Citalopram was a nightmare for me. It caused me to have a major seizure which broke my jaw and loosened three teeth (still cemented almost three years later). Coming off it - I had to - caused "suicidal ideation" and took six months of hell. Thirty three stitches in my body and a hose pipe and car later I got off it.

I actually take prozac for depression. I have taken a different anti-depressants since 1995. Is there an alternative? I'm not criticizing this video. It was powerful and sad. It kind of scared me. I'm afraid to go without an anti-depressant though.
First of all, if you do decide to stop taking it you need to do so under supervision. Some people go psychotic coming off. I can attest to the fact that withdrawal can make you feel crazy and I was only on it for about 4 months, but I felt so much better after getting off. To taper off you may need to do really slow tapering like shaving small amounts off the pills.
As for alternatives, I would not recommend replacing it with anything that is remotely similar. But (see next comment)...
nazis admistered similar programs(tests to see who to kill and tricks to kill) and had similar rights if u know what i mean ... eh hem ... genocide ... eh hem .... conspiracy ...
Depression is like a cancer, if you don't fix it early enough, it kills you little by little. One of the best treatment is unconditional love and respect. These are the basis to build a mentally healthy human being (and I said BASIS).
Jetelinka, what amyphilo leaves out is that these drugs actually help MILLIONS of people, a reason why they are allowed to be used in the United States. The information amyphilo has written is blatantly wrong. Even in this video, notably in the cases of Anna Nicole Smith and Kurt Cobain, there were other factors at play. But in America, everyone is reserved the right to their own opinion, even such as in this case, where the opinion is clearly wrong. Do your own, unbiased research.
You are missing the point. You can say this research is biased if you want. The point is do want the government screening your children or mothers and mothers to be for a possible outcome in the future. Do you want the government telling you that you have to take a DRUG! Stop the Mother's Act please and teen screen.........
First of all geminitribe, your comment makes no sense. Proofread before you post. The only point I can begin to comprehend from what you've written is that you seem to believe the government is going to try to force medication on people, which is absurd. Both the Mother's Act and Teen Screen are beneficial programs meant to help people learn about and deal with depression. They don't FORCE medication on people. This video (and your beliefs) are misleading and wrong.
They are not called antidepressives, they are antidepressants, the opposite of a depressant. Depressant / stimulant = opposites. They are not proven to improve or treat depression in fact, the only thing they have ever been proven to do is cause depression and psychosis. However, nobody is trying to tell you not to take them, we are simply promoting awareness of what can happen. So if you want to risk your own life and the lives of those around you, feel free. It's still legal to take them.
Well, then I gently ask you to give me some advice what to do with my depression, which I´ve been suffering since I was 5 years old, without medication. Without it I usually couldn´t go to school or even read or anything. With them I can do everything including travelling, going out with my friedns and other thing. I would really appreciate your opinion. (Sorry for my English, I´m not native speaker). And children, I know I will never have them, because they could have the deprresion too.
I need to correct something I wrote in the intro to this video about pregnancy, the risk of preterm birth is actually five times higher on the drugs than when not on the drugs, not two times higher. Sorry.
Nice video! Pharma is the #1 most profitable business on this entire planet - you think they care about deaths? Check out the short book: Confessions of an RX drug pusher!
Everyone, there is an URGENT need for help... the feds want to screen and drug pregnant and postpartum women!!! Please go to uniteforlife dot org and click on the petition link, sign it and send it on to your friends. We have to stop this!!!
#2: but what I find appaling is that so many doctors carelessly prescribe Ads for youngsters wiithout keeping a close watch of them It is known that SSRI can increase aggression and suicidality on youngsters and therefore should not be used on them. I am not a youngster and I was under close watch at the beginning and I am under closer watch now as I wean off. I want a study on all the homicide/suicide/shootings cases in which Ads were involved.
The same is true of adults. The only reason people are admitting the suicide in children is because parents have been outraged and demanding answers. But if more adults are drugged then they are less likely to notice the truth.
Yes you are right, everybody should be more cared about. And no, of course it doesnt justify the killing of others that I feel better. But what question is that? I don't believe that it was only the meds that killed. That would be too easy and reality is more complex. They all had mental problems and all that happened was somebody giving them drugs.
One of my friends died from an antibiotic, another got halluzinations from peneciline, another got suicidal on cortisone, one freaked out on aspirin and destroyed his room.
One more great freind of mine had an infectious wound on his hand he got something with jodid inside on it and got a heart stand still. Lucky he was revived.
Is that a reason for you to take this all from the market?
Yes, you can question all drugs. However that does not mean that antidepressants can be lumped in with all drugs or considered equally benign. My dad also had a manic reaction to an antibiotic. Sometimes people have drug interactions or interactions with other toxins in their diet or environment and sometimes it is the fault of one drug alone.
