I don't believe aggression is the answer, we need long term solutions like neutering campaigns and education and that is exactly what most welfare organizations do. to me that is practicing what you preach.....

Almost, I´m happy to know that some of the dogs were rehomed in Holland and Germany...

I didn´t know that Greek people don´t take care of dogs and cats. I can t understand why they are so cruel with the animals. They are living creatures as we are!

Those dogs dont have it too bad, aside from all the shit everywhere. But they had space to walk and run, and a nice little shelter.

All that kennel needed was to be cleaned up and it would be ideal for the dogs.

and the people left the others to die to, they went to athens I've seen a lot to but this did make me sick!

This must be so embarrassing for the good Greek people to know they have such a huge animal abuse problem and a govt who doesnt care.Please go to the Greek Animal Rescue site and sign the petition there & try and help these poor helpless creatures.

U.K.& other countries are accused by greek authorities of using greek strays for experimentation, what mentality!!! - It costs about 4000 euros to bring a dog out of Greece. We have plenty of strays in the u.k. ourselves if that was the purpose!

We want the authorities to become aware of these slides shows, because they continue to claim that Greek people are 'sensitive' to animal concerns and that cases of cruelty are 'isolated incidents' ... the truth is different! the dogs were taken to the shelter of animal care samos. some of them were in a to poor state and help was to late but for some of them it had an happy end , they were rehomed in Holland and Germany.

This was the property of people who moved to athens and left their dogs behind to slowly die... HORRIBLE!

My grandparents are from Samos and I was there for 6 months in 1994 and I was sickened by what I saw. People's attitudes in that country are just disgusting. I want to return and help at the shelter and help.

I remember getting the whole 'Greece is the cradle of civilisation' thing fed down my throat when I was younger - bullshit, they USED to be. The people that live in what they call 'Greece' today have nothing in common with the glories of the Greek city states.

A while ago somebody told me a joke .... about a young Greek, who proudly announces to a 'foreigner' how wonderful Greece is and that it gave the world civilisation ...back came a reply: "pity you didn't keep some (civilisation) back for yourselves". Indeed!! After a nightmare 'holiday' in Greece in 1987, I founded an organisation in the UK to help animals in Greece .... Samos shelter is one place we support.

I find it embarrassing that the situation is so bad that foreigners are compelled to do something about it. It's sad because the first ancient civilisation to consider the question of animal welfare was the Greeks, Pythagoras amongst them, who is often credited as being the first animal rights activist. He was a vegetarian and believed animals should be respected because he believed they had souls like humans.

Greece is full of crazy 'animal hoarders' and although it's an EU country and benefitting enormously from the EU subsidies and tourism, poisoning of stray is still seen as a cheap answer to a stray problem.

The 'stray problem' isn't caused by an inability to look after the animals, it's the indifferent and contemptuous attitudes that today's 'Civilised Greeks' have towards God's creatures. I'm Greek, but I love animals. My girlfriend and I own 7 dogs and they rule our house. Thank God I don't live in that shithole.
