  • Thank you so much for sharing!! I've gone through a lot this past year or so. I got really good at hiding my failures in my journey to become a professional myself. By the grace of God, I will be walking with the class of 2013, with a serious testimony to share of how God helped me turn my failures into success.

  • This was on time, thank you so much for sharing i really needed to hear this. Be Blessed!

  • How did you wear your hair on your interviews..thats one thing that has been eating at me how should I wear my natural hair job seeking.im a recent grad looking for a job this would be a great help ro me

  • Thank u for giving your testimony.. Very helpful and encouraging

  • LOVE the message! I really enjoy your channel, Keep'em coming!!!

  • You are sooo echoing the same sentiments as I, having (3) courses left towards my Master's in Psychology with a specialization in I-O Psychology I've not met anyone that can actually mentor me in this field, not saying they don't exist but wow! Fear of failure was where I was because of my age, nearing 50 and wanting to start over is the hardest hurdle to get over but God!

  • You are such an inspiration to me! I admire your honesty and your success with school. I have messed up so many times in school and my GPA has suffered. Watching this video has reminded me that with hard work I can push through and overcome those mistakes that I have made throughout my college journey as well as in everyday life. God Bless!

  • I think this is a wonderful idea and thank you very much for this!

  • Awesome! And you're so young too!! Have you considered speaking to high school kids?

  • i'm so proud of you i am currently on my educational journey, i'm going to either getting my pH.D or a doctorate to do clinical work, #sciencegeek

  • I love this video because I can relate with overcoming the low GPA. My undergraduate years were not sparkly either but today I have my Masters Degree. So I know what you are talking about. I already liked you but the fact that you allow us to see the bad and good, makes me like you even more.

  • I KNOW YOU KNOW THIS BUT YOU ARE TRULY A BLESSING! THANKS SO MUCH. really thank you so much!! im in my 1st yr and feeling like this

  • Thank you so much for putting this up, I can relate a lot to your first year of college. This is really inspiring!

  • F.Y.I.

I watched the whole video.. Just what I needed to hear this morning..

    Big props to you!!

  • you're blessin people Dr.....God bless you for that! You got me pullin out my MCAT book to study rather than procrastinating, and doing stuff that won't matter years from now. Thank you so much! =o) *Sis-n-Christ*

  • Thank you!!! School was very difficult for me because I had to work full-time and was the only black in my class. I've started my M.A. in Linguistics. I've learned Spanish and have been currently teaching myself Portuguese. I've played piano for 15 years. Violin for 10 years. All these things I had to teach myself the majority of the times because we were too poor to afford it. People are shocked when they see or here this. I still fight feelings of self-doubt. Thanks for the reassurance.

  • Im so happy you made this video. You have no idea how much youve helped me. (please inbox me for details) Im in the same boat now right along with you, my first year was horrid as well, im still trying to climb up the ladder from it, even though ive passed every class with As and Bs since then i still have a low GPA. It gets frustrating sometimes and I feel like its not worth it at times, but my faith wont let me quit. How did you manage to build up your GPA?

  • Preach! Starting out with a low GPA is a big hole to climb out of

  • @candacerneejones; I restarting my journey at 28 and its all good. We all need to encourage each other when times get rough and even when we just a pick me up. Just focus on where you want to be and take it one step at a time.

  • I viewed this days ago but never commented but after watching this a third time I had to come and thank you for posting this. Truely inspiring and touched me personally. Congrats on all your blessings and thank you for continuing to be a blessing.

  • I find you so very inspiring. I am applying to medical school this year on the faith. you're sort of big sister to me! Keep inspiring young black women everywhere!

  • You are such a role model to me. I know about roadblocks and all I want to go back to school and get my masters in mental health therapy but I have to delay it another year because I am becoming a mom. But I know that will make me happy. Someday I will be receiving my PHD and I also hope to be a professor someday. I have learned that things happen in God's time and I have to accept that and not stress about the small stuff love this series.

  • Congrats on your graduation. I have no doubt you will go far.

  • i was just about to ask you what degree do you have...lol

  • Dr.Nina...thank you for moving past your fear and allowing God to use you

  • Thank you so much. This has been truly a blessing to me. As a professional I have experienced failures and ppl have a way of making you feel ashamed to fail. But my failures have made me humble and are a tool in making me better each day.

  • I am so excited to see the rest of this series. All your words of advice are truly inspiring to a young college female such as my self. Your words are the truth! Thank you!

  • !God is truly using you!! Thank you for this series and for being an instrument of truth, inspiration, motivation and a shining example to his power. "Well done!"

  • "Guess what I'm Dr. Nina Ellis-Harvery so guess what you can't make me feel bad about that first year". <3 Nina thank you for this video!!!!! I'm 27 and restarting my jounrey and my first few years of college was horrid as well.....but hey I've gone from 1.0 to 1.75 in one semester :) ......I'm so excited to listen to all your Chronicles......failure is OK....now moving forward ;)

  • Oh girlll!! Where are you teaching?? I go to SMU and I have ADD! Come over here, we need you! lol

  • This was very encouraging. And people need this. Thank you for sharing.