Also cortisone is a steroid and it raises your cortisol which is why the suicidal reaction occurred. Prozac and SSRIs CAUSE, not correct mental problems. Even the short term studies show this but long term studies do as well. Most people who felt better at the beginning had relapsed within 10 months. The drugs raise your cortisol and impair serotonin metabolism. Google serotonin syndrome or read about it on UNITE's website.
I also experienced an episode following taking tylenol. Also sometimes the antidepressants or artificial sweeteners are mixed in with medicines which is behind the reaction because things like aspartame and splenda are actually SSRIs too.
OK well what about people who took the drugs for migraines or back acne going on a shooting rampage or committing suicide.
The studies clearly show that the drugs make most people worse, not better. If you are lucky enough not to experience the horrible side effects then consider yourself very fortunate. As you are withdrawing you should check out theroadback dot org for information on how to taper safely or tapersafely dot org
I know these stories and I am not denying the problems that some people have from this. Doctors should inform better, offer alternative ways additional talk therapies (etc.) and take more care about their patients than just feeding them.
At what point do we admit that the risk outweighs any supposed benefit and get people real help, ban these poisons and save lives? There ARE safe ways to help people that do not put anyone at risk like these. Because of the pharma profits you and I are at risk every time we leave our homes.
Nobody has found the clue of wisdom yet. And things work different on everybody. It is a fact that antidepressants work for many people, but only if they get additional support. I don't have this only from books, I just know so many who had to take them once in their life. But I AM critical, cause there are other ways that are not used often enough.
Not really sure what that means that nobody has found the clue of wisdom yet... "Having to take them" is a total copout - nothing could be more dangerous for a depressed person than giving someone a pill that doubles (at minimum) the risk of suicide and poses a physical threat to their health and if they are a breastfeeding or pregnant mom, the health of their child. Not to mention that homicidal thinking is on the label for many drugs.
And in the end I want to say, doctors will have a good eye on alternatives, like my doctor has. She offers Qi Gong, accupuncture and progressive relaxation (Jacobsen). I did cognitive behavioural therapy, which cured me. I am not a tablet pope. I support a ppd online group and we give infos about every method, classic and holistic treatments. Everybody is different.
Sorry I wanted to say" I hope, docters soon will have a good eye..."
And yes, I consider myself fortunate because I was and I still am under a great care of responsible people. I don't know if you have experienced Depression. It is hell. Maybe we also have a bit different systems. Youre in the US, right? I am in Germany and here not everybody was put on drugs. On my station about the half.
Yes, I am in the U.S. If you want to read my story you can go to CHAADA dot org, click on the message board link and look under personal stories for "Docs Blame "PPD" for the Horrors of Zoloft"
So half the people around you were put on drugs - are you talking about in the hospital or what? I am confused.
If that's the hospital then that is weird. If that's in the population that would be totally scary.
Hey, no, not in the population. That would be REALLY scary....In the two Psych hospitals I was in. One was for acute cases one was reha. I am critical and I take these arguments serious and this is why I want the governments to do serious studies on that issue and if that is true take action. I must say that I never experienced any of the horrible symptoms described there and I don't know anyone else who did.
I must also say that I was well informed about the side effects and that I followed the advice of my gyn, who is a homeopathist and natural herbalist doctor. Might sound weird and unbelievable for you, but it is true. I checked all alternatives but there was now other choice.
Yes there are many other choices. Omega 3 supplements are very effective, so is exercise. Good diet, rest, etc. Most cases of "PPD" are misdiagnosed thyroid problems or low blood sugar or a lack of sleep, rest, and good eating. Also a lack of support. The drugs are a nice copout for busy doctors who don't know better or who would rather get the drug company kickback than take time to really help someone.
I absolutely agree with you on the thyroid issue and on the support issue. Omega3 is helpful and so are Vitamin Bs and exercise. The clinic put me on such a programme (special diet and exercise) before I was put on meds. And they also checked my thyroid and scanned my inner organs, checked my blood to see if there was something wrong with sugar etc. I have had Hashimoto for some years and this was checked also. And I also finally got enough rest.
Brain scams do not show defective brains. They show what the brain is doing at that time. If you were feeling depressed there would be less activity in certain areas. However the SSRIs are like a chemical lobotomy, they shut down the frontal lobe. Did they do a follow up brain scan to show you the brain damage?
Rest is very important. One of the major side effects of the SSRIs is that they worsen thyroid problems and you should not be taking SSRIs if you have thyroid problems. This is on the label. Go to theroadback dot org if you want help with withdrawal Also I have found doctoryourself dot com very helpful.
