In Detroit, I could not hear this version this year, because ALL of our radio stations were sticking to their top 50 Xmas playlist of songs. Now I heard every jack legged, phoney, copied version of this song they could play, but not this beloved version by Charles Brown. SHAME ON THE LOCAL DETROIT RADIO WORLD!
My Mom played this over and over and over from Christmas Eve to Christmas it drove me crazy and i begged her to play something else. Now it is not Christmas for me until I hear this.
Wonderful memories. Family would go to my great aunt's house every Sunday and for the holidays. Families were closer then. Most of us lived in the same city. My great aunt was the best cook I've ever know, although my mom and cousin came close. This was in the 50s and 60s. There was so much love. My brother and Dad are gone now and my Mom is 89 with dementia, but I still have the good memories.
@Sakja You hit it perfect. You are absolutely correct in that families were closer then. I can remember when my great Aunt was still living in the 60's all through until she died in the mid 70's. We spent more time with family than anyone else. Holidays, weekends, late night weekends, weekdays. In those days family really meant something and it showed. Most of our family also was in close living distance back then. Most migrated from Texas to California in the 50's and all lived close by.
I played lead guitar for Charles Brown from 1976 to 86, except for 81 to 83 when I was in Hawaii and he was in New York.He was 55 when I met him, and he was a hot Hammond B3 player, and sharp on the bass peddles too. I was 24. All the piano stuff sounded even better on organ. He said he wished he knew me when he had better gigs. I did too, but the better gigs came back.
Who's with me on this being one of the ALLTIME best Christmas songs EVER! This song is from a time when things and life was so much more simple. This song has so much power and soul behind it! I remember it all the way back from the late 60's all through the years as my mom would play it during the holidays, and especially while preparing the Christmas Dinner. Food smells from Turkey, Collard Greens, Sweet Potato Pies, and so much more would be streaming through the house.
Dad would always play this on Chrsitmas eve while Mom was cooking Gumbo and turkey. I can still see the 45 spinning on the stereo. He's gone now, but thanks to the internet, I can always play this and remeber him and his "Hi ball". RIP Dad....love you
This song reminds me of my dear, dear, sweet mom. I remember her preparing the Christmas dinner - listening to these wonderful Christmas songs. I love you mom and I will see you again one day!
The memories are so clear during this time of the year, growing up is the 60's and early 70's.Mama and daddy playing all the wonderful soul Christmas songs and music filled the house.I loved!
Oh ! How I remember My Mother playing this song as a child...Beautiful Music Very Good times @ Christmas ,so much Joy & Love though out our Home, sometimes I Wish those Day could Come Back.....Merry Christmas !
Reminds me of growing up in Parkway! Big shout out to Louise Stanley on 7th Ct. Won't be the same without you baby! I Love you Lou... Thanks for helping to raise me and make me the man I am!
This happens to be my mother's favorite christmas song of all times. I love it myself but now days it makes me wish my daddy was still here with us.. Bt I know he is with us in spirit. thanks for posting this song.
what a melancholy, yet masterful rendition, the original Mr. Charles Brown. He also gave us the "Driftin' Blues", "Merry Christmas, Baby" and so many other great blues ballads. He was also a great pianist. Give credit where it is due. DJs are more likely to play imitations of this tune, but rarely do they play the original. I believe it is for the same reason they play more elvis than HRH Chuck Berry, more beatles than HRH Muddy Waters and HRH Little Richard. krxn11
How many of you remember the late 60's, getting then what was the BOMB gift, a brand new state of the art "transistor radio". These were the thing to have back then. They always had their own unique smell, something to do with the material that was used to make them back then. I'm sure getting these radios back then many of us had the GREAT Charles Brown blaring from our own little radios.
This song by him and Stevie Wonder's "Someday at Christmas" are the two greatest Christmas songs ever written and performed. Hands down...I don't care what anybody has to say to the contrary...
Reminds me of Christmas at Town and Country in Monroe, La in the '60s! All the college kids coming home from Southern, Grambling, Morehouse, Howard and partying! Memories!
