This is my fav. track off Headless Cross. I love the imagery of the lyrics, the riffs are huge as it slowly builds to a bone crushing middle and end. I love the Tony Martin era! Would rather hear him than Ozzy's warbling anyday!

Question for Sab fans: What inspired Tony Martin to write such a Satanic song? I've long wondered why Tony Iommi agreed to the song when he'd written the pro-God 'After Forever'. I'm not religious but I've always found this song's lyrics a bit much.

Brian May is the antithesis of the modern guitarist. Instead of mindless scale-blowing and an aboriginal tone, he defies both with his own hand-built instrument, gear, and of course style. He's still underrated to this day, and most likely will remain so.
@AnnaAnnaYes Ozzy isn't worthy enough to lick Freddie's shoes clean. Freddie Mercury was THE rock entertainer. Not a brainless chimp like Assy Assbourne.
The best Black Sabbath albums were recorded with Tony Martin and Dio , but Tony s voice was unbelivable . Live i think Dio s performance was better than that of Tony .
This song is based on an ancient story of an italian fisherman by the name of "Santo Della Ricadonna" who vanished without a trace while fishing for mussels and scollops in 1584. His native town of Stromboli celebrates his passing each year by cutting a peice of Cyprus pine, dousing it in vinegar and burning it on hot coals. The incense generated is said to create an aura of his figure and his voice saying "Misguided Mortals - You'll burn with me"
@silvyadav Exactly what I noticed after just watching afew live shows with this song.. he doesnt come close to this range.. he sings in much lower notes on these high studio nites.. liek hes changing the song in lower octaves or something liek that....
There is not best singer of Sabbath. There may be a best era, but not a best singer. Dio can't do justice on Ozzy songs, Ozzy couldn't do justice on Dio songs and same deal with Martin. They all suit their eras.
I'd hate to be "That Guy", but in my opinion, Sabbath reached their musical prime with Tony in the band. Ozzy, as we all know, can't sing, but he did have a strange darkness about him back then. Dio can definately sing, but I personally feel that his lyrics are too fantasy oriented for my taste (not saying that I don't enjoy his music). Tony is a lot like a mix between the too. Lyrics are dark, great vocals, and so much more. He's definately under-rated.
not that it's a bad thing, it's actually very awesome!!!
i never thought of sabbath as a power metal band, but Tony Martin's vocals as well as the overall atmospher make the epicness of the Martin-era albums power-metal-worthy :)
@truewarriorgod10000 I'd say Sabbath from Dio forth were Power/Doom Metal. Power Vocalists and Doom guitarist, though Iommi is way too diverse and experimental to be labeled.
If you listen to Geezer's solo stuff you realize who was the really "Heavy" member of Sabbath.
i used to be the guy who wouldnt give the time of day to tony martin until one day i started LISTENING and his voice though i still like dio better overall tony martin is nothing to spit it at

you are the "laugh" ..you dont know somethin about tony martin, he's not a musican? OH MY GOD I FUCKING SMILE! and tony martin has charisma! in my opinion he has a really warm presence on stage.
Correct me if I am wrong, but Brian May is one of the very few guitarists that Iommi will record with. Few people know this, but Black Sabbath was set to have a rhythm guitarist, but Iommi didn't want play opposite anyone.
The song is in a "halfway" tuning between D# and E. Most likely either they did it on purpose (some Machine Head and Pantera songs have the same thing), or the master tape was run at a too low/high rate, so the pitch moved up or down.
@COSANOSTRA910 Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi. If there wasn't Iommi there wouldn't be any Paranoid, Ironman, N.I.B and all these stuff you and all we love with Ozzy. Tony Martin is great IMO...
well lets face it... black sabbath wouldnt be black sabbath without iommi it doesnt matter whos singing. ozzy may not be my first choice but if it wasnt for his "swinging from his nuts" antics then sabbath wouldnt have blown up like they did. personally i think martin was the best singer but it all might not have happened if ozzy never happened...
@blacksabbathvids Without Ozzy Sabbath would never have gotten to where they were. Martin is a better vocalist but Ozzy is by far the better showman. Being the frontman isn't just about voice, it's about presence. Lets face it Ozzy has that in abundance.
Yeah Guys Listen to the MTV star Ozzy and leave The REAL HARD AND HEAVY ROCK FOR THE REST of US ....The Rest of us who are in DIO ,TONY MARTIN ,COVERDALE, UDO, DICKINSON ,HALFORD ,TATE ,LANDE ,ADAMS,HANZI,JSS,JLT,MATT B., and so on ....
@dadadruma Am not from your damn country you nasty piece of shit. Dont forget that Mercury and Sabbaths are from Europe, now go back to your american little town wc to masturbate a little
@haisulilol Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi. Just like Rainbow is Ritchie Blackmore and Iron Maiden is Steve Harris. I'm not the hugest Tony Martin fan in the world , but the guy deserves respect. If you don't like him, don't listen his music. That's it.
@senamuc that's pretty unfair to dave murray, adrian smith and janick gers, even brue, since he also wrote some lyrics... in addiion to providing the voice.
If it wasn't for Ozzy, there would be no Sabbath. If it wasn't for Dio, there would be no Heaven & Hell. Not saying the other singers are bad, but Ian Gillan and Tony Martin no longer have the voices they once had, Dio's no longer alive, and Glenn Hughes has his own thing going on. So the answer remains: Ozzy.
@spoondogcuz Im a huge sabbath fan and do enjoy tonys vocals like i enjoy dios vocals but you have to admit that with ozzys unique vocal style he was perfect for what sabbath was between the gloom doom metal and his mental patient vocal style sabbath with ozzy was and still is one of the most unique bands who were the fore front of heavy metal now as sabbath progressed as musicians the dio years fit perfect just like the tony years did the sabbath argument is like kicking a dead horse.
Yo are all idiots who keep saying OZZY on this track!! This lead singer is Tony Martin , the 3rd singer of sabath, Ronie James Deo (R.I.P) - was the 2nd. Dumb asses......
People who would badmouth Tony Martin I'd have to wonder if they have mental issues. If I had a band I'd rather have him as vocalist then 90% of others today.
I have liked every variation of Sabbath. i cannot say that Ozzy is Sabbath. I am a big Ozzy fan, but he wasn't there only singer, and I think if he had stayed in the band all these years, they wouldn't have lasted as long as they did. Some of the best songs came from the Tony Martin era. I wish i could still get my hands on Headless Cross and Tyr. Sadly, they, along with Technical Ecstasy are out of print.
@TheCrackedBrick "It's not Ozzy" or "It's not heavy enough" is probably the answer they will give. People are idiots. They don't know how to appreciate good things long before they're gone. This entire album is a masterpiece. Amazing band, amazing songs and Tony Martin does some of the best metal singing ever recorded. I absolutely love it!
I have this album...it's so bad ass I dont care if ozzy's not in it...

