Although I am Japanese, this song will feel the romance of Russia and Gypsy. My distant ancestor was a traveler might seem like much of the continent. I think that this feeling in my blood. Nostalgia is very resurrection.
Cool. The first time I heard this was in the game Syberia and I had to hear the original though the version in the game was great too. The beginning piano and bass kind of sounds like Autumn Leaves.
Jazz is freedom to sing a song as you feel and enjoy. Singing this song as jazz may not go well with the traditionalists but Sophie does a great work and the band as well, beautiful voice; and, being Russian makes it an "authentic" style.
I am from Uruguay and i don´t understan the russian lenguage but my grandmother is from russia she come here with 13 years old now she is 90 years old and she has alzheimer and sometimes she sings parts of this song and now i could descover what is obout. I think she listened this song when she was a child and now is the few things that she remember. Very rare !!
1) Ochi chyornye, Ochi zhguchie, ochi strastnye, i prekrasnye! Kak lyublyu ya vas! Kak boyus' ya vas! Znat', uvidel vas ya v ne dobryi chas! (Repeat first verse) 2) Ochi chyornye, ochi plamenny I manyat oni v strany dal'nye Gde tsarit lyubov',Gde tsarit pokoi, Gde stradan'ya nyet, gde vrazhdy zapryet. 3) Ne vstrechal by vas, ne stradal by tak Ya by prozhil zhizn' ulybayuchis', Vy zgubili menya ochi chyornye Unesli na vek moyo schast'ye. (Repeat first verse)
I love this rendition of one of the most beautiful songs in the world! Sophie sings it better than anyone! I think she might be Russian born, but lives in France? In any case, She is amazing! Love her voice, and her Russian is perfect, with a hint of an accent! Sexy and Charming... Brava! Molodez!

@ratnik44 In Russian eyes are "glaza," not "glazy" (irregular plural). The word is strastnie, meaning passionate, not strashnie, meaning horrible/scary. Ochi is an old word for eyes that's no longer really in use in modern Russian. In any case her pronunciation is pretty bad.
@sbonfiglioli Thank You for reply. Do these ochi mean the song is very, very old, or it's not in official Russian, but e.g. in some kind of the Russian dialect?
@Cluelessron rebroff sings like god. if God has voice he sounds like Ivan Rebroff. But Sophie is also great! Maybe it is something in the Russian soil. Who knows...
Strange way of interpreting this song. It appears to me she is taking its tragic meaning away. It is a simple love song, but profound in its simplicity, because it captures the essence of unconditional love, to love even without being loved back. But it is an immense pleasure to listen to her, I say.
Amazing.. such passion... the degrading comments on this thread are from people who neither have talent nor can appreciate it.. I wish the comments functionality of youtube could be moderated to keep out that sort of trash.
To add, I'm not a big fan of Russian music as I left my homeland as a child of 5, and the language sounds more rough to me then English, however she does a great job of smoothing the language and jazzifying the track.
Instead of recognizing innovative creations, you criticize. If Milman's jazzy rendition of a Russian classic is disgustingly immiscible why the shit does your Russian ass even speak English? Respect cultural diffusion you ignorant and irate imbecile. As if she deliberately tried to disgrace mother Russia.
You called Ivan Rebroff's Great Traditional version "Soviet propaganda". Perhaps you could do us all a favour buy qualifying your comments. I happen to think that
Sophie Milman is one of the best (If not the best) new talents to appear on the world stage In the past few years, and this is the best jazz version of this song I have heard.
If you know of a better one PLEASE tell us what it is, then we can judge for our selves.
First I don't remember the circumstances of that comment but I know that I never referred to him as Soviet propaganda, perhaps something stupid someone said. Second of all, this jazz version of a good song is god awful and an insult to the Russian volk. This Zhidovka has 0 talent, she is absolutely nothing. Also : I think all jazz versions of this song are awful, this one especially though. Don't "jazzify" a great song.
It's certainly not the best version of this song, but she's such a gorgeous singer! And it's so nice to hear her sing in Russian. I'd love to hear her sing old Russian jazz.
Sophie Milman is Russian born, but now lives in Canada. At the age of 25 she has established herself as an international jazz singer.
While this is not one of my favorite songs by her, it shows once again her talent, range and sophistication. I have never heard a song by her that I disliked.
