@ajay999999 he began balding very young. When he retreated to Big Sur in the mid 60s and started doing folk/anti-war songs, he quit wearing his toupee. His career stalled out and he went back to the lounge scene and began wearing the toupee again.

Watch this amazing man give his last performance. There was no time for rehearsal, but these people knew each other so well that they knew what to do. Darin was seriously ill here; at about 3:07 or so, he had to shake his hand to get the circulation back in his arm, then he immediately played the piano. He required oxygen after this performance, but you'd never know it. He was one of the very greatest. RIP, Bobby.

Elton's always been one of my fav's- he is a virtuoso song writer and pianist. I liked both songs he and Shania sang-"You're the One" and "The Way You Look Tonight" that you referenced. Shania's one of my sister-in-law's favorite singers. She seems very sweet. It would be tough losing both parents at the same time in a car wreck.

Yes from Windsor Ontario. She, like BD, had a rather difficult childhood. Very poor also, and her parents were killed in a car accident. She used to help care for all her brothers and sisters. She does a duet with Elton John in concert, the video is on youtube. Another one I adore was Selena, you saw in the movie how she was not taken seriously by all the macho male dj's and music supporters. Talk about a tragic loss. She was awesome.

124bjw, they pulled the same thing on Shania Twain who I am a big fan of. She is one of the first female country stars who wrote her own songs and music. The good ole boys in Nashville dissed her completely. It was the fans who refused to let them determine who had talent and who didn't.
One other thing I wanted to mention. I have always been curious about the 3 backup singers in his last shows so I did research. They are awesome and added so much to the performances. Their name which I think is rather prophetic.......The Last Chapter.
Sammy Davis Jr who was known as Mr. Entertainment once said when commenting on Bobby Darin's talent, "that he would never follow Bobby Darin on stage". This was truly a testament to Bobby Darin's talents as a performer. Lost him way to soon.
He once cancelled an appearance on the Jackie Gleason show because they tried to censor his Simple Song of Freedom that he wrote and was going to perform. They wanted him to change some of the words. Can you imagine that today??? He told them to shove it, refused to perform, and then sued the producers of the show. He said that he didn't care if he ever did another tv show, he was going to make a point. That takes guts.
Bobby was going thru a tremendous amount of emotional turmoil in his last years. I think it was just too much for him. When RFK died, it rocked him to his core. He sold all his stuff and went and lived an isolated life for awhile. Then he finds out his older sister is really his mother. He was actually going to run for political office when that revelation came along. I really admire him for his political outspokenness, he did not care if it cost him contracts, he spoke his mind.
People like Bobby Darin only come along once in a shooting star, like Elvis, or Sinatra, or Michael Jackson. Unique talents at their time who endure forever because of their specialness. I still love listening to Bobby Darin and even appreciate him more as I got older. What a loss - it always seems the really special ones leave too soon. But at least we have their music, right??
People, you have to stop comparing Darin with Sinatra. It's not about who's got the better voice, it's about style. I think it's also about who's the better entertainer. If you see this video, there should be no question. God what was wrong with that audience??? I would have been up on that stage dancing my ass off!!! Bobby Darin took chances and got "outside the box" and took alot of risks with his music. What a gutsy guy. Play that funky music sexy white boy!!!
Hey, I WAS around! I was 22, still in college. when he died, I remember exactly where I was when I heard the devastating news, I was sitting in my car with the radio on about to go somewhere. I could not believe it because I had no idea he had a bad heart, alot of people did not know. Heck I even remember what I was wearing. Same thing Elvis, was driving home from work when they announced it on the radio. I cried over Bobby but not Elvis, we knew Elvis was going downhill.
100% correct. JoanOfArc14 and HickoryRose--you are true Bobby Darin fans. Keep spreading the good word about him. What would he have accomplished had he lived beyond 37? What a loss. You know he had an IQ off the charts and was given a college scholarship for his ability in science? I'm glad he chose to perform with his musical genius instead!