  • Dr., I will be standing by and learning as you teach, awesome!

  • CONGRATULATIONS ON THE PH. D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Would love if you can continue your relationship series...we could learn a lot from you!

  • Congratulations and may God continue to bless you.

  • Excellent vid., with great information. Thanks for sharing.

  • Ms., or shall I say, Dr. Hervey, I just wanted to say I'm so proud of you. Even though I do not know you, I always get excited when young A-A women do their thing and push through obstacles! I felt exactly how you felt in college. Coming from an all-black schools my entire life & from MS, I decided to go to U.S. Military Academy. A Chemistry major & the only black female in my field, I felt no one wanted to help me. With God's help, I had to get uncomfortable to make it through. Keep it up!

  • Feel you, my road to become an RN, man it was and still is a hard one. I can't even front I'm 28 going on 29 and just now got it together. I have 16 more months to go, yea it seems like alot but I'm here and still standing. My gaol is to become a FNP and open a free clinic for inner city women and children.

  • It is truly amazing that I just started to follow you because I am about to embark on a similar journey. I am an educator now. I teach 2nd grade, but I am entering Grad School in School Psychology in Aug., and it has already been a journey. I am truly proud of your page and glad that you made it. I look forward to seeing more videos.

  • Keep up the GREAT work! Yes failures are important.... its all about what you do with them! God knows I have had my share of them, but I am glad for each and every one of them (although I some times forget about the positive side of failures)... They all have helped me become the person I am today! Thank you for the reminder.....AMEN!!!

  • Your hair is beautiful! I wish I could put my face in it. All weaves and perms should be outlawed.

  • thanx soo much for this series n sharing ur life experience :)

  • Like many others, I needed to hear this as well. Thank you for your honesty and motivation. I applied to law school and wasn't accepted, I thought about giving up on it, and I made excuses...but I'm going to try again, because I know this is what I WANT to do.

  • that message was powerful and touched me directly.. i have been feeling that way for awhile i have started to check my ego at the door.. so i hope you keep coming with these chronicles.. much appreciated..

  • Lord, I really needed to hear this. You have no idea. Many thanks BBBD and congrats to you!!!!!!!

  • Congrats Dr. Baby Doll. I am also napptural in pursuit of becoming a Doctor (Psychiatrist). I have dealt with the issue of over coming fear of failure. My first year i had such similarites. • Congrats to you, Im proud of you

  • Congrats Dr. BBBD!!!!

  • loved it!

  • What is to dislike about this video? If you dislike this video it is because of your own self doubt. She is giving encouragement and in no way is she bragging, just telling her story. Just wanted to let you know I hear you Nina. Thanks and much success in Texas.

  • i have a 1.50 right now and I am a freshman in college this is very encouraging

  • Beautiful message!

  • Awesome message! Thank you for being so real. Sometimes people don't realize that that in itself is a true blessing!

  • you make me feel encouraged. Im going into my first year at a university (although im a transfer student, entering as a junior). You are guiding us young ladies on a path to greatness, and how to succeed. I will try my hardest to learn from your actions and take my failures as a learning experience. I will be attending a predominantly white school & im learning to accept that i may have to be the minority sometimes to get to higher places in life. THANK YOU for this video

  • Congratulations, girlfriend! To be a professor at your age is no small thing!

I'm thinking of switching careers (currently in Human Resources) and going back to school to become a teacher at the age of 36 (with a husband, mortgage and three kids!) It's the scariest time in my life, but your words have been an inspiration to me!

  • I love it, I can't wait for the next video on the chronicles of a nappy headed professional

  • Great video. I love the inspiration that you always give. Thank you for the encouraging words.

  • Dr. B! You are such an INSPIRATION. God has truly blessed me to find your channel, and I have been a follower for a while. I am a 25 year old woman who is in her 2nd year of law school. IT HAS NOT BEEN EASY. My mother was killed when I was a child; I was divorced by the age of 23, BUT GOD. I have been through A LOT for my age. I understand this nappy headed journey!!! May God Bless you, and I wish you continued success :)

  • wow great video! I just learned so much. Thank you

  • My first year of college I failed 2 classes..that was last year, and believe me, I was so crushed..I came from high school the same way. I never had to study, and I always made A's & B's. This year I plan to do so much better! I'm so excited and just ready! This video really spoke volumes to me..Thank you so much Dr. Hervey! And plz believe I will continue to dream big, because not at all is not an option for me. (:

Ive been down lately for the past year in school and its.verryy nervewrecking becoz my stats arent where I want them, but I will keep trucking. It took me 6 yrs to get my bachelors mostly because ive switched majors and even schools,,but this is what I want!

