HI , everyone I am the lead singer of the 80's band TAPPS and I am pursuing my solo career now. My first dance single is gonna sound like this!!!!! this song rocks! '
Saw her and Alexander O'Neal in concert in 1988. They both put on a good show. When they can, they still sing together. She sung all of her hits at that time. If you like r'n'b then you will like the original by Cherelle better, if you like pop and the crossover hits more then you will like Robert Palmer's version better. Her cousin sings and produces as well Pebbles, girlfriend, Mercedes boy, and who founded TLC.
I like r 'n'b if you like old school then this is the version you go with. If you like pop and crossover hits then you go with Robert Palmer. Enough said.
The year was 1984 when released saw her and Alexander O'Neal in concert in 88. Great concert she sanged all her hits at the time and gave some stories behind them.
The reason you like "Robert Palmer's" version is because it doesn't have any "SOUL"!!! "Cherelle" version has "SOUL"!!!! Those women on "Robert Palmer" video looked like "Mannequins" dead with "NO" "SOULS"!!!! "TO" have "SOUL" is a "GIFT" and we have it!!!!! Just "LISTEN" to it!!!!
@REALSOUL4 Robert Palmer's had made to have crossover appeal which is why his version is favored more. Cherelle's version was made to have R&B appeal but they're both good.
either I'm high as hell or it says "Artist: Mariah Carey" under the 172 likes, 173 since I'm bout to hit the "like" button, and the 2 douches who clicked "dislike". wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
No it's not, it's been happening sinbce the 50s when white artists like Pat Boone, ripped off black artists and covered their so9ngs and garned more success because of his SKIN COLOR. You can't deny the truth.
The reason so many people think Robert Palmer's version was the original is that his was the first version they heard. They were not aware that Cherrelle's version even existed because we don't all listen to the same radio stations. No racist conspiracy at play. As far as what's better, the person with an opposing opinion to yours feels just as strongly as you do that he's right- arguing is a waste of time. As the saying goes- " Opinions are like a-holes- everybody's got one,"
I agree with @bricemyles on this one. I remember hearing this song in the 2nd grade, and the girl I had a crush on reminded me of Cherrelle - this is why it stuck with me. That was 1984
@ezmfe65 You messed around and bumped your head if you think Robert Palmer's version is better than Cherrelle's original. The singing is better and the musicianship is waaay better with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis producing this club favorite. I mean Robert Palmer is ok for hanging out with your mom or auntie but when you ready to get things popping put Mr. Palmer back in the CD case bust out some Flyte Tyme music (Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis's production company.).
I don't normally do this...but i'm a musician/producer..and i've toured with a number of Flyte Tyme produced acts..including Cherrelle...for a number of years and this record was not written by Robert Palmer...it was Cherrelle's first single from her debut (Tabu/CBS) 1984 album..written and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Some of you people should do your homework and know your musical history b4 making posts when clearly u don't know what your talking about it.. No offense 2 anyone
@bricemyles I told this to a number of people, but they don't believe me either! Palmer covered this almost 3 years after! Cherelle would have been world wide if it would have gone international... Palmer said he absolutely loved this song while here in the states, and said he just had to cover it!
@bricemyles Amen brother...in the little town I grew up in...I had heard Cherrelles version first...but when Robert Palmers version came out...that's all they played...how wrong...how freaken wrong...
Heard both versions, I like this better, has that extra beat in there Robert Palmer's didn't. His sounds good, don't get me wrong, but this version is more hyped
I love this version a lot. It was the first one I ever heard. And then I heard Robert Palmer's version and unfortunately, I like it more. I have no idea why. I really love Cherelle though.
I heard this song while driving a couple of days ago and simply fell in love with it...just amazing how music back then was so real and relatable...I was born in 85' but I love oldies..new jack swing...brings about a different feeling than the with music now...
@normandyangel That's how songs were back in the day lol. They were "WTF long". Put them mugs on, walk away, come back 15 minutes later and be like, "Wtf is this the same song?!"
@egmjag UM this was the summer of 1984. It was my coming out song and that was the year I came out of the closet. The first time I heard this song was on the Staten Island Fairy on a hot July evening from a dude playing it on his boom box....
This is TOTALLY a song a girl would sing to a boy and NOT vice versa so I could never understand or accept Robert Palmer's version. This is the only version I will ever continue to listen to.
You know, I was always sad that Cherrelle didn't become a bigger artist in the '80s and truly crossover. I kept waiting and waiting album after album saying "This is gonna be it!" and nothin'! Shame!
I hate that people think that Robert Palmer is the one that did that song. Remember the older white guy with 4 or 5 longlegged models behind him pretending to play insuments? Glad you remember.
@ezmfe65 hahaha yep i memba the models hehe but vaguely memba the song..simply irresistubble????..Oh late 70s to middlish 80s are my years..loved the funk.hard out and rememba Cherelle hard out wif all them great singers like Stacy Lattisaw,Patrice Rushen,Renee Diggs from Starpoint..hek i cld go on but u know wat i mean..always loved Saturday love aswell wif Alex Oniell...too good..cheers
@ezmfe65 It was a terrible version; what made him think that he could sing AT ALL, much less a fierce number like this. Of course, the main reason was to appeal to the white public and make them think that it was HIS song...........an old trick of whitie's
@Re9ap9er9 yeah, but I don't think it's that simple. Keep in mind that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis put the same kind of love into Robert Palmer's version, which they updated for him, as they did for Cherelle. Plus, Robert Palmer has a history of collaboration with the finest, regardless of color: The Meters in New Orleans, James Jamerson, Chaka Khan.
@ezmfe65 : i'll be honest....i actually did think robert palmer was the one who came up with this song....then i heard this version(cherelle) on the radio & thought to myself that she was copying him, but then i did a little research & found out i was wrong all along lol.
@ezmfe65 i agree his version was good however the original was better i think she wrote it and he asked to do a version but you know how record companies are
@Rammmathornnn Robert Palmer's version is better if you're gay I guess. You took the time to write me spanky. Want to be negative? Keep it to yourself princess.
@ezmfe65 I'm gay and I've always liked this (original) version better. Palmer was good at covering cuting edge R & B songs (You Are In My System) that packed a wallop. He's great but no one tops Cherrelle, Jam & Lewis. Used to put this on mix tapes for friends in the 80's and the white guys would always comment on this "female" perspective of what they thought belonged to Robert Palmer....back when radio was segregated. Glad that's mostly over....
This came out when I was 10 years old...and she still fine... ~25 years later
