This type of guitar was invented in the 1920s as a way to make guitars louder before the invention of the electric guitar. Underneath the round cover in the middle of the body of the guitar is an aluminum cone, which work exactly like the speaker cones of any stereo system, except that the vibrations are not driven by electromagnetism, but rather by the vibrations of the strings. They are most often played with a slide. They were (and still are) mostly used by blues and Hawaiian music players.