OK, I have to respond to this. I am nursing TWO children at the same time while cosleeping. Did it not occur to you that cosleeping, the way that people have slept for all of human history, and breastfeeding, go together? I was never so tired as when I tried to stay up and be awake for my baby's feedings. My husband got sleep deprived feeding him formula. HE even had a car accident. Your comment should be amended to "when mom is trying to stay awake for nursing instead of cosleeping"
I also had a baby who never slept more than 4hrs & gave up naps at 6 mos. He was up at 6 am and didn't sleep until 11pm. When he was awake he was everywhere and always on top speed. He was still getting up again for a 1 am snack at a year!
I had 2 older children - one a teenager - which you will learn can be more exahusting than a baby.
My last was born 2 yrs later. I went 3 years on a handful of decent night's sleep.
I am going on 4 years of interrupted sleep, but it is far preferrable to have your sleep slightly interrupted to wake up enough to nurse and then try to go back to sleep, than it is to sit up for every feeding. If it weren't for cosleeping I would be insane. I actually spent the first 10 days of my son's life not sleeping period, and add that with Zoloft and you get hallucinations. Sleep deprivation is the worst thing besides drugs that you can do to your mind.
I am not knocking you for being tired, I am agreeing with you that being tired is behind a lot of PPD and pointing out another option that women who are going through this have, the one that saved me personally from having to wean my first child, and helped us get rest. I have two boys, and the 17 month old is an all-night nurser. He hardly nurses in the daytime but at night he loves his mommy milk and that is how he sleeps the best. I have been doing this with him since the day he was born.
I had summer babies who were sleeping all night by the time cold weather arrived. When my 'on all the time' kid was still nursing in cold weather, I moved to co-sleeping.
Now before you get on your high horse with me, I was BF mine during a time when it brought huge amounts of flack from people and literally had to fight for my right to do so. I knew No one who had BF, much less cosleeping.
With the 2nd child I did - I was too tired to do anything else after 6 mos.
OK, I just hate having people tell women they should stop breastfeeding and their PPD will go away. I wasn't trying to be on any high horse, just pointing out that the myth that breastfeeding makes you more exhausted than formula feeding is based on the idea that nobody cosleeps. I am sorry you felt so unsupported - I know what you mean, I have gotten flack for breastfeeding many times!
Hi Amy, on this I agree with you. Every woman has to be able to decide herself what she considers best for herself and her baby. Many do breast feeding and cosleeping others don't. Whatever they choose, it has to be accepted and nobody should feel bad because she makes it different than all others...
I am sorry if I gave the impression that I was encouraging anyone to stop nursing.
Far from it!
I meant to show that pregnant and nursing women should be given more care and support to help them stay rested and healthy.
They also need to understand that lack of sleep causes problems - but it doesn't mean you are crazy or need drugs the rest of your life. It means people need to be more supportive and caring.
A lot of people in the psych hospital or otherwise cannot recognize the side effects and when they question them they are told the side effects are the underlying condition. Other people may not want to discuss them because they are afraid of being punished or locked up. THink about how often people who were at one time stable have to raise their dose because of worsened condition or "relapse" - this is a sign of brain damage and worsening conditions caused by the drug.
The thread is still there. If you are on the message board go under the personal stories section. You can email me if you need more info. I will try to send you the link on youtube email, this comment section doesn't allow links.
The online PPD forums are very often guilty of promoting drugs to new moms. I have seen this first hand. Please go to uniteforlife dot org and for starters read the article on breastfeeding and drugs. It critiques the Thomas Hale push to use drugs in breastfeeding moms. You can also go to chaada dot org on the message board and do a search for pregnancy dangers.
They give recommendations of what helped them. But they should also inform about alternatives and side effects.Have you heard about Bert Hellingers method? I find it questionable and I wouldn't try it, but I accept the fact that some of my pals got cured from this. It interests me what you think about it?
Hi, yes they did other monitorings and CTs. Last one 2 weeks ago. I took my uncle with me who is a doctor too and reluctant against Ads. I have a comparison to what my brain looked like 7 years ago. During my depression there were some changes, now everything seems to have come back to normal. My uncle confirmed it. It also doesn't feel like I have a damage.
Thanks for the recommendation of the weaning-off site. I found they say pretty much the same as the German site I am going to, so it's a good one. I am taking it slowly with weaning off. I can't understand how people here do wean off "cold turkey" here and then wonder about the problems. I heard one of the school shooters also did that. Freaky...
All the pages on Hellinger I have are in German... Have you heard about natural progesterone supplement for depression? Another friend found this extremely effective. And as you have postpartum thyreoiditis you might want to check this out. Because many women with that have a lack of progesterone in the second half of their cyclus.
Oh, well my husband knows German so he might be able to read it. I have heard of progesterone supplementation however I am extremely skeptical of hormone replacement therapy. Progesterone is so closely associated in my mind with estrogen which can cause a lot of problems like breast cancer etc. when it's used as a drug. But I wouldn't mind learning about it. Maybe it's not as scary as it sounds.
