I have no clue...and i don't think the stranger could've taken the keys, I think the man had them when he went to the gas station. My best guess is maybe he could've been a cop and the wife committed a crime and the woman was the cop? I dunno.

 The sedan was being used as a hearse and his wife is in a coffin and the stranger was the woman in the beginning

The woman in the beginning is not the man's wife, but a hitchhiker. The wife was already dead. The hitchhiker is the stranger.

Third answer: there was nobody in the car, so the wife wasn't inside. The trunk was unlocked (or the doors were open still). Because the wife was outside of the car, she could be killed easily.

The doors were locked, but they were open. The stranger got in through the doors. Or, the wife rolled down the windows for fresh air. I hope I have the answer!
