I was at Boy Scout camp a couple days ago and my friends saw a bear up on the mountain, and then a few hours later they had us all locked in the mess hall because they had to chase it out of camp!
These bears will pick up speed and exit the very moment they take notice of you. Last summer, one was on the road in front of me, and I simply cleared my throat, and he exited into the brush. After this I clapped a few times and continued down the road. This was on a hike to the old Monte Cristo townsite, washington.
Pretty good shot considering the poor light; nice glimpse of a bobcat too.
We got a close-up view of a bear while camping at Hume Lake CA in 1998. Unfortunately, rangers shot and killed it because it was behaving aggressively around the campground.
