  • I have a question. The only why I can sing with my diaphragm without singing with my nose is closing my nose cavity (without pinching my nose). I use to pinch my nose when I sing because it helps me not to sing through my nose then I just started to close of my nose cavity when I sing. Is that right? I watched a video called "Female Voice Training Exercises : How to Use the Nasal Cavity when Singing" on Youtube. She recommend closing off your nose cavity (except on certain words/letters).

  • @MiaLeonora I am not familiar with "closing off your nose cavity", but if it works for you and isn't hurting anything; I'd keep looking around to make sure it's ok. How's the sound, have you done any demonstration on youtube?

  • @robertantonnyc

No I haven't yet but I'm looking into it. When I close my nose cavity completely and I just talk, it sounds like I have a cold but when singing, it sounds clear and not nasally because I'm not singing with my nose. I'm still working on other techniques to stop singing with my nose.

  • Thumbs Up if he have a Giant Lips :)

  • @Blo0dThursty We don't really do thumbs here but Thanks anyway.

  • hmmmmmm mhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhmmmmmmmm hm hmhhhh

  • watch?v=sVddLxv9x9E

Take a look at this one. My country's idol equivalent :p. This is years and years back but really nasally vocals. Funny enough if you look at the comments, everyone likes it :S.

  • @Wyzzard1234 You know what? I could actually deal with that. wasn't too bad. I think rather than actually being in her nose she's placed in what's called the "mask" which is kinda full frontal but not really all in the nose. She sounds pretty good on this. Now I don't know how she'd sound on a ballad but, like I said, this wasn't bad at all for me.

  • @robertantonnyc Haha I guess it was jarring for me cos I had it on my earphones at full blast. When I lowered the volume it sounds better :p

  • I hate nasal-ly vocals! Yuck!

  • @Modacolorist yeah, most times it grates on my nerves

  • explain what you're saying, then ill get what you're saying

  • How do you know if you're singing through your own nose.

  • @a999op I think the easiest way is to hold your nose and sing, if it's mostly sound muted and nasal; then you need to try to move away from that. It's not terrible if the voice ends up there sometimes, but it's a sound that many to most ppl find very annoying and unattractive (unless done for comedic effect).

  • u sound like Antoine dodson

  • ONLY MAN WHO SOUNDS GOOD SINGING FROM HIS NOSE IS MICHAEL JACKSON

  • @EmilioAndSherry Really, how do you know Michael sang from his nose...?

  • heej, I kinda have that problem, I can't sing thrue my mouth, only my nose, but I don't know how to sing straight and normal. Not through my mouth, what to do now?? I mean, I do try, but every time I sing, it just comes out of my nose again. I can't help myself ;'(

  • @lkkrlove maybe you need some1 who can help you like a vocal coach. You ever hold your nose and try to sing?

  • i think it helps me in some notes, especially when i have to open my mouth wide helps to streth(my mouth is really small i could say)

  • sing in the place where there is proper resonance which is no always the nose.

  • hey i ask u something..

ppl sayed that i can sing good not great but i need to work on my voice and i kinda sing from my noise so can i improve it by watching videos on youtube without the teacher!!??

  • @xonlyxjojox yes, you might be able to get some improvement by practicing with videos on youtube, but it's best to find a teacher who can pinpoint your problems and help you to improve them.

  • @robertantonnyc ooh thanks for the tip

  • lol u talk so calm. and i said sorry because when i click on the photo and i jugdes you before i watch the video. So i aploaigze :)

  • @trytohit ok, Thanks ; -- )

  • im sorry but your just awesome.

  • @trytohit why be sorry about that? ; -- )

  • stop posting stupid shit haterz.

  • great advice but i still dont know how to not sing through my nose

  • I was taught to go "find" the note in the bassin (bowels) and place it just outside of the front of my forehead so that it could almost be seen if I tried to look at it. It takes a lot of concentration and I'm not good at it, but it works really well, especially for "bad vowels".

I just watched a few of your videos they are REALLY informative. You also have an absolutely delightful personality. I look forward to watching more. Thanks.

  • lol, Sometimes it takes a visual to get some1 to work and produce. If it works, then keep using it.

There's no such thing as bad vowels; they're all wonderful. rofl

Thanks so much. Glad you are enjoying the series. I try to post 1 a week. Be Blessed.