Really? Wow, that is scary! I don't know about Ritalin and about the US system. Here in Germany it is also a problem to quickly get an appointment. I have my regular 4 week appointments but if I run out of meds in between I can just go to the reception. Nobody HAS to wean off cold turkey here and I don't wonder why people who do or have to do freak out!
The only problem with all that is that nobody really knows what a normal brain is. I find it amazing that you have been on the drugs for 7 years and not had damage or side effects. Good luck with the withdrawal. Let me know if you need anything.
I have not been on the drugs for seven years. The brain scan seven years ago was just out of interest. So they coincidentally had a messure what is normal for ME. I will send you the links by mail. Merry Christmas!!!
My brain scan 7 years ago was done by my uncle (who is against antidepressants, by the way...)
The scan lately was done by a completely different doctor from even a different country.
No conspiracy. I think that just everyone has to find his own way through this. And I know many people where these drugs helped, I know many who chose to do it without. Sometimes they used really wicked methods that I would never try, but it's okay for them. My way was taking Ads and doing various therapies.
It is a difficult issue. I myself was saved by antidepressants. They got me out of my deepest black hole and if Sertraline wouldn't exist, I wouldn't be here anymore. And there are also antidepressants that are safe during pregnancy. Sometimes it is better to take ADs during pregnancy than to freak out. Of course it wasn't the only thing that I needed to get cured of my PPD, there were a couple of therapies I had to go through. But I wouldn't condemn the meds by any means.
There are ADS that can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding if needed. I know many some women who had to do that. Of course you should do without if you can, like with every other medicine.
That is what the doctors tell you but they are NOT safe. Most of the people in the breastfeeding studies were actually not exclusively breastfeeding, most were doing mixed feedings. There were about 30 total people in the entire country tested for these studies. Not very reliable. Some of the infants in the study experienced seizures and COMA - you can read about this on UNITE's website. Babies exposed in pregnancy have died. The drugs are NOT safe.
To say that you were saved by antidepressants - are you saying that that subjective belief justifies other people being killed by them so you can feel better?
No I don't and it's not a subjective belief , it's a fact.
I am against one-sided reporting. It does help many people also most of the people I met who had to take them (and they were many as I was hospitalized) found some relief from them. But it appears to me that many doctors just go like : "Take some pills and youre going to be fine, now you go".
Everyone in a psych hospital is on drugs. Many against their will. The people I saw were not relieved at all. You may want to check out breggin dot com. A good book is Toxic psychiatry. Go read it.
Hi gmf, I am not a tablet pope and I agree that it needs more than just pills to recover. Tablets didn't cure me, they helped me to get back on the right path. Except of the weed, I did all of the things that you said and I did a cognitive behavioural therapy. THAT actually cured me. But without the pills I wasn't able to do any of this.
I want to add that I tried weed before I got depressed and it caused an anxiety attack.
If it works out for you that is just fine.
The danger about weed is that if you buy it in the streets it is stretched. We recently had a lot of cases here were people died from plumb poisoning after smoking a joint. The dealer had used plumb to cheat on the weight. Also they use to drop LSD on it to make you addicted. Please only smoke stuff that was grown by yourself or by someone you trust!
Interesting... here in the US you would be considered a criminal and lowlife for using weed, but for using the prescriptions you are considered a saint for getting help. Mainly because that is what the drug companies want. Bill Maher said the drug companies do not want to have to compete with pot, nobody would buy Prozac if they did. But I am someone who has never used pot, so... I can't talk.
Cranny71... here in the US there is a bill called the MOTHERS Act which is going to force screen, encourage drugs (maybe force) and force hospitalization on pregnant women and new moms. It's disgusting that our government wants to do this to us. DO they do that to you in Germany? (see the link to the petition in the about section / description of the video).
Hi Amy, no, they don't do that here. I don't know about this Act, but if it is like you say, it is pretty disgusting and bad. And I have heard that smoking pot is legal in California. It is not really legal here, unless you have a small amount with you. It is horrible what street drugs can do to you, even if it is "just weed". I know a friend and another somebody here on youtube who used clean pot and it helped. With me it only caused panic...So I suppose it's not good for my body-system...
With less than 5% of the world's population the U.S. consumes 48% of the world's prescription drugs today. This is one important chapter in a long, sad story but it's a nice job of presentation.

The point is do want the government screening your children or mothers and mothers to be for a possible outcome in the future. Do you want the government telling you that you have to take a DRUG! Stop the Mother's Act please and teen screen.........
geminitribe 3 years ago 3
First of all geminitribe, your comment makes no sense. Proofread before you post. The only point I can begin to comprehend from what you've written is that you seem to believe the government is going to try to force medication on people, which is absurd. Both the Mother's Act and Teen Screen are beneficial programs meant to help people learn about and deal with depression. They don't FORCE medication on people. This video (and your beliefs) are misleading and wrong.

