@BNSFbeagrett9647 na i live on the east coast. norfolk southern runs through my area. we have 2 mainlines going through our small town. one was used for loaded coal trains, and the empties would come on the other one. now their doing loaded and empties on the same track. the coal track has no crossings, so they dont blow a horn

Questions, please:

1. How do they decide whether locomotives behind the lead unit will face forward or backward? Is it random? Does it matter?

2. Same for truck semitrailers... some face forward, others backward. How come?

The locomotives 2nd 3rd and so on, it usually does not matter, they can face either way. The truck trailers, I assume you are reffering to intermodal trains. Those trailers are set which ever way the trailer hitch on the car is facing. So the crane operator MUST set them a certain way, for safety and to keep the trailer from flying off the train. Hope that helps.

I think the only reason that K5LLA is overpowering that K5HL is because I think the GEVO has a restrictor on it.

Not so much. The K5HL has 4 bells facing backwards while the K5LLA has only 1 bell pointing backwards giving the K5LLA more sound projecting forward than the K5HL.
