I don't like that they write her off from the start as ugly. SHES NOT ugly; she just looks homely; underfed; and her appearance needs to be spruced up!! COME ON; she looks cute as a kid. I never liked Aunt Norris; shes SUCH a BITCH!! Calling her niece ugly; she didn't say it; but u know what she meant!! AND NOONE wants her to leave with them!!
@mapis7060 All Jane Austen filmatisations! :D Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion... There are several versions of all. Also films adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's books are excellent! I've only watched Cranford and Wives and Daughters, but I hear North and South is also excellent. And then there's always the Brontës with Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. :)
after first reading masfield park about 2 summers ago, i did some reaserch on jane austen's work. i can't belive that some people didnt really like this book, so the plot is a bit..well you know but i liked it and it was way easier to get into than Emma, which i still havent finished and doubt i ever will, which is a shame.
This is an eternity better than the 2007 version. The 2007 version is disgusting! I felt sick when I saw the actors and the ugly costumes that they wore! Not to mention the poor acting and it was also very inaccurate.

Never before in any Jane austin film have I actually fallen in love with the antagonist male. And was heartbroken when he turned wrong but then rejoiced when edmund realized he loved her.
@megumelu42 I too am a great lover of books which also started with Austen. I wish I could do what your dad did with my daughter. I search high and low for books that I think will capture her imagination and ignight the love of reading. However reading there is no spark. SIGH!
I love it so much more than the book version-- which NEVER happens for me. I just love this Fanny. She has so much more personality and so much less self-righteousness (or... obnoxious self righteousness, anyway) than book Fanny.
The whole spin that they put on it just made it a more interesting story, with a more empowered and less passive protagonist.
@hotchocowithoreo i think this fanny price is more of a reflection of jane austen herself...she even says some of the lines that jane uses as the narrarator, and the whole independent, and almost womans rights theme is way more jane than fanny haha! I think anybody who is a fan of jane austen has to have some admiration for her!! So i guess it makes perfect sense to love this version of "Fanny" lol
P.S Don't judge me! I'm 13, and I don't understand ANYTHING from the 1st chapter! At least I gave it a chance, unlike lots of other people that just watch the movie anyway...
I tried reading the book for summer reading, but it got confusing... heheh that's why I'm here.... Would you say this movie is the most accurate version to the book?
I started watching the 2007 version and was already put off when Fanny was running around without getting winded. Poor thing probably had asthma. Jane Austen commenters are usually right on the mark so I will watch this instead! Thank you, love them all.
I loved this Mansfield Park, but Fanny was never brave enought to love Henry and have a passionate life. She took the easy way out , no passion with Edmund, I cannot imagine they were anything, but brother and sister, no heir from them.
@ladybugs7ful In my opinion Fanny was brave BECAUSE she stayed true to her love of Edmund. Fanny was very passionate, it just wasn't expressed in the same matter that Henry showed his passion. Plus, she would have never been happy with Henry, his personality was too strong for her, she preferred Edmund's caring, gentle personality. I believe that they would have been very happy together. :)
Why have I not heard of this version of Mansfield Park?
Yes, they are first cousins, but it was not uncommon in those days, if you will recall Lady Catherine de Bourgh in P&P wanting Darcy to marry his cousin, Miss Anne de Bourgh. It seems that the Crawfords, who are worldly urbane intrusions into the quiet domestic seclusion of Mansfield, are a threat, but the marriage of the cousins re-establishes the harmony of Mansfield that the Crawfords disturbed.
So i have a question. If Aunt Norris is Fanny's aunt, then technically, Edmund is not her blood-related cousin, yeah? Just to make sure i have it right.
@BellaLin27 Oh ok. Ya i noticed that both Fanny's and Edmund's mothers looked very much alike. probably twins. I guess Edmund's mum looks better cos she's well cared for.
@hyacinthdibley ... Lindsay Duncan played both Fanny's mother and Edmund's mother, she has also played 'Lady Catherine De Burgh' in Lost in Austen, what a fabulous actor she is...
I think in the book and here, Fanny's mother always regretted marringing for love, as her family thought she had married beneath her, but because of the bond between blood they took Fanny in, to give hre a better life...
@hyacinthdibley In the book, Jane Austen mentions several times the resemblence of Mrs Bertram and Mrs Price. I guess, that's why they had the same actress play both roles
I dont like this version. there is so many mistakes and errors that I wasn't even able to watch this movie to the end. This movie is historicaly inaccurate and book is totally different.
@ecartsiger As much as I respect Austen, Fanny Price is her least engaging heroine and, considering they gave her some JA's own juvenile writings, it really improved her character. JA's mother and sister thought Fanny was insipid and, though Jane loved her, I kind of agree. I think those ladies and even Jane herself might agree that giving Fanny layers was a good thing. Especially ones so ties to Austen.
this version is great, only its very different from the book..though wish they had include the scene on how they arrived to decide to take fanny in.. to give viewer idea..somehow.
And..issnt fanny suppose to be..em, shy, sad, err depressed?
i guess my favorite character is Henry with all his flaws, weaknesses and unsteadiness - passionate characters are always more enthralling just like Heathcliff is in Wuthering Heights... of course be it understood that this preference is limited to the literary sphere... in real life, i'd be deeply contented with an Edmund!XD
each time i read mansfield park i realize even more that it is a masterpiece. Yeah, it lacks the sparkling romance of a pride and prejudice but it's a novel evidently written by a mature austen with a great depth of analysis and observation and an overpowering writing style!!
Thank you so much for this! This is my favorite version of this movie, with lovely acting and a beautiful soundtrack. I think it did a superb job of capturing Austen's story with a balance of seriousness and wit. And also thank you for such an orderly post - it's nice to not have to jump around on pages digging for the different parts of a movie!
@PoptartsCh0c0l4te Neither! I saw first part of this adaptation, and pretty much got the idea how it would play out. I suggest you read the book - that's true Austen, after all!
