One more thing you MUST realize is that the wolves are actually at a disadvantage due to their size. Their necks and bellies are exposed to the badgers teeth and you can see that with the male wolf not being able to get an upper hand and having to keep rolling.

What i find interesting is that it isn't just teeth and semi retractable claws that make the wolverine devastating. It has broad shoulders, strong arms and is very low to the ground. I wouldn't say that wolves are "cowards," they are just intelligent enough to know that a wolverine is an incredibly tough creature and it's not worth getting into a fight with one of them. Wolves have limited weaponry, just their teeth and jaws, but the wolverine has teeth and claws as weapons, giving them an edge over the wolf despite their smaller size. The honey badger of Africa is a distant relative and considered the most ferocious creature on that continent.

I wouldn't call the wolves cowards. Wolverines are fearsom creatures with the tenacity to back up their boasting. They have even been know to chase full grown adult grizzly bears up trees. In a world where if you get hurt your live could be drastically shortened the best response to a wolverine is get away. Could they beat one? There is a good chance yes. But is it worth the damage they may recieve? No. Making good survival choices, even if it means running away, is being wise, not a coward.

National Geographic has documentation of wolves killing bears on occasion yes, in large packs.

Wolf trackers, documenters, and biologist have found that particular wolf packs living in close proximity to wolverines have added them to their diet. (L. David. Mech reference point).

On a lone wolf journey to find another pack they can spend up to 5 years hunting alone. By relying on itself it becomes a more proficient hunter, and more ferocious by having to not rely on other members.

Depending on the history of the wolf pack a alpha can and does fight to the death.

If you know anything about A Wolf pack they are trained to kill the easy prey; the weak, the infant, the slow or old, due to the sheer amount of their daily intake. Even if a moose turns on them they dont bother with it because they need to preserve the energy for another 10 or so attacks a day. So they shrug it off and leave. So Yes the wolverine can easily scare of a bunch of betas in a wolf pack and hang on to the lip of what looked like a Timber Wolf Beta Minus.
