Yes he is, smart. And you are lovely. Finally someone gets to the heart of this devastating song. Someone else, I should say. I heard Barbara Cook sing it sans mic, in an encore to her Mostly Sondheim show. Hence I know its heart. She took my breath away, and her rendition still reverberates, its memory haunts and soothes me simultaneously. I recently saw the terrific Encores revival of the show...but this title song was woefully lacking in depth. Thanks for bringing some of that here.

I love Sondheim and usually understand his work (even the most complex) but I never understood this song.

This character is troubled by her inability to relax and be able to do even the simplest tasks. She does well and succeeds at the hard things she tries to do, but she can't do simple things like whistling. She's troubled by the fact that "what's hard is simple, what's natural comes hard." She wants someone to show her how to be able to do what she can't...to be a better person (in my belief).

I've looked more into this and understand the character of Fay a lot better now. She's so uptight and an accomplished nurse; she can "read Greek" or "slay a dragon any old week", but when it comes to doing something that anyone can do ... she can't.
