When you get washed into the rocks just scramble to high spot and worry about the board later. He is so dedicated to that stupid board he is oblivious to the ocean behind him. I think he actually caused more dings to it than if he'd just let it wash over the rocks and retrieved it after he was safely out of the shore pounders.

I see it time and time again on the beaches down here, people who think surfing is 'easy' paddling out in spots where they have no business being & then getting themselves in a bad situation, where other surfers or the lifeguards have to put themselves at risk to help them out. The lesson is, 'if you're unsure don't go out', have some more lessons and stick to a nice sandy beach.
