Eh My 500 gig came with 2 opequ plastic feet and the slots are way differant lol. I think they changed the casing at some point. I jsut mine September 7, 2010 and there is no stickers any where on the face. It has a power button in the back.

I was able to dissable the VCD. What I really want to do, is have a way to rewrite to that chip so I can boot An OS of my choice and have it safe. and secure from dammage. this would be a great concept. If it could be hacked.

No, the My Book needs a power adapter t function, but you can get the My Passport edition from western digital, its just like the My Book, with the exception of a 2.5' hdd rather than a 3.5' hdd. Its also usb powered so you don't need an adapter for it.

The MacBook Air uses a really rare voodoo( just kidding) hard drive thats 1.8". Its really thin, and really EXPENSIVE. I'm not sure, but according to my research a couple of years ago its around $450 for a 1.8" 80GB PATA hard drive...

, a 3.5 HDD is a somewhat larger (Not that much) hard drive that was meant for a desktop PC, typically, external hard drive manufacturers such as WD usually use the 2.5 harddrive to build a portable hard drive as it is smaller, an example is the My Passport edition from WD. they also use the 3.5 external drives for home use, its still portable but its meant for normal use, like if you dont plan to do alot of travelling with it. An example of this is the My Book edition from WD

Dont do that. 2.5-hard drives already consume more power than allowed when they spin up (up to 1.5A; allowed are 0.5), and I dont know how much it is for 3.5-drives.

And I dont think you want to destroy your USB-port (it wont be good with FireWire as well).

I don't think you can get a Network Had Drive (NAS) for $100. I'm sure it is a USB Hard Drive.

With a NAS you can backup and open/save your files from the LAN and the Internet.

To use time machine i belive i must have a extenal hardrive that is bigger than the 1 in my macbook.

my question is, will i be able to put extra files from other computers on this drive as well as my time machine backup?

eg a few files other family member wish to backup.

I just got a wd hard drive (500gb) just like yours. But i use a pc (not for long) and every time i start my computer with the hard drive connected, it doesn't work... so i need to disconnect it every time i turn my computer off, and the next time i want to turn it on i have to wait until it's finished loading... -.- soo annoying, I WANT A MAC!!
