  • If I recall the Paul Daniels version, it was done to different music, The bit at the end has a sample saying "Frankensteins Monster" over buzzing and clockwork noises.

  • id say top notch performance.. world class illusion.

  • Haha 10/10 for originality. I really wasn't expecting the final head illusion, that was really really neat.

Just as some constructive criticism (from a fellow magician) I'd rethink the `legs` at around 47 seconds. Plus there was a tiny tiny flash of white. ;)

Other than that. astonishing and amazing!

  • impressive! love it!

  • WOW!!!

  • I don't get it. Where's the illusion? All I see is a robot ripping off a dude's head.

  • I remember seeing this actual show and I thought it was brilliant. Too many programmes revealing how illusions are done has ruined the art of illusion completely. So there is nothing to Mystify children or adults. For me that is sad when modern childhood has little thats magical about it. Also isn't video games in fact an illusion often created by a coomputer? Wheres the art in that?

  • Nice Robot, but he's little scary :o xD

  • unbrilliant. Completely cheating. obvious edit at 0:14 note the scientist's hands.

The scientist must hide the robot from the audience at some point, and that point really would show his skill, instead we see a camera cut. Nice misdirection, nice suprise, but when you get caught cheating with editing it takes away everything.

  • @jeffab01 Futhermore, if you look at other videos on YT of Al Carthy he starts the act placing the body on the table - directly where this one is edited! ... Still love this act though!

  • @jeffab01 LOL!

  • cool

  • wow, didnt the mad scientist have very low elbows..and er..a wax looking head!

  • nice robot you got there

  • This never even happened.

  • I'm not surprised you will delete comments explaining how the trick was done. Otherwise everybody over the age of 6 who watched this would post saying how it was done.

  • @bdf2718 You would think anyone over age of 6 would read and understand "I respect the art of magic/illusions and as such any comments revealing methods to this effect will not be approved." In video info.

Therefore I am suprised you complain.

  • @MavisRileyJunior

I did not complain. I was remarking on the fact that this illusion was so simple there was no need to protect it.

In fact it was so simple I hesitate to label it "illusion" and think "unentertaining performance art" a better description.

  • @bdf2718 Well Al carthy (the magician in this vid) has entertained for many years doing this trick,it is 30 years old and will stand the test of time ,you are entitled to your opinion but I will still remove "spoilers" as I have done with your recent post.

  • @MavisRileyJunior

Yeah, Paul Daniels usually included at least one unentertaining non-illusion guest artist in each of his shows. My guess is he wanted somebody who was really bad to make himself look good. Daniels wasn't as good as David Nixon or even Ali Bongo. Penn and Teller blow him out of the water (and often explain how their illusions work).

  • @MavisRileyJunior

i'm disapointed that some a-hole (bdf2718) has to go around shouting his mouth off just because hes been shown something- I doubt he'd have the subtley to come up with a trick anything like it himself.

Its a super illusion, and very creative.

  • @MavisRileyJunior In my opinion, it does not matter if we know how the trick was done. They had to practice the movements to make it credible. That's the amazing part. But look at the scientist face and arms! I'm an open source fan, I love science and watch the special effects makingofs and how the tricks are done. But I still respect the programmers (I'm one of them), admire the Universe, like to watch movies and respect the magician, specially those who bust the impostors.

  • @bdf2718

    Hello,

After reading your comment, I am happy to see every night , when performing in HURRICANE the magic show of and with Hans KLOK on tour in Holland, that there are no children of 6 years old (or even older)

The "normal" audience is still surprised by the end of the act. If not, I would have been fired by the production :)

  • @ALCARTHY

Great performance, and I think this is a brave choice to make the illusion scary. Thank you for this professional work.

  • @bdf2718

    AL CARTHY

  • Not too difficult to figure out, but a cool trick.

  • nice (but i really hate the frankenstein story)

  • i saw him last night

  • I remember seeing this as a young kid and it scared the hell out of me. I actually had nightmares about it. As an adult, I can now see that the scariest thing on the show was Paul Daniels' wig.

  • Genius XD If you know how it works, still genius!

  • This was done in the eightees, very advanced for its time, and no there were no camera "Tricks" or angles involved, it was pure illusion.

"I cant work out how this is done so it must be camera tricks" Why do people say that?

  • I would like to know how the guy in the black outfit leans forward so far without falling over. I think there is a shorter guy in the white outfit and his head was below the shoulders of a costume.

  • the scientists arms r huge

  • i bet you could scare a tiger away with those moves and look!! lol

  • two very well programmed robots could do the same trick...

but still very incredible. I'd be interested to see how they did it.

  • Comment removed

  • yeah I think there was camera trick or two.

  • wow, compliments for the "robot"

    the movements were awesome

  • @d4m4s74 People stop with the "camera tricks" comments. Its silly. There are none.