  • lol. not bad advice...

but im sorry but your face is annoying...

sorry i had to say it

  • It may be annoying to you, but that's YOUR problem, not mine. How many ppl you think are thinking the same thing about your face? do you care? neither do I.

  • fucking say um. again!

  • good advice in general, for anyone who wants to start singing.

  • you have to be the most pleasant character along with eric arceneau as far as online singing tips !

    thanks :)

  • that's some good company there. Thanks!

  • i think i wanna learn how to do so. My idol is Billie Joe Armstrong and I just wanna noe how to sing like him. How am i suppose to find out how to learn it?

  • um, why not sing like you?

  • huh? I wanna sing nasal. But im not sure how does is sound like. I noe billie sings nasal coz i read bout it but i pretty much dont get it

  • why u wanna do that?

  • well, i kinda like how billie joe armstrong sings. Listen to green day. Listen to their songs. try checking out "she".

  • There are some ppl who have a little nasal sound who are Ok but it doesnt sound good to me most of the time.

  • yeah i noe. I wanna see if i sound good with nasal sound.

  • do you sound good naturally?

  • just average. I sound okay but im nothin extraordinary or so my friends tell me.

  • now why would they say that?

  • i dunno O.o i guess im just an average singer. I heard myself on a recording and i kinda agree with them

  • How bout Keith Sweat???

I mean the man is basically a GOD in R&B... He sings through his nose, but then again, some people generally talk like that... u know...

  • thanks for all your videos , i love them taught me alot and i think your really talented and cutee haha :)

    xx

  • Thanks. ; - ). Are you voting for me in the contest? Check my page if you don't know what I'm talking about.

  • You know, the hard thing if you don't have a vocal teacher, (i never experienced singing too far in my nose because i trained myself not to do this prior to having a vocal coach), is that a lot of singers or teachers in general tell you to sing forward and beginning singers mistake this for going more nasal, but placement comes with time, i noticed lip trills help give the right amount of air and focus to the voice =)

  • you are really lovely

  • I love patty too.... I have never heard her sing in her nose. Now I have to pay attention and catch it!! lol se what you did!? Toodles =D

  • Da da da da da. lol. You've heard it. once you know what it is, you won't forget it. lol

  • aaahhhhh!! Like in "you are my friend"??!! When she sings Nah, Nah, Nah, oh, oh, la da daaahhh, la da daaahhh.....,???

  • so how do you not sing from your nose? what excerises and techniques should I use?

  • best thing is to get with a vocal coach, but I think I mention a practice you can try in the video.

  • Robert.....Your voice is just F.A.B and you are just so lovely - we all want to hug you here in England - Rock on beautiful man!!!!

  • Thank You so much. Make sure to stick around, sub, and help me get to the UK in October.

  • lol, look it up ; - )

  • yeah.i love singing..but ppl say stop singing thru ur nose..i dnt really get it.

    help?

  • i have alot of problems with my sinuses being plugged up so i usually sound as though i'm singing through my nose i love to sing and it just bugs me to hear what i sound like is there anything i can do to keep my sinuses clear? nothing i've tried works

  • Are your sinus problems from allergies or something else. I have winter allergies and they just kill me. I try everything and much of it is just temporary relief.

If it's allergies, you may have to go to a specialist to find out what you're allergic to.

Recently I tried some Goji Berry juice. Look it up. Found the Goji Berries in Chinatown. It seemed to clear my sinuses and it's natural fruit you can put in hot or cold water.

    Good Luck

  • The mask is not in the nose, but behind the nose in the sinuses. The nasal cavity and the sinus cavities are not the same thing. This takes great education, insight, and depth. Only the best singers in history have mastered the mask.

  • i for the most part enjoyed this video, and i agree with you about people not singing in their nose. on the other hand though i am wholeheartedly and completly against your views on singing in the mask, if you are not singing in the mask then you are not singing properly.

  • we'll have to agree to disagree

  • you seem to be disagreeing with alot of people over the subject. hmm i wonder why that would be?

  • there's much disagreement even among experts. None of us are experts as far as I know.

  • what do u mean by this?

  • huh?

  • i dont know anything about singing so i dont know this term what does it mean lol ?

  • I sing, but when i listen to myself... sometimes my voice sounds abit whiney because im singing 'through my nose'.. how can i stop this, robert? :)

  • It's hard to stop it by yourself. Did I mention holding your nose and singing until you can feel where your voice is when it's not in the nose? That can help.

There will be times when it will land there, but it shouldn't be there all the time.

