As an old practical joke, players would leave ashes and a red bead on the ground waiting for other players to come across and pick it up. When together, the ball of wool or ashes and red bead looked very similar to a dropped Santa hat. -runescape wiki (this is what i was looking for, couldn't find it. try it out its hilarious)

It's a free online game, so you don't have to buy anything. Just go to the RuneScape website and create a free account. But if you want to upgrade your account, it costs some money. When you upgrade your account, you get to use more stuff (weapons, armor, more places to go to, and so on).