124bjw, it's my pleasure. My feeling comes from not just loving the guy and his music but profound sadness at his untimely death and the feeling of being cheated by the music industry from seeing and hearing him more when he was alive. They punished him for crossing music genres by refusing to take him seriously and we the public were punished too. Thank God for youtube and a new generation! Let's even the score.
I've lost count of how many times this videos been played xD
God Bless Youtube; actually im an Athiest so I should'nt say that :D But Bobby Darrin was a LOT before my time, In Fact he was before my Mums Time so without Youtube I would not have a clue who he was. :D And he was, IMO better than Frank :)
Sinatra was born in 1915. If had only lived to be 37, til 1952, he would not have accomplished all that he did, and probably not all that Bobby Darin accomplished in his 37 years.
Bobby ROCKED, Sinatra hated Rock;
Bobby had soul , did Sinatra?
Bobby did folk, years before he adopted the hippie look. The list of Bobby's achievements goes on and on. Frank gets the Glory, but Bobby had the Guts.
wow, hey, hold on dadio, i love bobby darin, one son of a gun great singer and performer, but sorry darin fans, THERE IS NO WAY IN THIS WORLD OR ANY OTHER THAT GOOD OLE BOBBY EVEN COMPARES TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, SORRY FOLKS, THE ONLY ONE IN HISTORY THAT EVEN CAN COMPARE TO FRANCIS IS SAMMY, PERIOD, END OF STORY
Chairman of the board? In his prime of physical strength, in the 40's and 50's, Sinatra had what? Anorexic arms, shoulders no wider than maybe 12 inches and could bench press what? Maybe 40 pounds. As for his singing. Be real. Didn't he more or less "talk" all of his songs? C'mon. I'm of Italian descent but our old man taught us to tell the truth instead of following a crowd. Dean Martin could sing. Frankie Valle could sing. Pavorati could sing. Bobbt Darin could sing.
On the outside chance that anyone out there has not seen it. Check out the Feb 1973 (Medley) version (on Johhny Carson). IMHO it is better than this one..... W'Dan
Inspiring! Bobby did not play and sing his music; he WAS his music, full of joy, passion, respect, class, and style. There will never be another like him.
Reading about this final show taping is tough - take a look at Dream Lovers. There was no time for a rehearsal, the show had been cancelled, and his son wasn't allowed to go to it. His friend said he found him in the NBC basement afterward sobbing like a baby because his son had missed it and he knew it would be his last performance. Can you say heart?
To darin45 - According to some sources, he got into the folk/protest stuff in the late 60's and early 70's. 'Not rockabilly.... Also, you say he did " every gender". That would make him bi-sexual. I'm pretty sure you meant, "he did every genre" (pronounced "john-rah" ) OTHERWISE...
Anybody that knows Bobby`s life story would know why he was such a rock-a-billy soul man towards the end....he truely loved music...and did every gender!!! Some people in the music buisness got all pissed off about his diversity...but Bobby didn`t care. He had so little time and so much to express... It was his life and he took the risk and was GOOOOD at it all : )
This last taped performance of Bobby is brilliant, sexy, oooooh so good...rest in peace sweet Bobby Darin, dh
Dude, I'm 43 years old and I never really got into soul until last year. I live in Austin TX, & we have a lot of cool soul bands come thru town. Dumpstafunk ( Ivan Neville) is a great one. The Meters : PBS Porter Batiste Stoltz are great.
Here is my point: SOUL BANDS ARE REAL MUSICIANS DOING REAL ROCK LIKE IT WAS IN THE 60S AND 70S. These are real musicians. Check out anything Motown.
Bobby would have been proud. He would have loved to bring soul to Rock fans.
don't get your balls in a twist but this is my opinion. i did not like his shift to 'soul' style singing in his final days to be current and with it. he was master at his pop style singing - only sinatra was better.
Dude below, i'm 33 and if found out about Bobby when i was looking for a good interpretation of Mack the Knife not knowing Bobby made it big and now he is my absolute Hero.
I'm quite a young chap(30yrs),didnt know that much about Bobby before,as he was abit before my time-but what a performance he gave here!
I grew up with Elvis as a child(not literally, just his music)as my Father is a massive fan of the King and I joined YouTube to view more things by him, stumbbled across this clip of Mr Darin-and I'm very pleased I did!
This will be the first video other than Elvis that will be saved on my Favourite list
One Of The greatest singers/entertainers ever just if he got to live imagine the amount of songs he woulda made more it would be fantastic R.I.P Mr. Bobby Darin
When Bobby was 8 he was stricken with multiple bouts of rheumatic fever, leaving him with a seriously diseased heart. The doctor said that he would be lucky to live past 16. In 1971, he had his first heart surgery. In 1973, around the time of this performance, he would need oxygen administered after his performances. In 1973 he has a clotted heart valve, which was making him weak with low circulation. That's why he did that....
