This is one of the world's best news theme ever done! Does anybody know who composed it? I remember it from holidays in the UK in the 1990's. It is best with the build segment (during which the news headings are read) and then this one - total climax. The only theme that might challenge it is the Soviet Union news around 1989-1990. I still haven't been able to trace it but I remember watching the news just to hear it.
Please BBC.... I urge you to return to the serious broadcaster you once were.
Get rid of Jonathan Ross and bring back this tremendous theme tune. The graphics are still modern. Please return to this immediately. It made the news sound serious and it still was.
Apparently that was one of the reasons why Martyn Lewis left. He was a fantastic journalist.
The dumbed down BBC will collapse if it keeps on ignoring the people. Stop being Orwellian and listen to us!
Totally agree with you. A great intro that didn't need millions of pounds, hours of meetings and young students trying to 'express their artistic abilites'. The 90s ruled.
I absolutely agree with AidanLunn. There is an air of patriotism about this opening music. Watching this makes me feel all warm inside for some reason, and proud to be British too.
Well midnless Self Indulgence are an american heavy metal band, and they hate patriotism. I meant it sounds loud, brash and attention-grabbing. I personally don't think that the old 9pm news theme tune sounds at all patriotic.
I wish that this could once again be the BBC News theme tune, its more patriotic, intidimidating and dramatic compared to the current "Apocalyptic rave" which is comparatively PG rated.
Yup. They kept the budget down by recording each one over the previous one(s). So the Nine O' Clock NEw is a mix of the 1 o clock 6 o clock AND nine o clock new music. Quite clever.
Ive a feeling Ive told you before, this 9pm news theme was recorded in 1988, FIVE YEARS before they introduced the 1pm and 6pm news bulletins for the blue newsroom graphics.
The Nine O'Clock theme tune featured in the video was first used in 1988, however, it was re-recorded in stereo for the 1993 re-launch of the BBC News bulletins. That's the one used in the video. The 1988-1993 version sounds much harsher and is in mono.
THE OLDEN DAYS 1980S WERE BEST TUNES AND GOOD INTRUDUCTION. THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT WHAT ARE THEY WATTING FOR?

@johngr70 The earlier version of this same theme music might just top it - look in the "Mrs thatcher resigns" clip on the right.

BBC News titles at their very best. Wonderful theme and striking visual.

Love the theme tune; better than the beeps and electronic sounds that they have now.

I think this is the best version of the BBC news, it is very profesisional and seems like the programme is serious/important.
The modern version is not that great.
Great memories. they could always bring it back like the way ITN brought back the dongs for news at ten.

Why was the 1966 World Cup being shown in 1996 on the news? It's not like their tape truck broke down for 40 years.

If only they started using this music again, it would help put them miles ahead of Sky News and their stupid retarded gimicks

GOD I LOVE THIS THEME TUNE!!!!
so much better than those stupid beeps, like a electro rave or something.
this is so much more powerful and hardhitting!
BRING IT BACK!!!!

Totally agree with you. Class tune, very formal, not like now!

I couldn't agree more. The beeps were probably to make the BBC more "with it".
Hoddersrevenge 4 years ago
well what about this:
BBC if you are reading, to appeal to a youth audience now, the music has to sound loud and brash.
what sounds more like a Mindless Self Indulgence gig? Those annoying beeps or this masterpiece?
exactly
bring the scary orchestra back!!!!!

The original version was recorded in 1988, yes. This however is a rerecorded version and introduced in 1993. The versions sound very different.