I love to watch and read Mansfield Park...when I was 11 years old my Dad decided that my brothers and I were not reading enough...and he took one of his weekly trips to Barnes & Nobles and picked up a paperback of this book for me to read...and give him a book report in 2 weeks...and this book started my love of books...and I thank my Dad and Jane Austen for doing that
@megumelu42 oh your dad's great! I remember when I was abt 11 I told my dad I wanted to read Anna Karenina, n' he said u wouldn't understand what it's abt.I was like how could u know if I didn't read it! ...bt probably he's right. Jane Austen's more suitable for kids of that age~Tolstoy can wait for another 2 or 3 years~
@megumelu42 Lucky girl! Good dad. My mother did something like that when I was a kid. She took me to a bookstore which sold old books and I found Pride and Prejudice there. Funny, but I asked to buy that because it looked so tattered. I still keep that poor book and Jane Austen is one of my favorite writers.
@megumelu42 Hey thank you for the inspiration of doing just that. I commend your father for that and that is an idea I hope to take to my children some day.
Lesley Barber's score for this was absolutely exquisite. The violins perfectly reflecting the distance in a young fanny's heart and mind between the home she left and the home she's entering. Not to mention the sense of longing and wonder a young mind would have felt!! This soundtrack is available on ITUNES.
i am usualy one who is of the opinion, if you do an adaptaion, do it perfectly and to the book. however, i first saw the 2007 version, and although it was more dedicated to the origonal story, i found i much prefer this version. i at first dismissed it because of the obvious fact that she has brown hair, but as entertainment value goes, its the superior. its as much true to the book as briget jones to pride and prejudice or as clueless is to emma, however, i extremely recommend watching. x
i just finished reading this book. the whole thing was a continual surprise to me. it is so different from all her other books, much less simple. the characters are all much more indepth and harder to figure out. ive now read all of jane austens books, and next to pride and prejudice, i think mansfield park is my favorite. the movie is a ridiculous interpretation of the book, most the characters in this movie are shown to have the complete opposite disposition as they have in the real story.
@truthpeacelove77 her most difficult book in some ways her greatest-- I confess though I have read it a number of times I still have difficulty with it--she wrote (it was thought) in a letter that the book was about Ordination--but recently it has been discovered that that is a misreading of her punctuation--so what it is "about" remains elusive "performance" "Improvement" theatricality--and yes slavery but the controversy persists
@truthpeacelove77 I agree-the whole idea of Fanny accepting Mr. Crawford and then taking it back shows an inconsistency that I cannot even begin to imagine in the real Fanny Price
@truthpeacelove77 I finished reading this book just a few days ago. I don't quite know what to think of it, save that Edmund is incredibly thick for not realizing Fanny's feelings and that the ending was far too rushed. He falls for her, proposes and marries her, all in exposition without a single bit of dialogue! After the drama that came before it, it all felt awfully fast.
This is one difficult book--in a letter she seems to say it is about ordination but someone checked the punctuation and it doesn't mean that--I know Mansfield is not chosen lightly the 1772 ruling on slavery I think bears his name but I have to check--but I still find it hard reading
Why would she have so many kids if she knew she couldnt pay for them!!! It looks like she is pregnet there!!! Great movie thought, the best of all the Mansfield Park movies made!! Thank you so much for posting!! <3
@frivoller Jane Austen's Emma is perfect! I prefferred the BBC's 2009 Adaptation of it personally because its got Johnny Lee Miller in it aswell...and plus im not a fan of Gywneth P (Shes in the movie). Emma is really really good!
@frivoller@frivoller the 2006 version of Jane Eyre is fabulous! It is a little on the dark side, but not as dark as Wuthering Heights. Also Tennant of Wildfell Hall is quite good. A Room with a view, Daniel Derronda, Ideal Husband, Dangerous Beauty, and Middlemarch (a little long, but overall fab with Rufus Sewell) Lady Jane is good as well as Posession (03) Def Jane Eyre tho
o man! I JUST saw a really good movie that I am sure you would like.... its called, Little Dorrit, and its by charles dickens and it is SO romantic and mysterious but its like, 9 hours long haha =P check it out!
no question ask..i like this movie and the two lead actors they r d whole package of ideal girl and guy that u want share ur life with..gud job pls.upload more movies like this..
I am extreeeeeemely shocked by her forwardness, though I have been warned it is all a little different...she's supposed to be unable to string two words together from fright...
This will forever be my favorite movie and version and someday I hope my generation will love it just as much as I do. Oh how quickly a hope morphs into a wish without as much as a fluttering thought...
Yay! I've been wanting to see this version for a long time! I tried to rent it over the weekend, but they only had the VHS and the VCR here doesnt work. Thanks!
Because in the book it was the choice of the aunt and uncle and they only wanted one child and they wanted a girl. If you were the aunt and uncle and you had children of your own would you want to take on 8 extra kids? or even two more? No. They did it to make them feel/look good, not because they really cared.
thank you so much for uploading this- even though i watched this some time ago on ths site-i hope u keep sharing any other jane austen adaptations with us! i bought the emma dvd-the gwyneth paltrow version-have you seen it?? i think that is probably the best ever done! & sense & sensibility too- jane austen herself would have approved!
At first I was concerned about the liberties they took with the story, such as Mary smoking and Fanny accepting Henry Crawford only to reject him, but each time I see it, I enjoy it all the more. I feel that this version depicts a more human Fanny that women can relate too. The one in the book was superb, but I also loved how they intertwined Jane Austen history with that of Fanny. The costumes and casting are outstanding. Acting is breathtaking and passionate.
I saw this 2 years ago on IFC for the first time. I've watched it at least once a month ever since! This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thank you so much for posting.
Even though this movie isn't loyal to the book, I still love it almost against my will because I was prepared to dislike it when I heard that Fanny was not going to be shy. While the book is infinitely better, this movie is still very good