I am a new Bobby Darin fan. I am greatful Kevin Spacey did the movie & made me aware of BD. Who knows, with a big Darin revival, maybe someone will make ANOTHER Bobby Darin movie, and include more detail. Spacey's was ok, the movie BTS is a good place to start. There will surely be a Sandra Dee movie, and that will bring more people to Bobby too.
If that's true, your father had the privilage of playing with one of last true greats of the musical proffession and if you were ever proud of this man you can be proud of the fact that a musical Titan trusted his talent to keep him rocking in his last musical triumph! Congrats to you and your Father.
Those were the days Bobby when I was such a great fan of yours. You have left so many great memories behind and even today when I see your video, it still seems like yesterday. May God keep you in a special place in heaven.
What an outstanding performance. I wasn't lucky enough to see such amazing tallent in person but these dvd's are wonderful. I keep collecting as many BD things as possible. I recently acquired an autographed Multiplication/Irresistable You 45 thats is mint condition. I charish all of my BD items since the late great Bobby Darin is no longer with us. Thanks for all great memories. We miss you!
Bobby thrived when he was a huge talent at an early age. His star exploded in his early to mid 20's when he hit the big time, with rock and roll, mainstream pop, and classic swing. He was 10 years younger than singers in the swing genre, like Sinatra, Dean Martin, Vic Damone, etc. But he was better, and more electic on stage! When he found out some bad events from his past, he changed forever. He became an activist far-leftist, and his music was never the same.
Left wing like Bobby Kennedy & He Wowed them in Vegas until died! Where were you? You don't know much! Next time Google something before you comment! Aloha~
now concerning this last taped performance....OOOOOH my, that foot work and intence passion Bobby had for music--THANK YOU BOBBY***FOR THE MEMORIES***we miss you so, dh
I saw Beyond the Sea also, to me it was more about Kevin Spacey than Bobby, I was disappointed. Spacey was way too old to play Bobby and he should have used a more popular actor. Bobby Darin was the ultimate entertainer, big, way big shoes to fill and Kevin just couldn't do it. I was glad it helped bring Bobby back into the light a little more...Bobby was so gifted. thanks for posting enjoyed it...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well Fuck you. Kevin Spacey was a HUGE Bobby Fan and wanted to make the movie for the past 20 years, and pitched it 36 times, to studios who turned it down. He found a studio who would accept it. Spacey was a LIFELONG Bobby Fan and I thought he did a GREAT JOB. I LOVED The movie. You should know that Spaceys movie was a labor of love and not just a "See what I can make" as quick on a fad. I know Kevin Spacey personally, and he would be hurt by your message. So, I say..FUCK YOU. BOBBY RULES!
Yeah, Spacey IS a Bobby Darin fan, but so am I. But i didn't make a movie of his life and star in it and sing all the songs, so I still have some cred. If Kevin Spacey thinks that Bobby Darin was so good, why did he sing all the songs himslef. I think Brian Setzer is great, but if I sing you Rock this town, you'd think it was a shit song, cos i aon't Brian Setzer (has point been made?) Mikey xx
Dude, you have a BIG problem. Since when has it become a problem to say what you think. He was not dissrespectful at all, you where..Spacey and Darin would distance themselves very quickly from an ass like yourself...Have a great day!
Yes, but everyone must understand the significance & unbelievable contribution this movie made for the continuence of Bobby`s memory!!!!! It revived my Love for Bobby`s music and thousands like me!!!! Kevin is a damn good actor and I am proud of him and love the movie!! Parts of the end are fantacy--didn`t happen-but still a great film in honor of Bobby!!! ***Darin Forever***dh
Just saw Kevin Spacey's take on Bobby Darin in his movie "Beyond the Sea," made a couple of years ago. Kevin is a good lounge singer but he was wise to stay away from BD"s performance here. No way could KS swing out the way Bobby does in this video. It also shows what a complete musician and performer BD was. Thanks for posting it.
I`ll give you my opinion on your Q? In this magnifisent performance of "Mack is Back" -- Bobby was in-touch with his Rock-n-soul side!! He would perform the standards for those that were with him in the begining and then lead into his loose & groovy, soulful songs!! He was so keen in knowing what his audiance wanted and I love him for that!! The world lost a one in a million sooo early in life & we--his fans--miss him with such passion...........dh