  • girl i feel like this right now in my doctoral program -- closed off and isolated. the insecurities were starting to eat away at my esteem and confidence. I am working to find the like-minded people in my circle as well -- not only as a student, but also as a mommy, because that is another sphere that tends to be isolating as well. Self has been checked, lol! Love this video! Thank you for reminding me of this :)

  • I hope u come to the University of Houston! Sooo excited about this series.

  • @Living0For0God I won't be far! ;-)

  • Thanks for sharing this, I really needed it.

  • What you are saying is so true. My first semester in college I did HORRIBLE!! AN A+ in an inner city public school is a C in college. I am now more focused. To grow, sometimes you have to fail.

  • This is great, can't wait for this series. I'm 28 and is now just doing whats needed for me to become who I want to be in life. You are such and inspiration....GOD Bless You, Nina.

  • You are an inspiration! I am a sociology major and I want to become a professor as well. What advice can you give about getting your PhD and becoming a professor?

  • I really needed this video. I'm going into my senior year of undergrad and I'm aspiring to get my Ph.D. It's been a tough time, and I get a lot of grief about the career path I'm trying to take on. You're such an inspiration all around! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

  • Wow, thank you for sharing your experiences as always. Your first year of college and philosophy on studying mirrors my exact experience my first year, so I can definitely relate. I just graduated with my B.A. in Anthropology and it took 6 years (with a semester off) for me to get my degree because I didn't understand the essence of studying, but I do now and I don't regret the time it took because I learned so much about myself & the world. But lastly, Prof. Nina much congratz & much success!

  • @Beautifulbrwnbabydol

Congratulations Professor Nina! As a young professor myself, and one who will be furthering her studies, continue to learn and grow.

I don't know how far I am willing to go. I am just trying to take it a day at a time. I thank God for my failures, because it is a teaching tool to aid me to gain success.

  • i love your intro!

You are truly an inspiration; from your hair journey, to your weight loss, to your personal and workplace/education background you truly have a lot of helpful stories and tips to share and I love to listen! Thanks for sharing your stories with us!

  • you're lovely!

  • Awesome! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

  • I am EXTREMELY proud of your success! And although you stressed the irrelevance of race throughout your lecture, it is VERY, and I mean VERY impressive that an adopted black girl who was more than 100 pounds overweight has determined and progressed her way to become an inspiration that transcends gender and ethinicity. YOU GO GIRL and I thank God for you!

  • OMG! I felt the same way when I went to graduate school.

  • Im getn a late start at school because of big bumps n the road and its really hard...I needed to here this im n my first year of school and it is not easy.

  • Thank you for the post. My eyes welled up a few times during this video because I can relate to failure and success at many of life's avenues. I have done things people said I couldn't do and also failed at things others have considered easy accomplishments. I have many talents, but my current situations doesn't allow for me to focus on them as much as I would like. It is videos like these that remind me of my potential and kindle the ambers of success embedded in my soul.

  • I loved your first entry, and as an aspiring writer/blogger. You have re-awakened my goals and ambitions to move forward with my writing goals. Thank you. Can't wait for your next entry

  • Thank You!

  • You are an inspiration to me. I am a junior in college studying psychology and I want to gain my doctorate in clinical psychology.

Perhaps you can do a video on the process you went through specifically for psychology during this video series.

  • Definitely looking forward to this series, I can def relate to some of the issues. Love how real you are being about your journey to professionalism so far.

  • I totally understand your hardship of not knowing how to study. Thats how I was my junior year of high school. I cheated myself (not studying) but my AP classes taught me the essence of studying. And you are so right - we don't have to stick together! That can cause more harm than good.

  • This video has really blessed me. Thank you so much. You are a true inspiration and motivator. God bless you.

  • I can't believe someone can dislike this video. Do your thing girl, you are an inspiration!!!

  • In the interview process sooooo well put!!!

  • Keep up the great work Honey and I look forward to future series and Vokle chats I really enjoy watching and listening to you. I don't know to many 27 year olds with a head on their shoulders like you and its amazing to hear the way you talk and open up about yourself. The first chronicles hit home with that FEAR OF FAILURE, I have to post on my desk at work that Fear is simply F-alse E-xpectaions A-ppearing R-eal ( FEAR). Thanks Much!!!

  • Congrats on the new job

  • In Oprah words..."light bulb moment" when you said leave your ego at the door. I heard it before....this time I felt it.

  • Everything you said is absolutly true! I'm in my early thirties, a mother of 4 and a wife. I've been in school now for 1 year furthuring what i should have done 15 years ago. I'm at a completly diferent mind set now in my life and i've learned that a closed mouth doesn't get fed is the truth and nothing but the truth. It is not easy, but what you put in you get out. I had to branch out of my confort zone and open my self up to new things. Congratulations! And much more success!