  • @MavisRileyJunior

did I say anything about camera tricks?

my post was deleted so I can't read back.

Anyway, I checked it again, and I didn't see any camera tricks, but because this is on TV there are (quite obviously) cuts. (probably picked by the director, not the magician), and I think the zoom on the robot did hide a secret (one you probably don't see in the audience, but visible when playing it back a few times on your computer)

  • @MavisRileyJunior Dis act has nothing to do with some camera tricks.

Have seen this act live a few day's ago. believe me!

  • @MavisRileyJunior I agree the use of a camera trick would be short sighted

  • I saw it the first time and was incredible impressed! Overly impressed! After a few more times of analyzing I know how they did it. No robots involved I can assure you, but probably ONE cheating camera edit.

  • its actually a robot. solved easy

  • I asked my sister about this and she seemed to remember that body parts were brought onto the stage and assembled so they could be seen, when the body was complete the assembler then fell apart.

Has anyone ever seen that version?

    Very clever

  • man that was scary

  • "the actual scientist is a robot "

Dude, it's a short guy in the suit-DUH!

  • wow.....tell me its a camera trick....

  • his shoes change....

  • Kevin James does it better.

  • Not aware Kevin James performing this.

  • @MavisRileyJunior He performed a similar trick, though... he assembled a Charlie Chaplin doll and had it come to life.

  • This act stormed the Blackpool Magicians Convention in the early 1980's.............I have NEVER seen an illusion act leave an audience of magicians so completely gobsmacked.

    SHEER BRILLIANCE!

  • the actual scientist is a robot

  • Amazing act. German i think

  • Ah that's very good, I've it figured out but on first viewing i was impressed!

  • I like the bit at 2:50 when Brad Pitt does that sword jumping thing.......oh wait hang on, that was Troy wasnt it?

  • Woah that was asome

Realmente espetacular!

  • How the heck did they do that???!

    :D oh man.

  • shite

  • I believe that it is SHIT without an E :)

  • Great Act! This act was also featured as part of the "Richiardi World Of Occult & Illusion" show at the Felt Forum in New York City (Madison Square Garden) in the mid-late 70's. - Very theatrical and very eerie! - Thanks for posting this!

  • Hi! Which is the initial song of the video? Thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • 'Metropolis' by Giorgio Moroder.

  • that was the most interesting thing i have seen all in a couple of months XD

  • that's spooky

  • I love it.

  • how the hell???

  • thats old ... seen it done 78

  • Jean Claude Hasle - You have the respect of everyone in the world of magic . A world class speciality that is unique - Continued success with your tour with Hans Klok . Did you present the act with a different playback a few years ago ? Your make up is still as scary and impressive also . totally unrecognisable from the character out of your costume !!

  • Thank you for the nice compliment!

I worked on different musics and have again a new music for the "Hans Klok and friends" tour

  • Hello ukdeejay,

Sorry I scared you when you were a child and again on Youtube..

And I continue (on tour with Hans Klok)

but less 80s mr chopper :)

  • Well that was weird. Very 80s. Glad to see prosthetics have come on somewhat since then. I think it's the hair that used to make them stand out.

  • Yup, THIS is the guest magician sequence that gave me nightmares the night after watching it on telly as a kid. A part of me hoped I'd never see it again...!!

  • it's not about figuring the illusion out, it's a an art, this is a very unique performance. it obviously took lotsof practice

  • i love it when people have nothing better to do than sit around and critique someone's craft. I'd love to see Quelorepario do something half this awesome. So before you're quick to judge someone maybe you should go out and get a life.

  • that is actually a person not a robot

  • Ending Ftw

  • Interestin good. diferent.

  • Wow! this is so cool, It's very very good how he walk and walk upstairs as a robot

  • In ten years kids seeing this gonna say "heh, my Asimo is faster than that one"

  • I saw him yesterday (he's on tour with Hans Klok).

    Very exciting and brilliant!

  • Saw him yesterday (24.05.2009) in Mannheim;

he's on Tour with Hans Klok.

I was sitting in row two, so I could see a lot, but even at the short distance this guy looks like some plastic toy and it's very hard to recognize that he is human.

OK, I know he is, because at the end of the show he came back for the applause and then I could see that he is a real person.

Somehow weird, but 100% worth watching.

  • ok so most of that was incredibly obvious but i'm not certain about how the guy got his head inside of the coat before the man in black ripped off the fake one.

  • thats great. i remember watching this as a kid.

  • is the creature the guy from Sheilds and Yarnell?

  • A bit too obvious how all the (only!) three effects work, and the routine moves glacially slowly... but original.

  • hey houdini, suggest a better routine

  • He's behind you...

  • I figured out most of the trick but the last part stumped me! I must say the guy playing the robot is a BRILLIANT actor!!