I still love listening to Bobby Darin and even appreciate him more as I got older. What a loss - it always seems the really special ones leave too soon. But at least we have their music, right??
ritade45 2 years ago 2
Mack the Knife is STILL the single greatest
pop record of all time, 50 yrs later!! Listen to it
over and over, the performance is superb and the
arrangement is fabulous!
MultiDKenny 2 years ago
People, you have to stop comparing Darin with Sinatra. It's not about who's got the better voice, it's about style. I think it's also about who's the better entertainer. If you see this video, there should be no question. God what was wrong with that audience??? I would have been up on that stage dancing my ass off!!! Bobby Darin took chances and got "outside the box" and took alot of risks with his music. What a gutsy guy. Play that funky music sexy white boy!!!
JoanOfArc14 2 years ago 4
I was driving a cab in Miami in 73 when I heard he
had died and I had to pull off the road for a few minutes.
If you were around at the time you would understand
how important he was in the entertainment world.
He was a class act!
MultiDKenny 2 years ago

124bjw 2 years ago
124bjw, it's my pleasure. My feeling comes from not just loving the guy and his music but profound sadness at his untimely death and the feeling of being cheated by the music industry from seeing and hearing him more when he was alive. They punished him for crossing music genres by refusing to take him seriously and we the public were punished too. Thank God for youtube and a new generation! Let's even the score.

God Bless Youtube; actually im an Athiest so I should'nt say that :D But Bobby Darrin was a LOT before my time, In Fact he was before my Mums Time so without Youtube I would not have a clue who he was. :D And he was, IMO better than Frank :)
JackWhite1993 2 years ago
Sinatra was born in 1915. If had only lived to be 37, til 1952, he would not have accomplished all that he did, and probably not all that Bobby Darin accomplished in his 37 years.
Bobby ROCKED, Sinatra hated Rock;
Bobby had soul , did Sinatra?
Bobby did folk, years before he adopted the hippie look. The list of Bobby's achievements goes on and on. Frank gets the Glory, but Bobby had the Guts.
HickoryRose 2 years ago 4
wow, hey, hold on dadio, i love bobby darin, one son of a gun great singer and performer, but sorry darin fans, THERE IS NO WAY IN THIS WORLD OR ANY OTHER THAT GOOD OLE BOBBY EVEN COMPARES TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, SORRY FOLKS, THE ONLY ONE IN HISTORY THAT EVEN CAN COMPARE TO FRANCIS IS SAMMY, PERIOD, END OF STORY
beriflor 2 years ago
No doubt
dawnbirchgirl 2 years ago
Chairman of the board? In his prime of physical strength, in the 40's and 50's, Sinatra had what? Anorexic arms, shoulders no wider than maybe 12 inches and could bench press what? Maybe 40 pounds. As for his singing. Be real. Didn't he more or less "talk" all of his songs? C'mon. I'm of Italian descent but our old man taught us to tell the truth instead of following a crowd. Dean Martin could sing. Frankie Valle could sing. Pavorati could sing. Bobbt Darin could sing.

I couldn't AGREE with you MORE... W'Dan

Bobby was a Mack Daddy .
HickoryRose 2 years ago
don't get your balls in a twist but this is my opinion. i did not like his shift to 'soul' style singing in his final days to be current and with it. he was master at his pop style singing - only sinatra was better.

I mean why did he try to keep the circulation in his right hand? I don't understand it...
LariFary24 3 years ago

ScotchyMcDewars1979 3 years ago

Why does it jump between Bo Diddley and Splish Splash?
freedom509rwk 4 years ago
I`ll give you my opinion on your Q? In this magnifisent performance of "Mack is Back" -- Bobby was in-touch with his Rock-n-soul side!! He would perform the standards for those that were with him in the begining and then lead into his loose & groovy, soulful songs!! He was so keen in knowing what his audiance wanted and I love him for that!! The world lost a one in a million sooo early in life & we--his fans--miss him with such passion...........dh
dhdarin45 3 years ago 2
