  • Wonderful performance! Pat Metheny 's sound is beautiful. Sweet and Painful too!! The "outro " is little bit funny 9:11 it reminds me a Nirvana song... hm.. the 90's ... maybe the Nevermind had an effect on him.. but who knows ... :)))

  • I am a Big Pat Methany fan and Steve Rodby is one of my Bass Heros! Awesome to hear Steve and Pat play together like this! Love the Solos! Awesome stuff here! Very enjoyable, indeed!!!

  • @loksinsan I totally agree with you brother.I miss the old school players like Martino,Benson,Wes,Johhny Smith,etc..There was a certain magic, and as you say, intensity and energy, and i would add, a certain melodic approach that seems to be terribly lacking in new school guys. And I also agree with you that players like Bireli,Luc, Andreas O'berg etc, seem to be the only guys around that have that old school magic.Dam those gypsy guys.Django created a lineage of guitar monsters

  • Very nice..But doesn't knock me out in the way Wes or Pat Martino do when they solo over this tune..I don't know what it is with the "new breed" of jazz guitar players.,and when i say new breed,i mean post 1990's.They just don't seem to have the same intensity and give me goose bumps when they play. The exceptions are the gypsy guys like Bireli Lagrene,Sylvain Luc and others. It's hard to go back and listen to people like metheny, rosenwinkle etc..They all suddenly sound boring in comparison

  • Best live performance ever, IMHO. I've listened to this video end-to-end probably about 190 times, realistically, and I cannot get sick of it.

  • cant beat wes mann.. just cant! not even with all that expression :/

  • One of the best solos ever. I've listen to this for more then 200 times i think, and i still love it. Its like a very good whiskey...mmm

  • CHULADA DE MELODIA =D

  • i want the transcription for this

  • I love MediaOutletOnline for getting fffreeee m..uzzic such as this. You should try and search it on Bing.

  • great work man....thanks

  • Such a wonderful guitarist, no one could have ever written and/or created something like this, only Pat.

  • Such a wonderful player, no one could have created and/or written this, just Pat.

  • @pako18drum

tom jobim created it like 30 years ago buddy ..pat and steve just reinterpretated

  • the bit from 8:32 ruined the whole thing ;)

  • @goodresonance tension and release my brother.

  • @goodresonance I can see where you are coming from. If you listen to it though, the whole groove changes and if it was more apparent it would sound a lot more appropriate. Just gotta open your ears

  • God.... that groove from 3:42.... That was beautifulll!!!!!! This version is a milestone!!!! It's unbelievable!!!

  • @2:51-2:59 Man...he wrapped that line up with a heavy dose of teh secksy...jesus

  • As a player of the double bass, I cannot get around Steve, never. He is inventive, groovy, and an easy listen all at the same time. The perfect match for Pat, who can basically play anything he wants, and still sound like him.

  • Beautiful... beautiful... beautiful...

  • What a great tune. Pat's soloing is beautiful. I run out of energy and ideas after only 1 or 2 choruses.

  • Exactl, a myrriad is 10 thousand, and if there are as many chords,Pat Metheny can find a proper use for them I am sure. That said Pat is one of the "rockiest" guitar players out there, irrespective of genre.I consider Road to U one of the most rocking live guitar playing ever

  • @jhngr I mean Road to You as in the the whole album

  • Jazz is not for those who want to hear.

Jazz is for those who can feel.

  • 8:25 is absolute rape...

  • @ColinResponseTO line at 7:43

  • Pat is simply the best!

  • Pat is simply the best!

  • Hi, i trascribed the second chorus of Pat's first solo, if someone is interested to study it, write me: gabrielejazz@libero.it. i send it for free.

  • @gabrielejazz Could you send me that please?

  • @gabrielejazz I want it, but I can't send the email to you, don't know why!

  • Comment removed

  • @gabrielejazz You'd learn more if you transcribed if yourself.

  • @geoffreyefloyd I AGREE :-)

  • @gabrielejazz hi gab, could you send me your trascribrion? thanks so much

  • Thinkin' takes time alas. No matter where you are.

  • Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico's new band - Marbin

  • Dam, this is a great jazz video, only thing missing is my favorite part, the intro (to insensitive)

It's the only part I could learn to play by brute force repetition, I think I wore out the tape (VHS) trying to learn it. I can still play it today.

  • Mmmm. Goood. I love life.