  • Sorry to interrupt, I am a trained opera singer. And for us, when training, we are told to sing as far forward as humanly possible.

Alot of times the nasal singing occurs when you are stopping the sound from running up your face, by either one.. closing your nasal passages or two, pushing the sound too far into the mask.

    Hope that helped.. Goodluck

  • We appreciate you stopn thru to leave your opinion.

At 21, you'd be 'training to be' an Opera singer; you wouldn't be a 'trained' opera singer. Opera singers have as much schooling as a lawyer. You may have just finished undergrad.

  • that really all depends on how long you've been training for. your voice may not be completly developed but you can still be a fully trained opera singer by 21

  • Maybe you should ask your voice teacher, if you have one, to check out my blogs and tell you what he thinks.

I have other teachers and coaches who also visit my site.

I do not claim to be a 'teacher'. I am a performer who gives performance-related advice. I'm blessed to be able to make a living performing and think I know quite a few of the ins and outs.

The rancor is not necessary. I could care less if you listen to me or not. My life is Golden. Be Blessed.

  • shurrup i find ur comment offensive towards people of an ethnical background

  • JEEZZ

IT'd Take 50 Years to Get Out Of Your nose!!!!!!

    LULZZZ!!!!

  • and more to get you off that crack. lol

  • ahahhahahah

  • yea son your nose is wide open

  • but I don't sing out of it. If I can bypass it, I'm sure everybody can.

  • i am SO jealous of your apartment (which i'm assuming it is because i can see your fridge lol). NYC apartments are so awesome.

  • true.

  • and I don't teach singing, no. I refuse. One has to get too involved in another person's life. lol. My videos are an entree, if you will, into becoming a professional with all the ups and downs, triumphs and disappointments that is the business.

Someone on here called it a vocal life coach. LMAO. I like that.

  • well that was a bit my point. Why say something when you cannot really show how it sounds and how it is supposed to sound. Give examples and correct. What's the point in saying to a painter, your green is too green and should be a bit more blue... What do we achieve by that?

  • everyone teaches in their own manner. Sometimes someone needs an outside opinion or catalyst to get them started. read the comments above.

  • right. if i'm cynical : anyone can be a prophet in USA...

  • almost certainly.

  • You talk complete nonsence. I hope you don't teach singing. I'm sorry to say that.

Singing in the nose is wrong. No one wants to hear that. What singing in the mask means is simply usting your head cavities to strengthen the voice. It's like the wood of the piano. All singers who want to sing without the microphone have to learn how to sing in the mask. It just means they use their natural resonation chambers.

  • singing in the mask is not a full technique. It is part of a technique. I make the point that if you stop there, you have missed the boat.

  • excuse me but he never said singing in the nose was a good thing...singing in the nose is preference..you hear singers do it all the time, but breifly...for example boyz II men have done it, beyonce and like he said patti labell....it can be annoying to some...but it's not wrong

  • i did not say he said one should sing in the nose... where did you get that from?

And it is wrong! It's not where one should sing. Point. One should make the use of the masque but not nose. It's close but miles away...

  • you know what...i'm not going to argue about this because it is a matter of opinion...singing in the nose does not harm one's voice in any type of way...so there....who says the art of conversation is dead?

  • great analogy

  • no...you're wrong. singing in the mask is operatic, it's entirely different from singing in your nose, to focus it forwards is correct it's how we produce of tones when singing classically. singing in your nose is ugly as hell and needs to not be done. you said that letting that go is singing properly but it's not, singing properly is embracing it. you seem to know what you're talking about for the most part, but you still have stuff to learn

  • actually I'm not WRONG. lol. There is disagreement, even among 'experts' on this matter. who's right and who's wrong? It depends on whom you ask from what school who followed who's training.

We all always have more to learn; that's what life's about. lol

  • i've been aware of that arguement for a while and i personally believe that you need to sing in the mask in order to obtain the clearest operatic tones. but you're right everyone believes different things now a days, and we'll never really know who's right i guess lol. so you mentioned in a nother message that you're a classically trained bass-baritine which is pretty cool, i'm a legerro tenor. do you ever sing classical arias on here?

  • missed the question before. I've thought of singing some classical arias on here, but I haven't been in that genre in over 15 years. I still might do a demonstration sometime...going from gospel to pop to opera. It's one of my ideas.