@neatwheels And you my friend can "Keep Dreaming"! There is not a version of this song out there that's better than Charles Brown. This is TRUE soul, and a BEST ALLTIME Christmas song.
The last time I saw Charles Brown (Jazz Alley in Seattle) I asked him to do one of his Christmas songs. To my delight I heard "Bells will be ringing that glad, glad news ...
This song has special meaning for me. My wife passed away at the hospital on Dec 11, 2008, the same day it was uploaded on youtube. This song was playing on the PA when she passed. I couldn't stand to hear it for a few years. We hoped that she would be at home for Christmas, and she did go to her real christmas home. The last line..."They'll be no more sorrow,, no grief and no pain, means a great deal to me now. Thanks for sharing
@MrJodyRDandridge... yes i remember Lucky 13 am Radio, I remember Roscoe, Willie Popcorn, Sly Stone... I am in Oakland, I remember summer days in DeFermary Park [Bobby Seal Memorial Park} Billie Stewart Singing Sitting in The Mac Author Park.. shooting "B' Ball. or the Brothers in the park or on the corner harmonizing... Those were the Days my friend....
@nubiandoe Funny you mention Oakland. I am a Diehard Oakland Raider fan from the bay area, who now lives in Colorado, home of the Denver Donkeys!!!! Can you imagine that! Yeah, nuthin' like the summer days back in the 60's and 70's, even the 80's. In those days we all had a more personal contact with our radio station DJ's, and the music was just so much better. I often wonder these days how some of these groups and singers are EVER even considered. Many are just horrible. No talent!
I thought I was the only one who cried when I heard this song. It is a real heart felt song. Also all who reflect back on those beautiful wonderful black love christmases at home with mon and dad are some fond memories. Love and miss those days of years and love ones gone by. I think I'll keep them for life. God bless Mr Charles Brown for being part of those special times, RIP Charles Brown, Mama and Daddy N-net ink clara, eggie, helen ms bobbie and all the rest of the people who are with God.
@fairfax17 These songs were times when family was FAMILY. Aunts and Uncles meant something. You knew your cousins closer than ANYBODY else. Holidays were spent with family. I don't think a week went by without us spending quality time at Aunts, Uncles and cousins houses, sometime late night up until midnight on a school night. :) Those were great times!
As with many of you, I grew up listening to this great classic during the holidays as early as the late 60's throughout the years. My mom, Mrs. Bernice Dandridge (RIP) who passed in Nov. 2009 would play her 45 while cooking up great old style holiday fixings of Turkey, Collard Greens, Sweet Potato Pie, Mashed Potatows, Green Beans, Stuffing, Chocolate Cake, Candied Yams, Potato Salad, and so much more. I sure miss my mom! Anyone who has lost a mom knows what I'm talking about! Love you Mom!
This is the first time I've heard this song for the holiday season -- always seem to miss it on the radio. You're right, cherrieowens1, it never is Christmas until I hear Charles Brown.
The tears started flowing when I heard those church bells. And that voice.
Thank you, Mr. Brown. Words simply do not express.
To me, the most wonderful Christmas song ever recorded, never failing to bring mist into my eyes. If you can find the cd or record on the King label, buy it, because the whole mood is just one mellow song after another. It's a sad, but an ultimately uplifting musical treasure, not to be missed by anybody who feels good music in their soul.
@oldarmy57: I hear you! I've heard this song at Christmas for all of my life but now when I hear it I always reflect back to my first Christmas away from home, overseas on a military base in 1986. I vividly recall so many grown folks sitting in the enlisted club in tears as this played.
When I listen to this song, so many memories of mom in the kitchen, my siblings and I cracking coconuts for the cake, and liking the cake bowls. It was a great time of the year. I miss my mom and dad, and others that have gone before me. My brothers and a sister. May all of you have a bless Xmas.
Many artists have recorded their own version of this beautiful song but Charles Brown's version which is the original is still the best. They can't even come close to touching it.
