this is by far among all the greats that appeared and partcipated and those that just appeared and avoided participation(disappointing jon stewart), Martin Mull version and delivery is masterful. PERIOD
i like stanhope's the best, mainly because I love stanhope, but this is probably second best. This version is actually tellable as a party joke though
There was a joke in the special features on this disc which was hilarious. It was about two hippos & apparently was Johnnie Carsons favorite joke. I would love to see it up on Youtube.
i dunno you haven't heard my mate telling it. it involves a catholic priest his cousin the islamiic (forgotten word so ill just say priest), a six armed woman who is married to the catholic priest, a 4 year old daughter, a 3 year old son, a baby, some blunt instruments and a jackhammer. hillarity ensues.
@MSunflower1991 I like the two prop comedy versions, the one with the cards and the one with Penn and Teller and a coke bottle.
Also there's this one guy telling the joke in the bathroom and there's a line in it that goes something like 'So my 6 year old daughter starts sucking off my 12 year old son, and I gotta tell you it is the most adorable thing you ever saw'. That had me cracking up.
@darkrai90210 - I think what's funny is that Gilbert tells a totally different joke and uses Martin Mull's (and others') version as a "Death or Oogoo (sp?)" joke.
@Bestmanme08 Mull worked with Mash's Maclean Stevenson and Gary Burghoff on two different eps of America 2Nite! Mull is also in great bio (Charlton Heston:An Incredible Life)at amazon!
Martin is a stunning painter and prolific. He is representated by reta branson, or something close to that in SAn Francisco and New York. I've seen his work at two shows, and the big stuff just knocks you out. He has heavy influence from the early Dick and Jane books, photo albums, and pics from his own childhood. He can paint anything, including photo-realism. THere are great books from his shows...check 'em out.
This is unquestionably the best version of this joke that I've heard. Mull's delivery is articulate; his timing, impeccable. And he earns an A+ for seamlessly incorporating the phrase "aborigine spermatozoa."
that joke is originally called 'death by boola boola'. say thing happens just at the end when the third person says 'ill take death' the tribal leader says 'weve never had anyone choose death before...' meets with the elders (aristocrats in this version) and comes back and says 'ok death... by boola boola!'
Martin Mull admitted in a Newsweek interview in 1978 that he never yelled in reallife. He is naturally lobotomized with a physical condition in the brain, thus he cannot get angry or outraged! My brother-in-law has a similar condition and he (my bro-in-law) was taken to a neurologist when he was a kid.
It's funny how whenever this joke is told, somebody always whines "No it's supposed to be [some other silly name]." Not only is the name irrelevant, but the joke has been told for many years under all different sorts of nonsense names, either with the punchline of "But first, [the silly name]!" or "Death by [silly name]!" I first heard it over 20 years ago as the "Ruru" joke. Martin Mull probably heard a variation before you were even born.
On his CD "Dirty Jokes", Gilbert Gottfried tells this joke, but he calls it "Oogoo". I also heard it in "Working Girl", only that time, it was called "Kiki".
funny how mull doesn't look like a comedian, he has a bit of a 'military' look about him, and he caught me off-guard when he delivered this joke so swiftly. amazing punchline.
i love martin mull ^^

the reson an aristocrats joke is so good is because 3 reasons
1) people will be telling the joke till the end of time
2)the joke changes with everytime its told
3)everybody has their own favorite one