  • my guitaris,good good good

  • Brasil, sil sil...

  • lol 13 people are insensitive

  • 13 morons are lost

  • Great!

  • such great technical dynamics too. good touch

  • Master of Arts, Pat!

  • is this a Laser Disc?

  • What's the difference between a rock guitarist and a jazz guitarist?

A rock guitarist plays three chords to thousands of people......

  • @FreindlyRanger Sadly.

  • @FreindlyRanger

    That's just garbage. no offense.

Guys like Guthrie Govan, Frank Gambale, Steve Vai and Planet X are examples of Rock musicians who produce more complex harmonic structures than manny jazz cats. Also rock is divided into many sub-genres where more or less complex harmonies are implied. Jimmy Page can even be credited great harmonies. Many 3 chord players captivate and create legions of followers and social change, unlike metheny and many others. Different values and purposes.

  • @fcmaster. Well get you, taking a joke all serious an' all. Woo, you'd wanna take a settler.

Now that you've finished with me, my grandma wants to know if you'll teach her how to suck eggs.

  • @fcmaster

they are popular because the masses are asses when it comes to appreciating esoteric jazz as PM plays...i don't take anything away from great rock guitarists but they couldn't put a patch on PMs cheek for virtuosity, composition, rhythm, and abilities.

  • @FreindlyRanger

HAHAHAA....that really made me laugh :)...

  • @FreindlyRanger I take it jazz guitarist plays a myriad of chords to three people. Simply put, pop music aims at maximum profit with simplest means possible.

  • @CerebralBeing. Yeah, but I said Rock. Rock guitarist.

Oh and did you know that 'Myriad' is the Babylonian word for 'Million'. I'm not sure if that's true but I read it somewhere so I'm going with it. The original comment, though, that was just a joke. If you want to maximise profit, put a rap in the middle of it.

  • @FreindlyRanger in fact first form of the word is found written in Greek at the Kyrou Anavasis, written by Xenofon.it's a story about Greek soldiers who try to return back to their homelands after selling their fighting experience to Kyros of Persia in order to fight against his brother Artaxerxis for the throne of Persia.

Pat is one of the modern jazz giants, and Rodby aids him to even greater heights

  • @jhngr. Wow, well that's me told. Turns out it means one hundred hundred, or ten thousand in ordinary parlance. I don't think there are ten thousand chords but there might as well be for all I can play. Still, I'm getting great mileage from that little joke.

  • @FreindlyRanger What you've said is true... but due to intelligence never been a mass distinction.

  • @gsnett what you meen?

  • @FreindlyRanger your sentence is partly true, yngwie malmsteen, paul gilbert, steve vai they are all rock guitarists but they don't play only three chords

  • @Footballzeal . Yeah, but they could if they wanted to. I don't know what that means.

  • @FreindlyRanger

And a jazz guitarist plays thousands of chords to three people :-)

  • @FreindlyRanger gaaaaaaaaaaaaaan : WRONG

  • @FreindlyRanger and the jazz guitarist play thousands of chords for 3 people

  • Maann!!i'm a Great Fan of Rock and Prog Bands like "Metallica,Dream Theater.." but when i saw Metheny playing i said "This is The Music" This Man is The incarnation of Music.

  • Excellent musicians!

  • incomparable Pat

  • Pat Metheny is great. Been listening to him for years...and every time I see him playing a solo I just want to run onstage and hand him some Exlax. That facial expression !

  • Pat metheny MONSTRUO

  • beautiful!

  • Jobim was a genius. I remember seeing PM at Red Rocks Amphitheater some years back and he played this in tribute in Jobim who had just passed away. Beautiful.

  • 2:32 to 3:00 blew my mind

  • Pat with a Vuvuzela button!!!!

  • @CJ81 That is too funny ...

  • The Best Live

  • One of the best songs ever

  • killer shirt pat!

  • gisbson sounds better

  • Damn! when i play this song, i sound nowhere near as good as that.

  • I pray that Pat doesn't end up looking like Richard Simmons...I love the guy's music, but it may be time to modify the look since there is becoming an increasingly frightening resemblance!

  • Aina kun mä kuuntelen Pat Methenyä, mulle tulee aivan käsittämättömän hyvä olo, sillai ku ois paratiisissa; ei tarviis huolehtia mistään, vois vaan nauttia P.M:stä ja olla. Monasti myös P.M:nyn musiikki herkistää ihan kyyneliin.. !!!!