The song is in a "halfway" tuning between D# and E. Most likely either they did it on purpose (some Machine Head and Pantera songs have the same thing), or the master tape was run at a too low/high rate, so the pitch moved up or down.
VortechBand 1 year ago
@VortechBand Knowing Sabbath history, the master tape thing doesn't seem like too much of a stretch.

Ozzy is far away from being Black Sabbath.
He stayed 10 years only and this band already is 40 years old.
And the unique member who stayed these 40 years on the band is TONY IOMMI.
Black Sabbath is TONY IOMMI.
You don't know anything. You're just and Ozzy fan,not Sabbath fan.

Good singers, but I think Gillan may just top them all.

well lets face it... black sabbath wouldnt be black sabbath without iommi it doesnt matter whos singing. ozzy may not be my first choice but if it wasnt for his "swinging from his nuts" antics then sabbath wouldnt have blown up like they did. personally i think martin was the best singer but it all might not have happened if ozzy never happened...
blacksabbathvids 1 year ago
@blacksabbathvids Without Ozzy Sabbath would never have gotten to where they were. Martin is a better vocalist but Ozzy is by far the better showman. Being the frontman isn't just about voice, it's about presence. Lets face it Ozzy has that in abundance.

haisulilol 1 year ago
@haisulilol Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi. Just like Rainbow is Ritchie Blackmore and Iron Maiden is Steve Harris. I'm not the hugest Tony Martin fan in the world , but the guy deserves respect. If you don't like him, don't listen his music. That's it.

@senamuc no, iron maiden is not steve harris.

@senamuc that's pretty unfair to dave murray, adrian smith and janick gers, even brue, since he also wrote some lyrics... in addiion to providing the voice.

@fourtysevenblog Yes, the whole band is great but Harris is the leader...

Now for an on-topic comment:
This song is so underrated and I'm not sure if Black Sabbath still performs it, but I hope they do.
NightmareSnake 1 year ago
If it wasn't for Ozzy, there would be no Sabbath. If it wasn't for Dio, there would be no Heaven & Hell. Not saying the other singers are bad, but Ian Gillan and Tony Martin no longer have the voices they once had, Dio's no longer alive, and Glenn Hughes has his own thing going on. So the answer remains: Ozzy.

Es una gran canción, la introducción me encanta! :)

@spoondogcuz Im a huge sabbath fan and do enjoy tonys vocals like i enjoy dios vocals but you have to admit that with ozzys unique vocal style he was perfect for what sabbath was between the gloom doom metal and his mental patient vocal style sabbath with ozzy was and still is one of the most unique bands who were the fore front of heavy metal now as sabbath progressed as musicians the dio years fit perfect just like the tony years did the sabbath argument is like kicking a dead horse.
kingstea1 1 year ago
Yo are all idiots who keep saying OZZY on this track!! This lead singer is Tony Martin , the 3rd singer of sabath, Ronie James Deo (R.I.P) - was the 2nd. Dumb asses......

@radicaleffect Actually, Ian Gillan was the 3rd, Glenn Hughes was the 4th, and Tony Martin was the 5th. But Gillan only did one album.

People who would badmouth Tony Martin I'd have to wonder if they have mental issues. If I had a band I'd rather have him as vocalist then 90% of others today.
andy32capp 1 year ago
Lets just agree that every singer that graced sabbath's presence was great in his own way, Ozzy, Dio, Gillan, Hughes, Martin were all gods

Sadly, they, along with Technical Ecstasy are out of print.
smoothedge69 1 year ago
I don't know why people dislike this album so much when it's not half bad. Beautiful melodies and vocals, what's the problem?
TheCrackedBrick 1 year ago
@TheCrackedBrick "It's not Ozzy" or "It's not heavy enough" is probably the answer they will give. People are idiots. They don't know how to appreciate good things long before they're gone. This entire album is a masterpiece. Amazing band, amazing songs and Tony Martin does some of the best metal singing ever recorded. I absolutely love it!