I would be dead WITHOUT antidepressives!
Jetelinka 3 years ago
They are not called antidepressives, they are antidepressants, the opposite of a depressant. Depressant / stimulant = opposites. They are not proven to improve or treat depression in fact, the only thing they have ever been proven to do is cause depression and psychosis. However, nobody is trying to tell you not to take them, we are simply promoting awareness of what can happen. So if you want to risk your own life and the lives of those around you, feel free. It's still legal to take them.
amyphilo 3 years ago
sorry I misspoke there are other things they have been proven to do, such as cause death via toxicity etc etc etc. Sorry.
amyphilo 3 years ago
Well, then I gently ask you to give me some advice what to do with my depression, which I´ve been suffering since I was 5 years old, without medication. Without it I usually couldn´t go to school or even read or anything. With them I can do everything including travelling, going out with my friedns and other thing. I would really appreciate your opinion. (Sorry for my English, I´m not native speaker). And children, I know I will never have them, because they could have the deprresion too.
Jetelinka 3 years ago
I need to correct something I wrote in the intro to this video about pregnancy, the risk of preterm birth is actually five times higher on the drugs than when not on the drugs, not two times higher. Sorry.

Cranny71 4 years ago
The same is true of adults. The only reason people are admitting the suicide in children is because parents have been outraged and demanding answers. But if more adults are drugged then they are less likely to notice the truth.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Yes you are right, everybody should be more cared about. And no, of course it doesnt justify the killing of others that I feel better. But what question is that? I don't believe that it was only the meds that killed. That would be too easy and reality is more complex. They all had mental problems and all that happened was somebody giving them drugs.
Cranny71 4 years ago
You can actually put all drugs into question.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Yes, you can question all drugs. However that does not mean that antidepressants can be lumped in with all drugs or considered equally benign. My dad also had a manic reaction to an antibiotic. Sometimes people have drug interactions or interactions with other toxins in their diet or environment and sometimes it is the fault of one drug alone.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Also cortisone is a steroid and it raises your cortisol which is why the suicidal reaction occurred. Prozac and SSRIs CAUSE, not correct mental problems. Even the short term studies show this but long term studies do as well. Most people who felt better at the beginning had relapsed within 10 months. The drugs raise your cortisol and impair serotonin metabolism. Google serotonin syndrome or read about it on UNITE's website.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I also experienced an episode following taking tylenol. Also sometimes the antidepressants or artificial sweeteners are mixed in with medicines which is behind the reaction because things like aspartame and splenda are actually SSRIs too.
amyphilo 4 years ago
OK well what about people who took the drugs for migraines or back acne going on a shooting rampage or committing suicide.
The studies clearly show that the drugs make most people worse, not better. If you are lucky enough not to experience the horrible side effects then consider yourself very fortunate. As you are withdrawing you should check out theroadback dot org for information on how to taper safely or tapersafely dot org
amyphilo 4 years ago
Go to ssristories dot com or uniteforlife dot org
I do not know of a single school shooting that did not involve antidepressants.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I know these stories and I am not denying the problems that some people have from this. Doctors should inform better, offer alternative ways additional talk therapies (etc.) and take more care about their patients than just feeding them.
Cranny71 4 years ago
At what point do we admit that the risk outweighs any supposed benefit and get people real help, ban these poisons and save lives? There ARE safe ways to help people that do not put anyone at risk like these. Because of the pharma profits you and I are at risk every time we leave our homes.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Nobody has found the clue of wisdom yet. And things work different on everybody. It is a fact that antidepressants work for many people, but only if they get additional support. I don't have this only from books, I just know so many who had to take them once in their life. But I AM critical, cause there are other ways that are not used often enough.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Not really sure what that means that nobody has found the clue of wisdom yet... "Having to take them" is a total copout - nothing could be more dangerous for a depressed person than giving someone a pill that doubles (at minimum) the risk of suicide and poses a physical threat to their health and if they are a breastfeeding or pregnant mom, the health of their child. Not to mention that homicidal thinking is on the label for many drugs.
amyphilo 4 years ago
And in the end I want to say, doctors will have a good eye on alternatives, like my doctor has. She offers Qi Gong, accupuncture and progressive relaxation (Jacobsen). I did cognitive behavioural therapy, which cured me. I am not a tablet pope. I support a ppd online group and we give infos about every method, classic and holistic treatments. Everybody is different.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Sorry I wanted to say" I hope, docters soon will have a good eye..."