  • Ciao Pat !!! qualcosa di magnifico!!un caro saluto da Alberto...

  • artyzm, piekno, głębia..Pat potrafi oddac wszystki emocjew doskonaly, subtelny sposob...

  • @koliberek3

Dopoki nie wydaje płyty z grającymi robocikami (Orchestrion) to tak :P

A tak na poważnie - to geniusz

  • I've never noticed it before, but Pat Metheney kind of looks like the ultimate warrior...

only y'know... talented and not totally insane

  • Simply awesome! I've heard Pat play this song in numerous settings on various occasions and he literally re-invents it every time. Steve Rodby plays the most melodic bass solo on the planet, too!

  • From God gifted musician!

  • Wow nice ! listen to the version of Bireli Lagrene, one of the best...

  • did steve rodby yawn at 2:00? or is that a moan?

  • OMFG.. This is simply awesome.

  • What a spectacular performance...!!!!

  • I never heard Steve Rodby take a solo before.

  • i was listening to it while i was so tired and the song was dreamy like, amazing

  • Im not a metheny fan, im a kenny burrell and howard alden fan, but this solo was great. His hair in the blue light looks hillarious.

  • haha

  • his hair is always hilarious bro.

  • Pat's ideas are just endless. such taste and masterful phrasing

  • Mesmerizing ... so beautiful, my hair is standing ....

  • Sergej, thank you very much Brother! It's amazing and full of harmony...

  • have not words to describe this

    awsome

    beautiful

    perfect

    superb

    who knows

  • Comment removed

  • this was a breathtaking performance by Pat. he is a treasure.

  • could never figure out why Pat played with Rodby for so long, as one can tell in this solo, his cops are not really on par with the greater community of double bassists in the jazz world!

I just wish Meth was still rocking with Larry Grenadier!

  • Crystal, Crystal Pat,

  • An absolutey brilliant performance by one of the most talented people alive. Pat Matheny is fantastic in the Jobin masterpeice!

  • relly relly beutiful

  • very nice!

    excelente

    manifique!

  • Super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no words. Think like the improvisor. Thanks to the great mind in this world. Alexei

  • I have an L-5 and it sounds great, although it certainly would sound better in Pat's hands. The cutaway of the L-5 is more rounded than that of the ES-175.

  • Not to be rude, but that is not an L-5. It is a 1 pickup Gibson ES-!75. That was his main guitar for many, many years, before his current Ibanez signature guitar aged enough for constant use. Don't mean to be a smart a--, just being informative.

  • Are you sure thats not an L-4 ? I was thinking the tail piece was that of an L-4 I think they are pretty much the same dimension as the 175 but with a solid arch top instead of a laminate. I really don't know just wondering. Pat could have a shoe box with rubber bands and it would sound incredible in his hands. Any one notice the nod to "what do you get when you fall in love" at the last few seconds of the tune ?

  • Such a timeless song....

  • pat metheny....the most beautiful music i've ever heard

  • thanks for posting!

  • That reverb on the L-5 is giving me chills. It's very impressive. I want one right now.

  • I think this is his best version for Insensatez. After Rodby's improvise, Metheny's arpegios are flowing more than ever...

  • well said johnsoncm65

  • Cristal sound,cristal melody

  • damn right, pascal. he's all natural.

  • Pat is simply the BEST melodic improviser on guitar. No question about that, although I'm french and I love Sylvain LUC, who is the best guitarist in the world.

  • sounds like They abandon the Form for Pat's Second Fiery solo,.Good Vamp-age by Steve !!

  • Jazz is now a small niche in American culture because it doesn't deliver instant gratification. You have to learn to appreciate jazz over a period of time. This does not sit well with a culture that is virtually defined by Attention Deficit Disorder. Jazz lovers are those few who are patient and know that all great things take time to make and to appreciate.

  • Agreed. Totally.

  • Beautifully said!

  • After playing jazz for a living almost 40 years now and having played with Diz, McCoy, Gary, Richie, Attila, Joe Beck, etc......I agree with you wholeheartedly but sadly.......check my videos or don't......

  • Agree (from the land of KPLU Jazz). When I first heard Bitches Brew I thought jeez this must be great because I can't figure out how to hear it right. It took time to let go and hear what was happening. It is like any other relationship. Time deepens the experience.

