  • One question, and if you can be so kind of answering anybody with experience when you are doing short turns does it matter the ski you are whering i use rental skis that i get from the store

or do you need a specific ski to do this movments !?

  • @Cuban348 use what ever you like, though less flexibility is better

  • GREAT JOB!! You and those like you make youtube great.

  • nice video, but now it starts to annoy me that we have no mountains in Denmark... and we only get some snow sometimes, and when we do get some snow, we get far too much ...

  • @jinz123321 MOVE to Colorado, USA!

    Problem solved!

  • this is great practice.it is for hard places.

  • Great!

It would be very interesting if you had the carving turns without having this one down... For me, this is the way to get down the slope the first time, before attempting to carve it (I have cheap health insurance).

    Thanks!

  • this looks like a great practice drill. i like the way it was explained, start easy by sliding sideways, then add turns. hopefully i'll be trying this tomorrow!

  • He says to turn with just your feet and ankles, but the video shows the skier on the edges of his skis as well.

  • cancel that on the guitarist im sick of this jam

  • gapeerrr

  • He shows 'pivot-slips' which we practice to get better at edge control, at ski positioning, at fast - but oh-so-smooth ski steering from one side to the other, at weight distribution, at smooth-and-controlled body vertical positioning, at keeping from head to hips pointed down the hill, at maintaining hand position. All these are needed for short turns that are fast, smooth, confident and safe. The pivot-slip is easy to practice, then change its timing, and voila! a short turn appears!

  • is this tutorial for drifting or skiing.. more than half of the tutorial is that guy sliding :D

  • @KumRuzvalt93 uh... skiing is sliding. Over the snow.

  • wow he makes those transitions look so easy.

    maybe its the snow

  • yeah.. the snow XD

  • thanks, very good lesson)

  • thanks ! I like the music and your instruction!!!

  • I think I really need to practice this.

I have bit problem on deep slope with bumps. I believe if I do more side way ski practice. It should give me more control on speed and direction.

  • what if you have flat feet no arch?

  • go get custom insoles... you can get heat molded or foam filled, there are also many other options... your boots will be way more comfortable and will fit perfectly with foam filled but its pretty pricey

  • youre doomed

  • I'm getting cold just by watching it!

  • always think about ur upper body. look down. knees to the hill.

then it might be veeeery easy.

sry my english is really bad, but i think that will help u.

normally the poeple of my groups are angry and want to get with their upper body to the hill. and that is the biggest mistake u can do.

especially when u do short turns on red ot black tracks, cause u get too fast if u are not in the right position.

  • I'm at level 8 and trying to get this right - finding it hard to place the pressure. Any tips?

  • oh , all of you carving people. this method is still the most powerfull method of controlling difficult runs. if you are overwhelmed by the red or black run, this method will provide the most controll as you can stop whenever you want with confidence. carving won't - but it looks better.

  • Yes like you siad carving is more fun and looks better but you get going to fast on steeper slopes and it takes longer to stop.

  • I would argue that carved short turns are a better option on steeps, be they icy, or with chopped or spring snow. Less tiring and better control. With shaped skis, is harder to skid than to carve. But I wouldn't go as far as to dismiss the video. It shows nice skidded turns.

  • Yes it does.

  • I have always had a problem with this - I am off for a few days in March 2009 and will certainly try to put all the points into action

  • this guy is good

  • Very good skiing!

As you demonstrated, expert short turns involve a combination of sliding and edging. Some new skiers get all caught up in carving without learning a basic falling leaf. Also, good skiing NEVER gets outdated. I can watch Stenmark, Tomba, Von Grunigen and Benny Raich. It's all good!

  • Isn't this vid outdated? Wow, this seems really an old school skiing, so far from carving. Anyway useful to keep in mind as an historical technique.. still useful in some rare casis

  • I agree with Lanchek. Yes you can make fast turns this way, but if you're on icy terrain or in the bumps, you're skis are going to slide right out from under you. This guy isn't getting on edge to turn he's just skidding into each turn. I did this for years untill I took a tune up lesson and my instructor yelled at me.

  • so this ISNT just carving in fast-motion!?