  • oh and you saying what you have on here in is really biased. you need to clarify that YOU believe it's a crutch. not everyone does, just because you believe it doesnt mean we all have to.

singing in your nose is different from singing in the mask. they're entirely different things

  • We can agree to disagree, my friend. Everyone has a bias depending on where and with whom they studies, what school and training, etc. People also argue about whose teacher is better, etc. It's sometimes more about what you get out of it and how well the information can be dispensed between two people. Thanks for the comments.

  • thats always what it's about, the talent of the teachers is not what matters, it's all about whether or not they are able to teach.

  • singing forward is not a crutch.

singing nasely is a bad habbit.

    two diffrent things.

  • yes, it really is.

  • you are so cool, i am a first time listener to you. i really don't like when people sing through there nose and if they would stop then they would sound a lot better. anyway i love ur videos!!!!!

  • thanks. glad you stopped thru. Make sure to come back often.

  • im still a bit confused

how would i know if im singing threw my nose

and how can i help myself ?

  • i study fashion design and i'm oh,so anxious to work and do my best, just like i guess you do. by the way, i don't wanna keep writing you one cliche after the other, but i'm so into disco and irene cara and the whole dancing in the streets and i keep picturing you in fame...i just think that ny is such a great place for artists and you know..not stars, but talented and hardworking artists who sometimes have no money, but still love their work. keep up the good work!

  • thanks, it's true. So many people are here working and living the artistic life including designers and journalists, fashionistas and writers. It's great to be able to do what you love for a living.

  • i wasn't planning on posting a comment today, but i was just web surfing with my friend here, gauricagherghina, and the second i saw you i just had this feeling of new york. you know? artist working hard and enjoying his work and having good and rough times, and all this in the most beautiful city in the world. oh, and i don't know music, but i'm a young designer and this is the kind of life i sometimes dream of. enjoy it! and i think you do..

  • thanks so much. Yes, I Love my life. LOL. What sort of design do you do?

  • i love you! not because you're lips are 3 times the size of mine, but because you are completly right.

  • Adios Mio, that means you have No lips. LMAO. Sorry to hear that. yayayayaya

  • I do , not as fine as yours though :) don't take compliments well, ha?

anyway, i was really glad to come across your post because i take singing lessons too and my coach uses the same method you speak about. people who don't know what the right way of doing it is rarely take it well when they are told that all they do is just try too hard.

  • it's true. It's not as hard as some make it; but it needs to be focused. thanks for chiming in.

  • arent u a little old too been on utube

  • aren't you a little dumb to be posting messages?

  • You make me wish I had a teacher. LOL I sang ONCE on Youtube.. After listening to you sing on other videos, I'm considering getting my vocal on, man! LOL Good advice. I detest nasally singers.

  • good advice

  • well i have a group out we called DAS and i just wanted to say that with ya tips we are performing all over our school and we are singing in other schools cause of you

  • I hope you get up some video of DAS, so we can see you worldwide. I know you're having fun. Much Love

  • My school is doing a "mock" version of american idol and i was wondering if you could message and me and tell me more about singing through your head. my dad said im singing through my nose.. these would be very helpful to me! please message me back

  • how can I tell you? do you have some videos posted?

  • Hello Robert...

What if my voice is so bad, that the only way to get to sing high notes is trough my nose...

I don't wanna sing with my nose... but if I try to get to higher notes with my real voice, my throat does't go there man...

  • It takes work. You dont 'have' to sing thru your nose, generally. If you can reach those notes like that, then you can reach them more naturally and organically.

  • Thank you man. I guess I will try harder.

The place where I live there are no voice tuttor or teachers... (If there are any, probably they are too expencive). So I will try to learn it by listening to other people's singing, and trying to immitate them...

  • probably means you havent checked around. If it's what you wanna do, you gotta invest time and money.

  • Hallelujah, Praise the Lord! Yesssssss! I totally agree! Thanks for posting this!

  • WOW, YOU SPEAK DUTCH?

  • lol. It's German. and just a little. I lived in Hamburg, doing a show, for 5 months and then toured for a little over 3 months in Germany and Switzerland. It was amazing!!!

  • MY HUSBAND IS FROM SWITZERLAND.

  • Mr. Anton!!! Thank you so much for posting this. That is EXACTLY what I have learned from my wonderful voice teacher!!!(you can hear him singing with me on my Lucia duet...I think you already have...)...Yes!

  • and your singing is really divine. I don't remember it being so powerful a few years ago. You're definitely moving forward. Many blessings.
