If Aidid wasn't threatened by the American/UN presence in Somalia during the civil war and actually thought the US recognized his ambitions to govern Somalia...he would have continued the same Somali-American partnership like the previous Siad Barre regime.

I don't think the Islamic courts existed in the early 90s. Islamic courts really made a mark in 2005 when they joined forces and defeated the reigning warlords in Mogadishu...their momentum was halted by the invasion of Ethiopia in 06 and the more extreme parts of Islamic courts decided to stay and fight on while the more moderate leaders escaped to neighboring African countries.
We were based in Baidoa in '93, inland and slightly north of Mogadishu. We got electricity re-established, a police force mobilised to work with us and the Islamic court we instigated, initiated immunisation programs, protected the wells so water was free and not extorted at gunpoint. Hunted bandits out of town. It was great to see people walking the streets and the markets at night. We were also in talks with the SLA (Somali Liberation Army) and other clan warlords. (See next post)

The thing is I actually liked Somalia and your average Somali's are great, friendly, resiliant people who are proud of their country and actually want to make it better. The country was in a civil war (and still is) and there was no functioning government , no police, and no professional soldiers so everyone had to defend for themselves. People belonging to specific clans have taken arms from unattended military garrisons and formed local/community militias.

After Somalia emerged out of colonialism it became quite divided among clan lines and in 69 a General named Mohammed Siad Barre took control and wanted to create a socialist state. A lot of opposition grew to him in the 70s and 80s and he was kicked out by a coalition of clans but once he was out, they started fighting amongst themselves for control and there was nation-wide violence between clans and pretty much the entire countries infrastructure was destroyed.
The population was suffering enormously, the war coupled with the drought made things quite bad. The UN made a commitment to provide humanitarian relief but the political efforts were unsuccessful. So there were a lot of clashes with the warlords and the UN peacekeepers, Pakistani and Malaysians were killed. The US led forces were brought into secure food shipments but the Army Rangers secretly stayed without UN consent to take out the current warlord in control Adid and then this happened.
The US after suffering losses coupled with public opinion domestically withdrew.

Their intention was good. I was there as part of the multinational force and we delivered more food aid and civic aid then you can imagine. I don't think the Islamic courts existed in the early 90s. Islamic courts really made a mark in 2005 when they joined forces and defeated the reigning warlords in Mogadishu...their momentum was halted by the invasion of Ethiopia in 06 and the more extreme parts of Islamic courts decided to stay and fight on while the more moderate leaders escaped to neighboring African countries.

We were based in Baidoa in '93, inland and slightly north of Mogadishu. We got electricity re-established, a police force mobilised to work with us and the Islamic court we instigated, initiated immunisation programs, protected the wells so water was free and not extorted at gunpoint. Hunted bandits out of town. It was great to see people walking the streets and the markets at night. We were also in talks with the SLA (Somali Liberation Army) and other clan warlords. (See next post)

@JediAub - Anyway long story short, we achieved a huge amount in the time we were there and even got a citation from the UN for the way we did our 'Peacekeeping'. The thing is I actually liked Somalia and your average Somali's are great, friendly, resiliant people who are proud of their country and actually want to make it better. Even when the 'gunfire' broke out and we had to sort out the bad elements - I can only wish the best for them in their endeavours. I was actually sad to leave.

The country was in a civil war (and still is) and there was no functioning government , no police, and no professional soldiers so everyone had to defend for themselves. People belonging to specific clans have taken arms from unattended military garrisons and formed local/community militias.

After Somalia emerged out of colonialism it became quite divided among clan lines and in 69 a General named Mohammed Siad Barre took control and wanted to create a socialist state. A lot of opposition grew to him in the 70s and 80s and he was kicked out by a coalition of clans but once he was out, they started fighting amongst themselves for control and there was nation-wide violence between clans and pretty much the entire countries infrastructure was destroyed.

In this case missions were done at night when tatics and force can yeld a quick vitory. But this one was a daylight in a bad area and the enemy developed tatics to take advantage of how they conducted raids