And yes, I consider myself fortunate because I was and I still am under a great care of responsible people. I don't know if you have experienced Depression. It is hell. Maybe we also have a bit different systems. Youre in the US, right? I am in Germany and here not everybody was put on drugs. On my station about the half.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Yes, I am in the U.S. If you want to read my story you can go to CHAADA dot org, click on the message board link and look under personal stories for "Docs Blame "PPD" for the Horrors of Zoloft"
So half the people around you were put on drugs - are you talking about in the hospital or what? I am confused.
If that's the hospital then that is weird. If that's in the population that would be totally scary.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Hey, no, not in the population. That would be REALLY scary....In the two Psych hospitals I was in. One was for acute cases one was reha. I am critical and I take these arguments serious and this is why I want the governments to do serious studies on that issue and if that is true take action. I must say that I never experienced any of the horrible symptoms described there and I don't know anyone else who did.
Cranny71 4 years ago
I must also say that I was well informed about the side effects and that I followed the advice of my gyn, who is a homeopathist and natural herbalist doctor. Might sound weird and unbelievable for you, but it is true. I checked all alternatives but there was now other choice.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Yes there are many other choices. Omega 3 supplements are very effective, so is exercise. Good diet, rest, etc. Most cases of "PPD" are misdiagnosed thyroid problems or low blood sugar or a lack of sleep, rest, and good eating. Also a lack of support. The drugs are a nice copout for busy doctors who don't know better or who would rather get the drug company kickback than take time to really help someone.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I absolutely agree with you on the thyroid issue and on the support issue. Omega3 is helpful and so are Vitamin Bs and exercise. The clinic put me on such a programme (special diet and exercise) before I was put on meds. And they also checked my thyroid and scanned my inner organs, checked my blood to see if there was something wrong with sugar etc. I have had Hashimoto for some years and this was checked also. And I also finally got enough rest.
Cranny71 4 years ago
On a brain scan they discovered my orbito frontal cortex wasn't working right. And this is an indicator that an SSRI might help. And it did.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Brain scams do not show defective brains. They show what the brain is doing at that time. If you were feeling depressed there would be less activity in certain areas. However the SSRIs are like a chemical lobotomy, they shut down the frontal lobe. Did they do a follow up brain scan to show you the brain damage?
amyphilo 4 years ago
I wanted to clarify I meant a follow up brain scan to show the damage from the SSRI.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Rest is very important. One of the major side effects of the SSRIs is that they worsen thyroid problems and you should not be taking SSRIs if you have thyroid problems. This is on the label. Go to theroadback dot org if you want help with withdrawal Also I have found doctoryourself dot com very helpful.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I believe rest of the most overlooked issue and is the cause of most PPD.
This increases when children are close in age and mom is nursing.
gmfutube 4 years ago
OK, I have to respond to this. I am nursing TWO children at the same time while cosleeping. Did it not occur to you that cosleeping, the way that people have slept for all of human history, and breastfeeding, go together? I was never so tired as when I tried to stay up and be awake for my baby's feedings. My husband got sleep deprived feeding him formula. HE even had a car accident. Your comment should be amended to "when mom is trying to stay awake for nursing instead of cosleeping"
amyphilo 4 years ago
... or when the parents are trying to stay awake and bottle feed instead of cosleeping / night nursing.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I also had a baby who never slept more than 4hrs & gave up naps at 6 mos. He was up at 6 am and didn't sleep until 11pm. When he was awake he was everywhere and always on top speed. He was still getting up again for a 1 am snack at a year!
I had 2 older children - one a teenager - which you will learn can be more exahusting than a baby.
My last was born 2 yrs later. I went 3 years on a handful of decent night's sleep.
Walk a mile in my shoes honey.
gmfutube 4 years ago
I am going on 4 years of interrupted sleep, but it is far preferrable to have your sleep slightly interrupted to wake up enough to nurse and then try to go back to sleep, than it is to sit up for every feeding. If it weren't for cosleeping I would be insane. I actually spent the first 10 days of my son's life not sleeping period, and add that with Zoloft and you get hallucinations. Sleep deprivation is the worst thing besides drugs that you can do to your mind.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I am not knocking you for being tired, I am agreeing with you that being tired is behind a lot of PPD and pointing out another option that women who are going through this have, the one that saved me personally from having to wean my first child, and helped us get rest. I have two boys, and the 17 month old is an all-night nurser. He hardly nurses in the daytime but at night he loves his mommy milk and that is how he sleeps the best. I have been doing this with him since the day he was born.
amyphilo 4 years ago
You do make a good point about co-sleeping.
I only discoverd it by accident, lol.
I had summer babies who were sleeping all night by the time cold weather arrived. When my 'on all the time' kid was still nursing in cold weather, I moved to co-sleeping.
gmfutube 4 years ago
Now before you get on your high horse with me, I was BF mine during a time when it brought huge amounts of flack from people and literally had to fight for my right to do so. I knew No one who had BF, much less cosleeping.