  • OK, this is for novice only. If you want to do it like it's supposed to be then this ain't the way to do it.

Sliding down only causes you to rotate during skiing which results in over rotation and the edge won't "bite" itself in the snow to make a turn. You're not supposed to turn the end of the skis in siding. You need to do it with the ankles and knees (matching out the angle is your goal). That results in a true short "carving" turn.

  • Short turns owns large turns

  • ski bin noch nie gefahren.jetzt steht an go-kart,bowling,

  • Very good video! Thank you very much! The technique that you teach here is very educative.

  • it works better on a dry slope and it is easier bcoz the slope surface is consistent...so if u gunna say something know what ur on about. btw i was the 2005/2006 under 17 scottish dry slope champion

  • wht ur name then

  • my name is 08octavarium8

  • Congrats then!

  • and no it dosent cz i tried it today muppet so if u gunna say something know what ur on about

  • and no it dosent cz i tried it today muppet so if u gunna say something know what ur on about

  • does this work with ski mats because i live in a part of england tht dosent gt much snw

  • I think you live in a part of England where you don't know how to post a comment without repeating it 4 times, as well!

Yes of course it works on a dry slope, or are you trolling?

  • As a beginner, I have a question. Is it not possible to do these sort of short turns while carving? Because this video definitely doesn't show carving.

  • Yeah well, i don't really know how i do it, since i just refined my way of skiing the last time i skied and actually started to carve, but this, i guess they are carving in the beginning of the turn, then "sliding" at the end of the turn, which is good in steep slopes, so i dunno

  • To Panserborne: No. There's a limit to how short a turn you can do while carving. That is expressed by the "turning radius" of your skis, which is typically around 15 metres for an all-round carving ski. But a "short turn" is much, much tighter than that (and is a prerequisite for making quick corrections in rough terrain and to control your speed on a steep slope).

  • ah noone told me that before. i've just used my edges. so he's saying just rotate the skis by sliding them out to each side?

  • I disagree with this.. if you do a proper turn, using the ski, the ski will push you upwards at the end of the turn. The sliding out to each side is not something I've heard of... I think it may be an exercise he is suggesting, rather than the way to do it?

  • Let me try this out tomorrow. It makes sense.

  • Great tip, thanks. One question, I am not disagreeing, I've been told to eliminate the up and down motion, but when it seems like there's still a lot of up and down movements

  • Very helpful! I've been looking for a starter technique to help with quick turns and will try this out on the slopes this week.

    Thanks!

  • Thank you for posting these....great tips

  • thanks great

  • it looks very gay

  • Lasse,

Don't pay attention to the haters! The last guy, Mortalg79, has 10 of your videos bookmarked on his page. Thanks for your work in putting these instructional videos up for the rest of us. Old school, new school, middleschool, who cares as long as it works and you have fun. Keep up the good work.

  • What are you talking about??? If you would take a closer look at the skis, you could see exactly that he has carving skis, perhaps even Slalom Carvers, because of his high position on the skis. And please explain me how you carve through five meter thin slopes with ski radiuses about 15 to 20 meters??

Please think the next time before you write!!

  • Actually he is not carving he sliding and radius has nothing to do when u talk about sliding

Also flexibility of your ski can affect the radius.

  • This is an awfully narrow, old-school stance, eh? Sorry, but I can't watch the rest of this verrrrrrrry booooooring clip.

  • This vid is outdated indeed, however don't make the mistake thinking wide stance skiing is all there is. Mogul skiing for example still asks for a very narrow stance. Furthermore it can be an indispensable all-moutain technique when venturing off-piste. Have a look at Patrick Deneen and see what a modern short turn can look like (especially on the groomers at 11secs and 1.07) watch?v=cGCtKB1wYPA

  • These videos make skiing boring.

  • this must be very old, today's ski's are totally different so this isn't really relevant anymore. nice trousers though :P

  • Some fo these guys would not pass their ISTD with demos like this.

  • This must be an old film. I think it was made about 8 - 10 yrs ago - even then the approach was outdated. These short radius turn descriptions are really inaccurate and not much help to anyone. Nice trousers though !

  • VEry good..balance with ur body

    is very important..
