  • definitely making these as soon as I possibly can

  • Seconding what mherron2004 just said. I tried this and ruined a pair of pants (fortunately not one I cared much about): There was a lot of bleedthrough. I also suggest spraying on lightly, then adding a second coat after it dries if desired. You might also want to put wax paper inside the pants before spraying as well, to prevent paint bleeding through to the other side if you spray it on too heavily.

Btw for thinner lines, masking tape might work just as well, though I haven't tried it.

  • wow thanks thats a great idea!!

  • Try going the other way. Take black pants, tape them off and spray water/bleach on them to the desired color.

  • @mherron2004 Just be careful of bleed if you're wanting crisp lines. My advice would be to spray lightly then let dry, and repeat as needed. Less of an issue with the paint as it's thick enough to do very little bleeding under the tape.

  • Are these machine washable?

  • Now for that sweet coat you wrere wearing.

  • I feel dumb. How easy was that?

  • "This is your cap'n speaking..."

    ^^

  • thats bad fo your skin, how about black dye mixed with water in a sprits bottle? better for skin

  • what kind of material are the pants? jeans?

  • So, it's been a while since you've done those pants. How do they look now, in terms of fading, etc? I want to do a pair a bit like those myself, and this looks like a smart and easy way to do it, if it lasts :)

  • Can you use this technique on leggings or is it better to use it on a pair of sturdier pants?

  • @ThatChickwithSigns You probably could, just don't coat the paint on super thick.

  • Wow its like pin stripe Tie Die XD Awesome. all i need now is some gaiters

  • My wife said I could do this to my pants but only if I "promise to look as hot in them." LOL

  • How do these hold up to being washed, I wonder?

  • @PinkKatfur I hear they hold up very well.

  • Captain Robert, your voice makes 'Rustoleum Painter's Touch' sound grand and High-end. Love.

  • so u design and make most of ur clohting and props?

  • Those pants are awesome. Gotta use that technique some time.

  • dude you should make a tuterail on how to make the jacket xD

  • I've now done this to about 5 pairs. Worked perfectly each time...whereing a pair now.

  • Well. I ruined my pants now. :/

  • to*

  • Those are wicked cool. I have some jeans I'll add some stripes too. Two pairs maybe!

  • that is awesome XD

  • very creative indeed

  • how wonderfully simple. how about your jacket? that looks like what used to be a red balls on fire thing, all torn up with some new patches? i could do that!

  • Adorable. I will make myself a pair of these.

    You're awesome :D

  • That's AMAZING! I am totally trying this out! THANKS AND KEEP UP THE AMAZING MUSIC!

  • nice pants for next vid could you do a jacket or boots? I'd like to see a duster type jacket or something similar to the french highway man's coat, like the one in the movie Brotherhood of the Wolf. I had an idea to make one with large leather scraps I had gotten and stich them all together to make a floor length coat with a large hood, but I am no tailor.

  • Uh oh, now I have to try this! They look great!

  • Genius. that is why you are captain.

  • Just finished a pair today, took me one evening and they look awesome, Now I'm thinking of playing with the tape on another pair and doing cogs.

  • After seeing that Captain Robert...It makes me want to make my own and wear them to work

  • Good job Captain!

  • I suppose you just wash the heck out of them to get the paint to soften up a bit after they dried?

  • If you have a little time to devote to the project, I recommend brushing on acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium. That way, you can wash the pants without the paint coming off...

  • Thank you for the wonderful vid, Cap'n. I owe you a beer for this one...

  • Absolutely fantastic, such a simple idea that now leads to so many thoughts. Thank you Thank you. I like the others do hope to see more DIY, but would much rather have more of your fantastic music.

  • Really cool. Of course I am already plotting alternative designs, I am nuts like that, but yours look awesome. Thanks so much for the ideas and please keep the music coming. There are never enough Abney Park cds out there.

  • Thanks Captain!

  • Even Captain Robert goes to Target. *dies in a horribly gory fangirl fashion* Oh, and: PARKING METER!!

  • You can also do the same with dark pants and a spray bottle full of bleach.

  • That's awesome

  • oh! I'm gonna have to try this! but I'm probably going to make smaller stripes though

  • I would have made smaller stripes, but that's the only tape i had. :P

  • @abneypark hmmm... maybe you could try cutting the tape in half next time, captain? that's what I was going to do and I bet if you just cut a wide piece of tape in half it'll look fine... I'm probably going to use duct tape (because that's all I have) so hopefully it'll have little uneven edges where I ripped it to make them look cooler

  • @abneypark That was awesome! ^^ I'm going to have to try that some time 8D Haha! 10 dollar pants and spray paint You spend less on your outfit then the other steampunk participators do xD

  • @abneypark u prbly coulda cut the painters tape in half or thinner.

  • Captain, thanks for the tip in the email. Looks great. So much cooler that you even did it yourself!!

  • These are very cool steampunk pants. I would have the same concerns as lacewinglml though, the spray paint I think would be a might brittle for fabric use. Perhaps dye or a less runny option of textile paint.

  • Its really cool that you make your own stuff.

  • yeah, more diy stuff would be awesome........

  • Awesome! Gonna do this, for sure!

You should upload more DIY stuff :D

  • Hmmmm I might give this a go my own self.

  • That looks pretty fab. I'd love to try this on knickerbockers!

  • That's great, the result was much better than I would've ever thought. I think this will be one of my DIY projects for 2010:)

  • Sweet! I love those trousers!

  • They look awesome!!

  • I have to say, I might try this myself, although likely instead of using paint I would likely use dye.. so I can wash it.

Unless it washes without the paint flaking off?

  • Brilliant!

  • Captain, that is awesome. I'm going to try this really soon--as soon as I find some paint and a tarp, actually. More DIY stuff would be doubleplusgood.

  • I am totally going to try this..

  • That's pretty cool! I would love a pair of pants like those. :) & it looks easy.

  • That is genius! Thanks for this video Capt. Robert, I think I might actually do these. =D

  • nope, they on't smell like anything, and so far they've survived several washings and have not flaked of peeled off.

Paint and "printing ink" are not that much different. We have A LOT of shirts printed.

  • @abneypark ah-ha! please Captain Robert! More DIY ideas please =D pehaps how that lovely jacket was made? I love you style and really need to get back into sewing again D=

  • the tail-coat vest? Um, yeah, that one is not so DIY. me and a designer sketched out ideas for a month, then she sew that...then altered it, then I altered it, etc.

I AM getting ready to make myself a burnt-blazer similar to the one we made for Kristina in the G4 show, maybe I will film that process: take one cheap blazer, burnt whole, repeat.

  • Won't the paint crack and flake off?

  • They must smell bad, though. Good job on the looks!
