I totally agree with you, I'm brazilian and as I have said in other videos, my greatgrandfather fought in Italy, first as a volunteer, then with our expeditionary force. To me EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY that fought against the axis powers has as many credit as USA or Russia, UK. My country send some 35,000 men to the frontlines, and suffered less than 1,000 deaths, of a total of i think 5,000 casualties. I think this means that we were more eficient than many other allied countries :/

Treaty of Versailles blamed Germany for WW1, but they didnt start it. The treaty was a result of English and French FEAR.

The outcome of a war is usually decided by which side makes the biggest mistakes and the timing of those mistakes - so it was with WW2.
Both sides made plenty. The biggest was Japan's decision to attack Pearl Harbour. Had they joined with Germany in attacking Russia it is highly likely that Russia would have fallen. America would have stayed neutral and Britain would have become an isolated nation, as it's colonies were taken by the Axis one by one, without the resources to continue the war.

Russia did have huge production capacity and in a prolonged struggle it would (and did) prove to be decisive. But Germany's strategy in WW2 was about mobility and rapid advances. In the first few months of Barbarossa the Germany army cut the Russians to pieces and swallowed up huge chunks of Russia. Their Army Group Centre was within striking distance of Moscow and might well have taken it. But Hitler (against the advice of his Generals) ordered them to strike Kiev instead.
When Hitler finally agreed to strike Moscow, the army was exhausted and depleted yet they still got to within 12 miles of Moscow. But with the onset of Winter the campaign ceased to be a lightning strike and became a test of endurance. This was always going to favour the Russians.
Without Hitler's error Germany may well have taken Russia on its own. With Japan creating a 2nd front it would be hard for Russia to have prevailed. (just my opinioin)

You're right about Hitler and I agree that they were never going to win the war itself. But with different strategy and tactics I think they could have defeated Russia. If they had concentrated their forces into a single thrust (rather than 3) and gone straight for Moscow they would surely have taken it within a few months. Although Russia had a more than 2 to 1 advantage in manpower, in open fighting the Germans inflicted a casualty rate much higher than this.

Japan was defeated MAINLY by Chinese armies. (Both nationalists and communists). Japan had almost ALL of their resources and troops in the battles in China.
The USA waited so long before entering the war and pick their battles against enemies that were half defeated already.

@LumanoidAU The Russians did indeed take the brunt of the fighting. But it was American industry which kept their offensives going. It wasn't the tanks, or planes, or ammunition that we sent them that made the difference. It was the trucks. Even Stalin said that they couldn't have kept up the attack without the trucks from the US. So the irony is that it may not have been our military that won the war, but our manufacturing.
@Naiant Our manufacturing helped. It did not win the war. doing 90% of the work and being helped by 10% does not mean that that 10% actually won it. The Russians should have way more credit than they actually do. They fought the most time, they had the most casualties and they fought in the worst conditions.The US got there very late in the war.

Russia recieved supplies from America after Stalingrad(Which was where Hitler's forces went when he couldn't take Moscow) where the Russians trapped 250.000 german troops, all were killed or captured.and then there was Kursk. But let's keep it short, Russia pretty much forced Germany to go on the defensive. So in others words America helped Russia AFTER they turned the tide. Hitler killed himself because the russians were closing in on Berlin, the russians surrounded Germany, whilst the Americans were back further towards France. I definitely agree that America helped with the war, but so did many other countries that all deserve EQUAL credit, such as my own country Australia. Most of our defence force left our country which left it more open to the Japanese because we were thrown into the war to protect the U.K.
And let us not forget Albert Einstein, considered one of the most intelligent people in history. He was a German Jew who fled Nazi Germany to the U.S. before they removed the Jews from their country. By 1943 the axis forces were crushed britain/America had taken Africa/Italy and the Russia had destroyed the axis forces in the russian front and the Americans in the east were on the full advance! Not exactly...Russia was in no condition to wage war with Germany. Had Hitler he wanted to be ally's with Russia, Russia would have accepted graciously, and the world would be very different place today... Hitler's decision to attack Russia was the reason Germany was defeated.
@chaseman12 Russia only survived to fight because of massive amounts of US millitary aid, food, and machinery & supplies for heavy industry. They would have had to surrender by early 1943 otherwise. This is why Stalin was so desperate for an invasion of France in '43. When the Brits and US decided on an Italian campaign, they could only calm him down by offering even more of this aid to keep them going another year. The soliders of the USSR would have starved to death long before 1945.