With the 2nd child I did - I was too tired to do anything else after 6 mos.
gmfutube 4 years ago
OK, I just hate having people tell women they should stop breastfeeding and their PPD will go away. I wasn't trying to be on any high horse, just pointing out that the myth that breastfeeding makes you more exhausted than formula feeding is based on the idea that nobody cosleeps. I am sorry you felt so unsupported - I know what you mean, I have gotten flack for breastfeeding many times!
amyphilo 4 years ago
Hi Amy, on this I agree with you. Every woman has to be able to decide herself what she considers best for herself and her baby. Many do breast feeding and cosleeping others don't. Whatever they choose, it has to be accepted and nobody should feel bad because she makes it different than all others...
Cranny71 4 years ago
OK.
It means people need to be more supportive and caring.
gmfutube 4 years ago
Even my naturopathic & homeopathic doctor prescribes SSRIs and SNRIs like they are candy. Everyone has been misled.
amyphilo 4 years ago
A lot of people in the psych hospital or otherwise cannot recognize the side effects and when they question them they are told the side effects are the underlying condition. Other people may not want to discuss them because they are afraid of being punished or locked up. THink about how often people who were at one time stable have to raise their dose because of worsened condition or "relapse" - this is a sign of brain damage and worsening conditions caused by the drug.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I'd be very surprised if anyone who took these drugs actually had none of the side effects or long term chronic diseases they can cause.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Besides, I couldn't find your story on that page. Has the thread been removed? Have you been on Zoloft yourself?
Cranny71 4 years ago
The thread is still there. If you are on the message board go under the personal stories section. You can email me if you need more info. I will try to send you the link on youtube email, this comment section doesn't allow links.

I was wondering where you were finding a doctor that recognized that these pills should (at best) be a temp relief while life-style is modified.
The answer is that you aren't in the US.
Medical coverage here will get you the pills, but not cover the cost of meaningful counseling and behavior modification.
gmfutube 4 years ago
The online PPD forums are very often guilty of promoting drugs to new moms. I have seen this first hand. Please go to uniteforlife dot org and for starters read the article on breastfeeding and drugs. It critiques the Thomas Hale push to use drugs in breastfeeding moms. You can also go to chaada dot org on the message board and do a search for pregnancy dangers.
amyphilo 4 years ago
They give recommendations of what helped them. But they should also inform about alternatives and side effects.Have you heard about Bert Hellingers method? I find it questionable and I wouldn't try it, but I accept the fact that some of my pals got cured from this. It interests me what you think about it?
Cranny71 4 years ago
I haven't heard of that. I'll have to check it out. You can send me a link over email or I might have a chance to google it.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Hi, yes they did other monitorings and CTs. Last one 2 weeks ago. I took my uncle with me who is a doctor too and reluctant against Ads. I have a comparison to what my brain looked like 7 years ago. During my depression there were some changes, now everything seems to have come back to normal. My uncle confirmed it. It also doesn't feel like I have a damage.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Thanks for the recommendation of the weaning-off site. I found they say pretty much the same as the German site I am going to, so it's a good one. I am taking it slowly with weaning off. I can't understand how people here do wean off "cold turkey" here and then wonder about the problems. I heard one of the school shooters also did that. Freaky...
Also I take Vitamin Bs.
Cranny71 4 years ago
All the pages on Hellinger I have are in German... Have you heard about natural progesterone supplement for depression? Another friend found this extremely effective. And as you have postpartum thyreoiditis you might want to check this out. Because many women with that have a lack of progesterone in the second half of their cyclus.
Cranny71 4 years ago
Oh, well my husband knows German so he might be able to read it. I have heard of progesterone supplementation however I am extremely skeptical of hormone replacement therapy. Progesterone is so closely associated in my mind with estrogen which can cause a lot of problems like breast cancer etc. when it's used as a drug. But I wouldn't mind learning about it. Maybe it's not as scary as it sounds.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Sometimes here in the good ole USA, stopping meds 'cold turkey' is not a deliberate choice.
Patient has been on meds for a while and they are become less effective.
Patient fails to make Rx renewal appointment 4 weeks ahead of time.
Meds can't be re-filled.
HMO says it will be weeks before patient can get an appointment for a new Rx.
gmfutube 4 years ago
Good point. This happened to a relative of mine and she had to cold turkey off Ritalin after being on it for about 14 years.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Cranny71 4 years ago
The only problem with all that is that nobody really knows what a normal brain is. I find it amazing that you have been on the drugs for 7 years and not had damage or side effects. Good luck with the withdrawal. Let me know if you need anything.
amyphilo 4 years ago
I have not been on the drugs for seven years. The brain scan seven years ago was just out of interest. So they coincidentally had a messure what is normal for ME. I will send you the links by mail. Merry Christmas!!!
