That is an excellent explanation of duende and it is 100% applicable to this animal. Another term (in German) that is somewhat similar and also applicable is funktionslust - a being doing what it was BORN to do.
@Adrain30 No, Duende doesn't mean goblin. Listen to the video again, Jack Whitaker does an amazing job explaining exactly what it means. Plus, I put an explanation in my description..
Very well stated Mr. Whitaker. I could not agree more. He was something truly special. Unearthly in his grace, dominance and ability to captivate the human heart.
Greatest creature ever born on the planet earth...not a human...God-like perfection no one will ever see again...the mythical, magical, irreplaceable Secretariat.
@cmf4321 No human will ever be able to suck a big dick as great as you have done for the past half century. You belong in the Porn stars hall of fame right next to Linda Lovelace and Marilyn chambers.
I have no idea who it went to. But I agree, why the hell auction it off? Why not donate, give or sell it to a museum? Although it was auctioned off to bring in proceeds for laminitis so..
@Andaluzsecretariat Hi, you made a comment on Secretariat's "duende" dos anos ago :) Thank you... I think you say you are Andaluzian, a devotee of Secretariat. Who better to can say that Big Red has Duende than an someone from Andalucia, Spain. (of course my keyboard doedn't have the accent mark). How was my translation. I took quatro semestres de Espanol, but can't speak it.
#1. That 1/8 pole should have stayed right where it is. Sounds like sacrilege to me.
#2. If there was no getting around auctioning it off, I would have used my income tax check and paid $5,001.00 for it. Sounds kinda cheap for an item with that much historical signifigance.
As a two-year-old, Secretariat was named Horse of the Year, an honor that rarely goes to such a young colt. But some doubted his "superstar" tag after he finished third in the Wood Memorial, his last performance before the Kentucky Derby.
Along with stablemate Angle Light, who won the Wood, they are 3-2 Derby favorites. Secretariat rockets the final quarter in 23 1/5 seconds and pays his biggest mutuel, $5.00. Lucin L "cashes" in big time.
Lucien Lauren is always referred to as a "distinqushed" trainer. Even though Secretariat was disputably the greatest race horse historically, Lauren got him beat 5 times.
-Once as a maiden 5 1/2 furlongs (too short)
-Disqualified in the Champagne Stakes when he was allowed to run with a canker in his mouth
-Once to the older 'Onion' when he was allowed to run with a virus.
-Once to the older 'Prove Out', both horses trained by the same trainer Allen (The giant slayer-
you have it exactly right, but everyone covers for the trainer, gentlemen's decorum, It was Wood Meml not Champagne, bad call said he bumped StopTheMusic. Lost Woodward bec LL sub'd him for Riva due to slop. S was trng ligntly for MOW Stakes. He was big and needed 5/8 mi zingers. In Maiden he was slammed sideways, jockey said he groaned and was climbing, a smaller horse wld have gone down, another 1/16 and he'd have won it.
Thanks for your confirmation of what I always believed of Laurin. You might want to check the race of Oct 14th, the 6th start in his 9 race, two year old season, were he was dsq'd.
The horse he supposedly bothered, WAS, Stop The Music, the eventual winner of the "Champagne".
Secretariat won his first stakes at the Spa on August 16th, my birthday. The time of 110 flat was the fastest time recorded there that season.
yes, my comment wasn't clear, trying to be brief to get a lot in. I read description of the Champagne again. S took off as usual on final turn w/such determination. I read somewhere that today he wldn't have been dsqfd. But, hey, those big red shoulders. The abscess was the Wood Meml when he came in 3rd. cont.
Yes I am. He lost to his entrymate Angle Light, who, in my opinion, could not even hold his saddle. Then he comes back and blows them away in the Ky derby in 159:2 breaking Northern Dancer's recod time of 200: minutes.
In the Derby each 1/4 mile was run faster than the previous one. The last quarter mile in a remarkable 23 flat.
_And finally to his stablemate- Angle Light as part of an entry. A horse that couldn't hold Secretariat's saddlebags. I always felt that race stunk as he stole it on the lead all the way with 'Big Red' clocking in a poor third. His breeding fees sky rocketed but he never produced a decent runner.
Terrific clip!!! ♥

BOO About the 1/8th pole! What a remarkable piece of history!
Now, I don't know who bought it, but if some museum did that's a whole different story.

Do you remember any details of the loss to Angle Light his entrymate?

Are you asking about details of Wood Memorial? I've been obsessed with that story as I read more and more.

That was Angle Lights breeding fees sky rocketed.
Also "Allen Jerkins" was the trainer of record that beat "Big Red" with two separate horses on consecutive occasions.
Simply one man's opinion.