I always wondered why it is mostly black and white footage that is shown on TV or in history books, when there's so much color material. It makes you realize this stuff happened just 70 years ago. And it makes you realize that there was not much difference between these poor guys back then and yourself noways.
It opens your eyes to see all this in color instead of the black and white. It is a horrifying image, to imagine this all has happened less than 100 years ago. What were people thinking back then?! Despite being an American, I find all of WWII to be an overwhelming story, and I feel remarkable passion for the Europeans who fought to defy the Nazi injustice not so long ago...Praise Science we live in this time!

There are also many tragedies that have occurred that received even less air time than the areas you mentioned - I'm thinking particularly of the invasion of East Timor by Indonesia, for example, where a quarter of a million civilians died.

I totally agree with you, I'm brazilian and as I have said in other videos, my greatgrandfather fought in Italy, first as a volunteer, then with our expeditionary force. To me EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY that fought against the axis powers has as many credit as USA or Russia, UK. My country send some 35,000 men to the frontlines, and suffered less than 1,000 deaths, of a total of i think 5,000 casualties. I think this means that we were more eficient than many other allied countries :/

The outcome of a war is usually decided by which side makes the biggest mistakes and the timing of those mistakes - so it was with WW2.
Both sides made plenty. The biggest was Japan's decision to attack Pearl Harbour. Had they joined with Germany in attacking Russia it is highly likely that Russia would have fallen. America would have stayed neutral and Britain would have become an isolated nation, as it's colonies were taken by the Axis one by one, without the resources to continue the war.

Russia did have huge production capacity and in a prolonged struggle it would (and did) prove to be decisive. But Germany's strategy in WW2 was about mobility and rapid advances. In the first few months of Barbarossa the Germany army cut the Russians to pieces and swallowed up huge chunks of Russia. Their Army Group Centre was within striking distance of Moscow and might well have taken it. But Hitler (against the advice of his Generals) ordered them to strike Kiev instead.

When Hitler finally agreed to strike Moscow, the army was exhausted and depleted yet they still got to within 12 miles of Moscow. But with the onset of Winter the campaign ceased to be a lightning strike and became a test of endurance. This was always going to favour the Russians.
Without Hitler's error Germany may well have taken Russia on its own. With Japan creating a 2nd front it would be hard for Russia to have prevailed. (just my opinioin)

You're right about Hitler and I agree that they were never going to win the war itself. But with different strategy and tactics I think they could have defeated Russia. If they had concentrated their forces into a single thrust (rather than 3) and gone straight for Moscow they would surely have taken it within a few months. Although Russia had a more than 2 to 1 advantage in manpower, in open fighting the Germans inflicted a casualty rate much higher than this.

The USA waited so long before entering the war and pick their battles against enemies that were half defeated already.

I did not say America had "No" involvement in the war, I just said they had pretty much equal involvement with many other countries. Such as my own, Australia. This is only regarding Europe. As far as Japan goes, yes America did a lot on that side. But for Europe, Russia gets the prize.

@LumanoidAU The Russians did indeed take the brunt of the fighting. But it was American industry which kept their offensives going. It wasn't the tanks, or planes, or ammunition that we sent them that made the difference. It was the trucks. Even Stalin said that they couldn't have kept up the attack without the trucks from the US. So the irony is that it may not have been our military that won the war, but our manufacturing.

@Naiant Our manufacturing helped. It did not win the war. doing 90% of the work and being helped by 10% does not mean that that 10% actually won it. The Russians should have way more credit than they actually do. They fought the most time, they had the most casualties and they fought in the worst conditions.The US got there very late in the war.

