I had made my drivers license on this car. Although the 1970s beetle models had a crushing zone and the drivers compartment remained intact, you must consider that the gasoline tank was intalled inside the crushing area.

The car has no formal "crumple zone", it was first sold in 1938 mind you. The best they did was install collapsible steering columns.

I think it performed very well. Unlike most cars of it's age it managed to handle a crash into a offset object. This is the worse kind of crash test. The door might crumble but the passenger compartment was still intact. The footwells are very open so no plastic dash and supporting arms to crush legs. Poor Herbie!

I was (and in a way still am) a big fan of the old air-cooled Bug. However, my friend died in one after a crash. The old Bug has the fuel tank in the front of the car, unprotected, and in a metal case that is highly vulnerbale to sparks. The car caught fire immediately after the crash as jorikrademakers says above.

Not bad, actually. Notice how the cabin remained mostly intact, and that dummy could have walked out of it had he been wearing his seatbelt. Remember, the motor is actually in the back of the vehicle, and the front is mostly empty space, which makes for a very good shock absorber.
