I don't think the robot actually understands the words that are being said. It just recognises the sound wave pattern of the speech and associates it with the IR signal it detected.

What I can't understand, in this day and age, is why TV, DVD, etc manufacturers are still pumping out products that use Infra-Red (IR).
Radio Frequency (RF) remote control is superior to IR as you don't need line of sight to the device. You can even control an RF device from another room (through walls). BOSE have had RF controllers for years, and the PS3 uses a BlueTooth RF system, so there's nothing stopping other manufacturers from following suit.
I have had coffee tables that have blocked line of sight (IR transmission) to my floor level entertainment unit in which my DVD player was. Using RF control would also eliminate the need for glass doors on entertainment units.
Furthermore, some people have more than one TV connected to a DVD player or Cable TV receiver so they can watch movies and programs in other rooms of the house.
Wonderful as they can be..I cant live with a potentially dangerous frequency waves emitter..thats right..cellphones are dangerous too..use them only when you really need them..

i agree, but not entirely. we have 5 remotes that all need to be used just to turn on the Wii. With this little chicken i could just be like, "Turn on stereo, turn on cable box, turn on TV, change imput to GAME, turn on Wii" and i wont get frustrated over finding the remotes. lol

Well this is fantastic. People aren't lazy enough as it is, they don't have to get up to change the channel on the television any more as of now, but in the future you can sit on your ass even more. So, no remotes, even less exercise, and we get to store fat in a whole new place: Our fingers. Great. Just great.

You're right, my academic and professional qualifications have no bearing on my ability to see that a robot is not a GUI. You really don't like being corrected do you? Three consecutive posts because someone pointed out you were mistaken?
You're allowed to make mistakes. If you happen to post them in a public forum in a superfluous display of opinion and knowledge then it's a bit embarrassing, but who cares?. You're not going to help with all of this self-justification. Let it go.

BTW, this is nothing more than a GUI for people who hate using computers. The whole purpose of AI is to fool people into thinking computers think and feel. This is nothing more than a loaded control that doesn't require the involvement of a computer. But when it crashes.. The perceived IQ of the device reduces to 0, and it is a door stop..
I'll be impressed when the hardware and software for such a device is open sourced. Robots are patentable, that's why the japanese make them.