Yes Russia did recieve supplies from America.
Russia recieved supplies from America after Stalingrad(Which was where Hitler's forces went when he couldn't take Moscow) where the Russians trapped 250.000 german troops, all were killed or captured.and then there was Kursk. But let's keep it short, Russia pretty much forced Germany to go on the defensive. So in others words America helped Russia AFTER they turned the tide. Combined efforts won the war, show some respect to the dead you ass.

Hitler killed himself because the russians were closing in on Berlin, the russians surrounded Germany, whilst the Americans were back further towards France. I definitely agree that America helped with the war, but so did many other countries that all deserve EQUAL credit, such as my own country Australia. Most of our defence force left our country which left it more open to the Japanese because we were thrown into the war to protect the U.K.

(Could be slightly off there its been a while since I read his diary) And you know something? To say any one nations has or had the best army is also stupid. People are people and every nation will have it's fair share of hero's; people prepared to fight to the death with the incentive to do so. If you're talking about technological sophistication that would be different, however there are other nations who's cutting edge military technology defined their era of history. Tactics also define the success of an army and Germany's failed. Britain controlled more of the world than anyone.

The two top comments are absolute tosh. The USA would have defeated Germany as a result of it's much larger population and industrial output. It was by 1939 an economic superpower. The allies mentioned had minimal influence on the German war machine and the USA only developed the Atomic bomb from captured Nazi scientists after Germany's defeat. It's amusing how Stalin didn't listen to his advisers about the imminent German invasion until it actually happened...If the Russian winter which stopped Napoleon hadn't happened to Hitler as well, Hitler would have taken all three of his original targets with ease (Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev). Too bad Hitler didn't realize how large Russia is, and invaded too late in the year....

my grandfather fought in russia ,he said the biggest enemy was the cold russian winter. hitler thought they could conquer russia before the winter will begin, therefore a lot of soldiers died because they were not properly dressed for the situation. under different circumstances germany maybe had win the battle against russia ;-). i hate war and im against racism,nerverheless its our history and its interesting to see how people handle their lives in those days.

The US was too late if you ask me. Britain was the only goddamn ally left by the time US entered the war. And it would be months before we actually declared war on Germany.
All in all, human existence is incredibly lucky that the atomic bomb wasn't invented just a few years earlier.. It's sickening to think what the nazis would have done with it.

By 1943 the axis forces were crushed britain/America had taken Africa/Italy and the Russia had destroyed the axis forces in the russian front and the Americans in the east were on the full advance! But it was all allies victor both in west and east all sides HELPED!

Not exactly...Russia was in no condition to wage war with Germany. Had Hitler he wanted to be ally's with Russia, Russia would have accepted graciously, and the world would be very different place today... Hitler's decision to attack Russia was the reason Germany was defeated.

@chaseman12 Russia only survived to fight because of massive amounts of US millitary aid, food, and machinery & supplies for heavy industry. They would have had to surrender by early 1943 otherwise. This is why Stalin was so desperate for an invasion of France in '43. When the Brits and US decided on an Italian campaign, they could only calm him down by offering even more of this aid to keep them going another year. The soliders of the USSR would have starved to death long before 1945.

The guy who wrote the letter read at 2:30 should have been beaten, then had 5 needles stabbed under every single nail on his hands and feet, then after a few hours, cut off one finger every hour, then same with toes, and then have his arms broken at the elbows and legs broken at the knees, and thrown into a giant empty pot which is being heated from underneath and left to fry for days. The things he had said and probably done as well deserve such a punishment.

I always wondered why it is mostly black and white footage that is shown on TV or in history books, when there's so much color material. It makes you realize this stuff happened just 70 years ago. And it makes you realize that there was not much difference between these poor guys back then and yourself noways.

It opens your eyes to see all this in color instead of the black and white. It is a horrifying image, to imagine this all has happened less than 100 years ago. What were people thinking back then?! Despite being an American, I find all of WWII to be an overwhelming story, and I feel remarkable passion for the Europeans who fought to defy the Nazi injustice not so long ago...Praise Science we live in this time!