@MsKimmi65 seconding that. my mom always did deserts on xmas eve. lights off in the living room so the lights on the tree reflected off the walls. man...
This song brings back so many great memories of my late parents; especially my father. He sang this song every year for as long as I could remember. Whenever I hear this song during the Christmas holidays, I always think about him. R.I.P. dad, you are deeply missed!
THIE WAS MY DADS FAVORITE SONGS AT CHRISTMAS OR NOT HE LOVED THIS SONG AND I MISS HIM SO MUCH I LOVE U DADY MR. ROOSEVELT ROBINSON THE WORLD GREATEST DADS
best xmas song that remind me of my mama and dad. So many memories around this song. so here to you Helen and Roy Bost...we missed you and love yall so much. Play it togeher like in the old days. Rest in Peace. we'll keep playing it down here and will ALWAYS keep you in all of our hearts. To all who passed on on rest in peace and much love
best christmas song that represents my mama and daddy r
"Rest in Peace" Helen F. Bost and Roy E.Bost you will always be in our hearts ...each day and double time on christmas especiallly when we hear your song......love always your childrens
I know right it's just not Christmas until you hear certain songs and this is one of them followed by The Temptations singing Silent Night, Nat King Cole with The Christmas Song, Lou Rawls doing Little Drummer Boy..once I hear those in my moms house I know it's officially CHRISTMAS TIME>>>>>>>>YEAH!
@cherrieowens1 This takes me right back to my childhood. Uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, and friends all visiting the house. And the grown folks dranking that "special" egg nog and listening to music like this. Those were the days........
Remember my Dad playing this during Christmas season. Brings back wonderful memories of family and home, even though it's a sad song. The best version I've ever heard.
This is a hit in my family. Daddy would play it every Christmas. I remember the whiskey and eggnog and friends around the tree. At Chicago Cabrin Green Rowhouses,
I am of the class of '63 and this old slow dancer is great. At my age you cherish songs like this and the memories of teen years it evokes. I really like the short guitar solo, real bluesy.
>musiccollector1975, I love the Eagles too, but checkout this tune by Johnny & Edgar Winter...... You WILLL like it.. I promise. (just have find the quality version, its on here)
Thx again for shareing nemesisofthedevil, I never knew who origanall did this tune.. now I do.. :)
I make a motion we designate January 25, as the other half of Christmas. A holiday we go to our favorite restaurant or tavern & celebrate the joyous spirit of the season. Then return home "chill out", take down the decorations till next year. It removes the blah of December 26, lets us show the photos of Christmas past & maybe sing ..." I came home for Christmas" by charles Brown....
The very best version; this is the one I grew up on and I don't know why you have to rush through it. and I'm with Swanson, it was like biscuit waiting on the butter. It's the snizznik!!
Christmas is not Christmas!!! without this song. I love and miss my mom & aunt they played this every year for many years, now the legacy lives on they are both dancing in heaven now.
I remember my uncle and I playn this song back in 75 on a 45rpm record and me playing it real slow. thats what made me love this song the most! what an Christmas icon!
Hi, thanks for sharing this video. This is the original recording of this song from the King label, I remember my mom playing this back in hte 60's when I was very young.
Why can't I download this version(R&B) of the song, its better, my mama used to stay up all night playing this song( RIP) If anyone knows where I can download a copy of this version of the song, please let me know!
I REMEMBER THIS SONG AS A KID WHEN MY MOM PLAYED IT I'VE PLAYED THIS SONG FOR XMAS EVER YEAR THE CD FOR 21 YRS. I HOPE MY KIDS DO THE SAME WHEN IT'S THERE TURN. MERRY XMAS TO ALL

Anyone else tired of radio stations that only play the later remakes? Then do as I do and tell them to play this one.

I am of the class of '63 and this old slow dancer is great. At my age you cherish songs like this and the memories of teen years it evokes. I really like the short guitar solo, real bluesy.

Great song. Good fidelity is lacking here though, poor low frequencies.
