BOOM BOOM all the way down to the STREET!!
