The issue rests with the States. The true meaning of our Republic is lost in government education, by design.
We have never been a nation, we are a Federation of 50 nation-states, a Union. The Constitution was designed for the States and Federal Gov to be equal partners, neither one over the other, separation of powers. The States have to force the limits on the Fed.

TJ - China is much larger than the US and has a more centralized govenment--yet is comparatively more proficient at encouraging industrial growth, building infrastructure, controlling poplulation growth, training engineers, peacefully acquiring natural resources, promoting exports, savings and investment, etc., etc. I conceed that gov't corruption is a much bigger problem in China than in US. But guaging the effectiveness of government soley by its level of corruption is myopic at best.

Actually China's labor laws are very protective--but they are poorly enforced. Because labor unions are illegal, workers will sacrifice their rights to keep their jobs. @sidecar771 you just contradicted yourself. How can the GENERAL welfare apply to just one person or group?? "General" means EVERYONE. Seizing one person's wealth and giving it to another person does nothing to promote the "general" welfare. It helps one person at the expense of another.
If a burglar robs your house, does that support the general welfare? No. It supports the burglar, or whoever receives stolen money from the burglar. Unapportioned taxes are nothing more than legalized theft.

All they do is call it something else, such as "taxation", "asset seizure" (as with drug dealers), etc. The Nazis stole the assets of Jews in 1930's/40's Germany. Was that legal? America does NOT have a military draft. It's an all volunteer force. Hellooooo. They only can force you to go to war if you join the military.

George Bushs' consortium used emminint domain to appropriate private property to a different private entity,(Texas Rangers) netting himself millions in the process. Eminent Domain needs to be abolished, because it's a disgraceful violation of property rights. Sure, the government rapes up in many ways, but that doesn't mean it's right, or that we should bend over and willingly accept it like a sheep.
The govt should fear the people, not the reverse.

I'm not quite sure what reply you're fishing for.... The first reply that comes to mind is family or friends. Or if I needed immediate medical attention, I'd just show up at the ER and get it for "free" like everyone else.
I can tell you this: asking any sort of government agency for a handout wouldn't be on my list. I'd ask a charity or beg on the street before I'd call them.

The point still stands though, ad hominim falacies aside. Your implication that some sort of government health insurance is necessary for those down on their luck is untrue. There are lots of options avaialble. The current system isn't perfect, but people aren't dying on ER doorsteps from lack of medical attention.

It's disingenuous to take a snapshot of this exact moment in the history of the US/China economic relationship and use that as an arguement in favor of centralized government and socialism. You need to look at the longer-term trends. For example, 50 yrs ago, 25 yrs ago, and today. Looking at the trend between the 2, China has tended towards more capitalism and less iron-fisted gov economic control while the US has slowly tended towards more.
