I saw them perform in the early 70's, Heart was the opening band. The music of L & M has always stayed with me, and experiencing the spiritual feelings walking among the giant trees, living beings thousands of years old instantly recalled this song.
From the Isle of Man to Malta, this sea-like ditty be to those who endeavor to hold; oft times against those to whom they are beholden, our life and loves. Who bear against tried, bloodied, and covetous breast all of those thing we do so hold holy un- broken and unbreakable. The voyager, the warrior returning home only to keep for scant moments held close them they to whom he or bears tears for and guards against the night forever. Huzzah, and Amen.
I saw them do this on their farewell tour at Blossom Music Center. This song live was unbelieveable when done live. The instrumentals had such energy. I wore out three cassette copies of Finale back in the day LOL. I wish that album would be reissued so I could get a good live version of this song.
Breathtaking...simply breathtaking. I loved every single second of it. Best song I have heard in quite a while. It's a shame how things are going...Be Free.
i remember seeing them in the 70s at the mississippi river festival. i understand the band was going thru some changes, but they put on one great concert. perhaps the best i've seen maybe.
@izzzzzzzzzzie Yes, it was Messina's ranch and the whole album was recorded in the living room directly to a 48 track reel to reel. They had to keep doing retakes because the dog would bark or someone would flush a tiolet. LOL No fancy mixers or anything here. Straight into the recorder! This song speaks to the great talent and genius of these men.
Wow 36 years later and I can't believe I still remember the words to this song....the sort of stuff that sticks with you forever. I still have the album/vinyl too : )
one of my all time favs. takes me back to better days, the time of my life. i've been out of place since 1980. i do miss those days and people so much. I tracked down my best friend from those days on FB. What an asshole he's turned into. at least the music hasn't changed and abandoned me. So here i have been since 1980, the man in the moon, all alone.
Thank you for sharing this. I was lucky enough to see them in 1976 at the Celebrity In The Round Theater in Tempe AZ (or, was it Scottsdale,AZ...no difference really)
What happened to music? To pop music? I listen to the complexity and creativity behind this one cut and I find no modern equivalent. This music here was not synthetic. Those were actual instruments that created that sound. Sorry to rant, but I...sigh
Saw them in Cincinnatti a couple of years ago. Drove up from Nashville after work and was a little late. They, of course were awesome, The only dissappointment was that Jon Clarke was no longer with them. Sad to hear of his death.
I remember them performing this song live on stage in San Diego in their last tour as a duo while promoting their "Native Sons" album. It was as awesome as it is here, with mandolins, a soprano sax, their beautiful harmonic vocals, great key and tempo changes and perfect musicianship! Thank you for the great post in stereo and the fantastic accompanying photos! Aren't they great!
@JFinSD2 You are very observant! This song does transcend from a Middle Eastern feel into an almost Celtic dance or country dance music. Pure genius of Loggins and Messina,
I have always loved this song! I used to listen to it over and over again. Gorgeous photos, too! I had no idea that Loggins and Messina were performing together again until reading the comments just now. Wish i could see them in concert.
Loggins and Messina ROCKED the Santa Barbara Bowl last Saturday 10/03/09! Great to see George Hawkins play with them again....Like the good ol' days when they lived in Ojai. They were better than ever!
Fantastic Kenny Loggins & Jim Messina concert at Fraze (Kettering, OH) tonight. Spectacular light show. Excellent band played this song this evening. Great way to start the Labor Day weekend.
This was one of the theme songs of my youth. I eventually did run away to the rivers and trees of the Appalachian Trail for 6 months. I'll finally settle in the Eden of my youth in the near future, and Loggins & Messina will have a star in my hall of fame.
The first time, I was only concentrating on the song...now, I am seeing the photos. Amazing shots! They come out so naturally with every details that I can imagine myself walking/jogging in the forest. Whoever took these shots must be an excellent photographer.
Great song!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw them do this song in concert 1976 & also during their reunion tour a few year back.. I wish they would do another tour, but I don't think it will happen.
This is a fantastic song and they ars touring again!!! I have tickets to see them in Biloxi, MS in September....hope they will play some more places and you'll get to see them again.....I have never seen them together but have seen Kenny by himself a few times.... can't wait!!
Great song. Melody line, harmonies, chords, instrumental solos are excellent. Is there a Loggins and Messina box set? It would be worth the investment.
thanks for sharing...i had been searching this song for a long time, i still have the LP album record back in my hometown and i always play it when i´m there on vacation. the melody and the lyrics are beautiful.
What a great piece of music !! Thanks for the pictures as well !

One thing you can be assured of is the fact that you will enjoy yourself thoroughly.
Peace.

This song is like a dream for me.
33 years ago I heard this song and had a vision of living in the woods , with a long braid and hanging clothes and of course being free.
It actually happened.
This is a deep spiritual song for me.
Thank you for such a fantastic video.
