  • I'm not sure if this helps, but after searching for local parkour videos here on youtube, I found a parkour group on facebook and will be meeting them tomorrow for a training run. I never would have been able to meet these people who share similar interests and hobbies with me if it hadn't been for youtube and facebook.. I'm thankful. It's not necessary but in order for my tomorrow to have plans, it certainly was necessary.

  • That's a great example of what sites like YT can do for us.

I'm met quite a few local people, i would never have met, if it hadn't been for Twitter & YT.

I've watched a few parkour videos myself. I find that fascinating :)

  • I'm not on YouTube because I need it... I'm on YouTube because I still want to make videos... I'm not sure I want a lot of relationships on here to get any deeper. I'm kind of a loner. Still, if there are great interesting people out there I often find them after sifting through channels that don't appeal to me...

  • I didn't come here looking for people, or relationships either. But, there are so many interesting people here, it seems a pity not to get to know them a little :)

  • Well done. I am glad we had our email chat!

  • Thanks. I think you helped push that chat to another level :)

  • Interesting videos...yours and the LONG one...:-)

I have many theories as to why people stay and why they move on. One of my "theories" why people move on, (that I haven't heard discussed yet) is that people can get really hurt by others out here. After experiencing the kind of pain that changes who you are, it can make it difficult to come back to the "scene of the crime" so to speak. Ahhhh...the risks of opening yourself up to others and being alive...:-)

  • Thanks.

I know how you feel about the haters etc. They are a big turn off for a lot of people here, which is a great pity.

I totally understand why they make some leave YT & that's something that does need to be recognised.

if only that were not so :)

  • I wasn't referring to "haters". I was thinking of "friendships" and the levels of "love" that happens here on YT. Once hurt from the people you trusted makes it hard to stay around. :-)

  • Hmmm.... Are comments broken again. Too bad, because I just left one, it just hasn't shown up yet...

  • Oh - Hey! That one worked!

Well, I think the first one was something about enjoying the 55 minute video and discussing it over an email thread with a bunch of friends.

  • I've heard other people say that the comments are playing up again. But i've not seen that myself.

Ditto on your second point :)

  • It's true that I need to find new people. So many that where my 'YouTube world' have hung up their cameras and moved on. That said, I'd never claim to have made real friends through Youtube, just a decent bunch of passing acquaintances!

  • A lot of people i used to really enjoy have moved on too. I still stay subbed to them just in case though. Well, you never know? :)

  • I think I started making videos as a way to practice my video editing, the friendships came later with exchanging comments etc. People often moan that it is not the same, people have left but that is only natural, but there are plenty still wanting to join!:)

  • The friendships came later for me too. It was only when i started getting involved in collab videos & one in particular, that the real interaction & friendships started to take shape.

We all moan & say that things were better in the old days. That works with music, movies etc etc :)

  • I only interact with a few folks outside of youtube:-)

  • Some is a lot better than none :)

  • Wow that video explained the youtube that i try to explain to ppl all the time when im talking about it yet never can convey as well i think it will be sent to the next person that ask me about yt.

I came to late for the "golden age of yt"but i think for everyone that makes videos when they first get into it untill they need a break is their own golden age.

I have a few groups i keep up with outside of here it does change the dynamic of the friendships but makes them better in my opinion.

  • Yes, it really "gets it" doesn't it.

I found it really refreshing to see a person take YT seriously. Sure they talked about the silly stuff, but at least they recognised that there's more to YT than just that.

Good point about your own personal golden age :)

  • That video got a lot of us thinking this weekend, hasn't it? I won't comment more than that since we've been involved in an email chain! :)

  • It certainly did. I'm very glad i posted the link.

An email chain eh? Sounds good :)

  • I don't really have a 'circle' of friends anymore. When I first came to youtube that sort of group had formed but I've changed my idea of what I want to do with my videos so many times that those core friends have sort of faded into oblivion.

  • That's a pity.

For me, the group i got involved with were/are all like minded people. That group has expanded & quite recently too.

I wouldn't be surprised if what you said about your videos had a bearing on this. My friends did all make fairly similar videos, not all though & some of them hardly make any video at all these days! :)

  • I know of one group that originally met on YouTube, became regulars on Stickam, are still there and have now met up twice in person at one of their houses. I too hope that this kind of thing is going on amongst many groups. Good video, Andy!

  • Thanks Mike.

That's good to know about those Stickam users. I'd hate to think that i was alone in this.

For me, that group of YT friends is one of the best things to have come out of my whole YT experience :)

  • it really started to get good when the students themselves started to get involed.thank for letting us know.

  • My pleasure Stuart :)

  • The college analogy rocked. And, yep, those 55 minutes sped by. I may even watch it a third time sometimes soon.

Speaking of golden ages... my understanding is that television's golden age is that it took place during a time when there were also people declaring that TV was just a fad. It was also easier to get into that industry at the time, from what I've read.

Struck by the similarities, I guess.

  • Ps. I should proof read for grammatical mistakes before I hit "post comment" - GAH!

  • I nearly watched it again today Curt & will certainly do so again.

I thought that college analogy was very relevant too, as were some of the others.

I suppose if you're lucky enough to get in on the ground floor of anything like TV, or YT that makes a big difference to the opportunities you have & your whole experience. Yet another good example :)

  • 2006 and 2007 were good years in Youtube.

  • I would certainly agree with you there. But, as i said, things & people move on & new people are arriving all the time :)

  • I think any community we join in life we do cause something is missing.

    As humans we crave interaction.

  • I think when the community was in the most discussed and most watched it was easier to find new people.

  • Actually, when that original video was made they do show the most discussed etc lists & mention how that helps to find people.

That aspect is sorely missed :)

  • I certainly agree that we need interaction. But, i think that's what keeps us here, rather than what brings us here in the first place :)