i just finished reading this book. the whole thing was a continual surprise to me. it is so different from all her other books, much less simple. the characters are all much more indepth and harder to figure out. ive now read all of jane austens books, and next to pride and prejudice, i think mansfield park is my favorite. the movie is a ridiculous interpretation of the book, most the characters in this movie are shown to have the complete opposite disposition as they have in the real story.
truthpeacelove77 1 year ago
@truthpeacelove77 her most difficult book in some ways her greatest-- I confess though I have read it a number of times I still have difficulty with it--she wrote (it was thought) in a letter that the book was about Ordination--but recently it has been discovered that that is a misreading of her punctuation--so what it is "about" remains elusive "performance" "Improvement" theatricality--and yes slavery but the controversy persists
vivascargill 1 year ago
@truthpeacelove77 I agree-the whole idea of Fanny accepting Mr. Crawford and then taking it back shows an inconsistency that I cannot even begin to imagine in the real Fanny Price

@musemindy1 This. So much.

After the drama that came before it, it all felt awfully fast.

i think i watched this movie too often :) but still love all those costume dramas just can't get enough.

This is one difficult book--in a letter she seems to say it is about ordination but someone checked the punctuation and it doesn't mean that--I know Mansfield is not chosen lightly the 1772 ruling on slavery I think bears his name but I have to check--but I still find it hard reading

the moves great but the book is boring and shit as hell

@frivoller Jane Austen's Emma is perfect! I prefferred the BBC's 2009 Adaptation of it personally because its got Johnny Lee Miller in it aswell...and plus im not a fan of Gywneth P (Shes in the movie). Emma is really really good!

@frivoller @frivoller the 2006 version of Jane Eyre is fabulous! It is a little on the dark side, but not as dark as Wuthering Heights. Also Tennant of Wildfell Hall is quite good. A Room with a view, Daniel Derronda, Ideal Husband, Dangerous Beauty, and Middlemarch (a little long, but overall fab with Rufus Sewell) Lady Jane is good as well as Posession (03) Def Jane Eyre tho

why is it out of the 8 childern the mom has, only one gets to go?
blue0eyed0girlyy0 2 years ago
Because in the book it was the choice of the aunt and uncle and they only wanted one child and they wanted a girl. If you were the aunt and uncle and you had children of your own would you want to take on 8 extra kids? or even two more? No. They did it to make them feel/look good, not because they really cared.

Even though this movie isn't loyal to the book, I still love it almost against my will because I was prepared to dislike it when I heard that Fanny was not going to be shy. While the book is infinitely better, this movie is still very good