  • Superb :-)

I love the idea and the way it's performed ! And it doesn't matter if one can guess a few things when watching the video again: the first time, the effects come as true and strong surprises !

Excellent job, very entertainig, very good magic :-))

  • it easy if u watch carefully.... i know how to do that....

  • i figured it out i think and have to ask why they cut away around :15? that's a crucial spot. aside from that, very clever and cool.

  • Hello,

Most of the time tv shows cut out seconds and in some cases, minutes!

The stage version of the act is 6min 30. Too long for a TV show where ever in the world(never for a singer, only for visual acts!)

    Al Carthy

  • Excuse me Mr.Carthy. I was just wondering if you could tell me how your assistant leaned so far. If you feel that this a magic secret and you do not want to reveal it that is fine.

    Ediz

  • His reply would be a secret and so maybe you should message him via his profile instead.

  • Ok thank you!

  • im guessing the same way as michael jackson does it, clips on the floor that slide into the shoes as you step into them

  • @joshan55555 It looks similar to the technique Michael Jackson (and later Alien Ant Farm) used in the video for "Smooth Criminal" if you care to look up how that is done.

  • I swear if i seen that robot in my crib at night.i sprint out my house. But damn that was tricky as hell.

  • when the camera cut the robots face was realisticly looking not a mask?

  • Hello,

No it is not a mask, but make up

  • no words to that...

    Perfectly well done (:

  • awesome

  • WOAH! Awesome.

  • HAHA NICE. i figured it out after my first view...but this is definitely a very creative illusion. the ending was a very nice touch because i wasn't expecting that.

  • Brilliant

I saw this as a young lad many years ago and it really scared the cr_p out of me

    Happy viewing !!

  • Wow. This is great!

  • *_* what the fucking fuck?

  • Amazing

  • freakin freky o0 shud make it with the song "black would be white"

  • Incredible - I remember seeing this on a variety show in the 1970s and my father telling me he had seen the same illusion when he was a boy - apparently the secret was sold or passed on. Quite eerie, and very original!

  • I guess as I now run a special effects / illusion building company, thank's to variety act's like this I owe it to and will forgive the BBC this time for giving me a direction in life .........

  • Are they a couple do you think ?

If they are, Im glad they met as they would have spoiled two other couples....... lol

  • Saw this originally on the Paul Daniels show years before this particular broadcast, I was a kid of about 12 and it scared me shitless and I couldn't sleep for weeks after, had nightmares and everything, fucking BBC, Im gonna sue the bastards and I refuse to pay my TV license from now on because of the traumatic stress caused to me in childhood.

Take me to court and I will drag all of my childhood trauma up, PS: I have a friend who's a county court judge.

So nah nah nah nah nah, I will win.

  • I guess you supressed these momories so far that you forgot you'd already posted 2 weeks ago! lol.

  • i hate when fucking losers like moviebuff38 post made up shit like that....yea when i was working on the Manhattan project i learned quite a few things BLA BLA BULL FUCKING SHIT

  • You're a moron.

  • I was delighted to find this video of Al Carthy and his mechanical man as I have been searching for info about this act for years! I worked backstage at Halifax Palace Theatre in the fifties and they appeared there with great success. I now give talks to clubs and societies about my days working in variety theatres and usually mention this amazing act. Thank you for bringing back some happy memories.

  • I watched this on Paul Daniels years ago as a small child, Im claiming compensation as it scared the shit out of me and I have had nightmares ever since.

  • illusion?? not that good. What's so special?

  • I watched this when it was on TV years ago!

    Thanks for posting this up!

  • yeah.... i read your post about this and i finally decided to check it out...=]

  • wow. the ending really surprised me. thought i knew how it was done--guess not now.

  • nice one

  • Absolutely amazing. Magicians fascinate me and you have an awesome channel. I've just subscribed, hopefully I can get some hints if I wish to try my hand at this. Five stars!

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow amazing really enjoyed this

  • that robots face is bloody scarey, looks like lon chaney in the phantom of the opera

  • Due to one braindead trying to post a spoiler, comments are now subject to approval.

  • The video is not a Paul Daniels show, but was taken during a John Fisher production made in London called "Magic Comedy Strip"

    Jean Claude Haslé (Al Carthy)

  • This is true. But it makes it easier for people to associate if tagged Paul Daniels.

  • Hello,OK and yes I do understand!

  • Nice to have the creator comment.Thanks.

  • very welcome, a pleasure

  • rad25, I did the Paul Daniel shows 3 times and also different John Fisher productions. And yes with a different soundtrack, but it was still me!

    Al Carthy

  • I've seen the same illusion on the same show but with a different soundtrack - much much darker and creepier one...

  • Wow, that's the weirdest thing I've seen. Kevin James looks like a kids magician compared to that.

  • great illusion*****