  • Well well said

  • Im an heavy metal guy, but I love classic music and jazz also, I take a lot of ideas form these 2 genres. I watched this video by accident and all I can say is OMFG!!!!!!

This guy is beyond brilliant these phrasing on the guitar is atonishing

  • @johnsoncm65 I don't think you have to 'learn' to appreciate Jazz. There is not now nor has it ever been a big music market because it is not visual. There is no sexy Elvis, no cute "which one do you like?" Beatles, No kick-ass rockers like Mick and the Stones, There are no videos with half-naked 19 year olds jumping up and down. No catchy lyrics with catchy bridges,"To the left, to the left". Jazz is brain music for the soul.I liked Jazz since i can remember. Maybe as young as 5.

  • @johnsoncm65 Yes, what you said is partly correct. But jazz is not now nor has it ever been a big music market. It's not visual. There's no sexy swivelin' hips Elvis, There is no "which one do you think is the cutest" Beatles, No one smokin' weed (in the videos anyway), No naked 19 year olds dancin' to "I like Big Butts and I cannot lie", no catchy lyrics or 'lets all singalong bridges. Jazz is Brain food for the soul. And how many of us out there have brains?

  • @early60srcool I have played music to Mongoloid kids, they are wrapped, paying 100% attention, didn't miss a beat ,; I deliberately played a wrong note, they frowned at me. They actually as 10 year olds conducted the band. in time.

  • @johnsoncm65 I agree to an extent. I think it's indulgent for many so called 'artists' to expect us to enjoy their learning of II V !s.. That's called practice. But PM transcends that.... I love his playing and tunes... Except Song-X but that's cool too that he can do that stuff. All hail Pat

  • I can just feel the tone in my teeth! lol.

  • Killin' it!

  • What a great tone!

  • Super - thanks for yet one more blessing PMG. Life begins at 7:50 - for me!! haha

  • amazing...too bad the uploader missed the intro...the harmony was dripping with texture...gotta get the DVD again i lost over the years....the hunt begins!

  • I've listen to this perfomance hundreds of times and....well, that's Pat! The greatest one!

  • simply wonderful !!!

in which dvd i can find this video please, i'd like to buy it...

    Thanks !

  • You can find it easily on E-bay, just type: "Secret Story DVD"

It costs like 12 USD with shipping from the far-east.

And it's not pirate, it's an official release, but for some uncomprehended reason, only available in that region.

    So, the DVD :

    Title:

    Pat Metheny Group

    Secret Story DVD

Recorded Live In New Brunswick NJ 11/24/1992

  • Wow, I've never seen Steve Rodby improvise before. He's great. Wow again!

  • it´s so...........like a breeze!!!! simply wonderful!!

  • hey man im 15 and i love pat metheny. Eric Clapton, Andy Mckee

  • caraaaaaaa!!!

  • Why doesn't today's youth listen to this... Why oh why?

  • I'm 23 and I love it. I got turned on to PM; I've been listening to PM for a few years now.

  • I was referring to teenagers like me :P

But cool anyway. I found out about him from my Latin teacher xD

  • check out allan holdsworth ; i.o.u., or allan with chad wackerman, he's equally incredible to me

  • im am 16 and love this music

  • not suprised, when i was young suddenly this music just hit me right in my face , iI was so suprised and forever in love! ;)

  • Excellent! You are on the right path!

  • some do. but jazz is now a small niche in american culture. sad but true.

  • MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!

  • how could anyone else possibly play this tune after this.....?

  • Man is brilliant. Doesn't need Jopek. Lyle Mays, however, is a WHOLE 'nother story!

    As is Rodby!

  • Good playing. Pat always looks like he just got a squirt of lemon in his eyes. haha :)

  • Comment removed

  • Oh man! This piece is so relaxing. I could just lie in a hammock on some desert island and watch the shooting stars and the moon slide down till dawn. Real cool Pat

  • The interval jumping in the middle of the second solo is DAUNTING no doubt! Two questions: Is that Paul Wertico on drums? & People were mentioning this a Gibson 175. I thuoght it was Pat's signature Ibanez. Why was he using a 175?

  • He used that guitar from the 1970's (or before) until it was nearly falling apart. Then he had to retire it and started using his Ibenez signature model. This is an old video.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah it's his old ES 175...if you look closely you'll see a toothbrush holding the tailpiece in place. Yeah i think it is Wertico...hard to make out though.
