This was one of the more depressing anime moments and you can't even get the full scope of it from watching this scene alone. Theres a long lead-up where they run away together and lead a pretty happy life together for a few weeks. All the while you know it's not going to last - it's pretty awful. Although I agree with others that despite liking this show it's confusing as fuck to an almost Evangelion like status.

I didn't tear up since I wasn't really paying attention when I was watching, but if I really payed attention I'm sure I would've teared up. Asahina is probably my favorite girl character, second to Reika even though she didn't show up as much, same with Asahina. Ayato is now really serious, but it ends up wrong, just one kiss would have made me like this episode way more. Probably one of the most interesting episodes I've seen so far into this anime.

Up till now, I think Asahina would be my favorite if she was with Ayato. I like Reika, but if she's part of Ayato, than it can't work out. So I wanted Asahina to be with Ayato, I knew she would die, seriously I think Asahina could of made Ayato happy.. I don't like the woman who's 29 years old and likes Ayato. I thought that too at first. Have you seen Evangelion? The whole instrumentation idea is basically from there. RahXephon went a lot deeper into it. Like Evangelion Watari wanted to find a way to recreate the world. Ayato has that power.The ending was just his ideal world based on the world he already lived in. So see it as a chain of events affecting one another until they are unified (tuned) If all the subplot stuff hadn't happened the new world would not have turned out the way it did.

I agree it seems a bit arbitrary, but having watched it a second time I think it's just another take on overcoming a problem.

Each time Ayato 'powers up' it's because of overcoming a mental or emotional block. It's internal, as opposed to Eva's (sorry) mostly external solutions to a problem.

This is quite possibly one of the most powerful moments in anime. When I first saw this ep years ago, I couldn't believe what happened. Despite all of Ayato's best intentions, he ended up losing what he wanted to save the most. RahXephon is one of the best series in the 00's.

it's no crime at all to find inspiration in some other previous works. Eva itself took after Megazone 23, but still it was a masterpiece. So it is for RahXephon. It surely has some elements, willingly put in, that point to Eva. But still it's marvellous and breathtaking in some parts. And there's a huge difference that saparates them. Eva is basically a psychological story on how a mind deals with itself while growing up, RahXephon is, after all, about a marvellous love story.

firts of all, i´m too a eva fan, but if you are going to criticize something first do a little researche my friend :), rahxephon is not a eva rip, is a rip of a very very very old mecha anime called yuusha raideen or brave raideen in english, and is exactly the same history, so i see a long time ago the first one and i don't like rahxephon, ayato is too emo compare to the badass hotblooded akira, but i agree in this is the best scene in all rahxephon, sorry my english is not very good ^^u

It's true to say that RahXephon owes a lot to Evangelion, but calling it a ripoff is an oversimplification. From a similar premise and aesthetic, Rahxephon creates very different characters, themes and tones.