Cranny71 4 years ago
That will happen when pigs fly.
The issue here is that our government is deliberately looking to Increase the number of people on these drugs.
gmfutube 4 years ago
My brain scan 7 years ago was done by my uncle (who is against antidepressants, by the way...)
The scan lately was done by a completely different doctor from even a different country.
No conspiracy. I think that just everyone has to find his own way through this. And I know many people where these drugs helped, I know many who chose to do it without. Sometimes they used really wicked methods that I would never try, but it's okay for them. My way was taking Ads and doing various therapies.
Cranny71 4 years ago
It is a difficult issue. I myself was saved by antidepressants. They got me out of my deepest black hole and if Sertraline wouldn't exist, I wouldn't be here anymore. And there are also antidepressants that are safe during pregnancy. Sometimes it is better to take ADs during pregnancy than to freak out. Of course it wasn't the only thing that I needed to get cured of my PPD, there were a couple of therapies I had to go through. But I wouldn't condemn the meds by any means.
Cranny71 4 years ago
There is no such thing as a safe antidepressant, especially during pregnancy.
amyphilo 4 years ago
There are ADS that can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding if needed. I know many some women who had to do that. Of course you should do without if you can, like with every other medicine.
Cranny71 4 years ago
That is what the doctors tell you but they are NOT safe. Most of the people in the breastfeeding studies were actually not exclusively breastfeeding, most were doing mixed feedings. There were about 30 total people in the entire country tested for these studies. Not very reliable. Some of the infants in the study experienced seizures and COMA - you can read about this on UNITE's website. Babies exposed in pregnancy have died. The drugs are NOT safe.
amyphilo 4 years ago
To say that you were saved by antidepressants - are you saying that that subjective belief justifies other people being killed by them so you can feel better?
amyphilo 4 years ago
No I don't and it's not a subjective belief , it's a fact.
I am against one-sided reporting. It does help many people also most of the people I met who had to take them (and they were many as I was hospitalized) found some relief from them. But it appears to me that many doctors just go like : "Take some pills and youre going to be fine, now you go".
Cranny71 4 years ago
Everyone in a psych hospital is on drugs. Many against their will. The people I saw were not relieved at all. You may want to check out breggin dot com. A good book is Toxic psychiatry. Go read it.
amyphilo 4 years ago
The meds do provide relief...in the begining.
I too used to think they were a miracle. Find me anyone who thinks they are so great after 10 years. You can't.
The underlying cause of depression is STRESS.
Change your lifestyle
Change your diet
Get more exercise
Smoke some weed (which has NEVER killed anyone, or caused them to be violent or suicidal)
Any of these are better than these pills.
gmfutube 4 years ago
Hi gmf, I am not a tablet pope and I agree that it needs more than just pills to recover. Tablets didn't cure me, they helped me to get back on the right path. Except of the weed, I did all of the things that you said and I did a cognitive behavioural therapy. THAT actually cured me. But without the pills I wasn't able to do any of this.
Cranny71 4 years ago
I want to add that I tried weed before I got depressed and it caused an anxiety attack.
If it works out for you that is just fine.
The danger about weed is that if you buy it in the streets it is stretched. We recently had a lot of cases here were people died from plumb poisoning after smoking a joint. The dealer had used plumb to cheat on the weight. Also they use to drop LSD on it to make you addicted. Please only smoke stuff that was grown by yourself or by someone you trust!
Cranny71 4 years ago
Interesting... here in the US you would be considered a criminal and lowlife for using weed, but for using the prescriptions you are considered a saint for getting help. Mainly because that is what the drug companies want. Bill Maher said the drug companies do not want to have to compete with pot, nobody would buy Prozac if they did. But I am someone who has never used pot, so... I can't talk.
amyphilo 4 years ago
Cranny71... here in the US there is a bill called the MOTHERS Act which is going to force screen, encourage drugs (maybe force) and force hospitalization on pregnant women and new moms. It's disgusting that our government wants to do this to us. DO they do that to you in Germany? (see the link to the petition in the about section / description of the video).
amyphilo 4 years ago
Hi Amy, no, they don't do that here. I don't know about this Act, but if it is like you say, it is pretty disgusting and bad. And I have heard that smoking pot is legal in California. It is not really legal here, unless you have a small amount with you. It is horrible what street drugs can do to you, even if it is "just weed". I know a friend and another somebody here on youtube who used clean pot and it helped. With me it only caused panic...So I suppose it's not good for my body-system...
Cranny71 4 years ago
With less than 5% of the world's population the U.S. consumes 48% of the world's prescription drugs today. This is one important chapter in a long, sad story but it's a nice job of presentation.
