Oh my Gosh if Al Gore saw this he would faint!! I can't imagine how many innocent wildlife were killed by that horrible pollution!!!!! You should be ashamed by the gigantic Carbon Footprint you made!!! I'll bet that at least 3 1/2 species of insects have gone extinct because of this travesty!!!
Wow, they don't make them like that anymore. All I see now are cheap Homelites at Home Depot selling for under $150. Complete junk with cheap plastic parts.. Anything with Homelite or Echo written on it is best avoided these days. Now I stick with Stihl.
@vio2112 Do not lump Echo with Chi-Homies. Absolutely no comparison. Stihl will gratefully take your money.
Some folks don''t know that these old insect-foggers will run happily on mix ratio much higher than 16:1, with modern mix oil. No, you don't need to see visible smoke, that's lunacy.
I wish I could go into Homedepot right now and buy a Homelite just like that but I can't because all there stuff is made in china. What the hell happened to Homelite? they make shit now.
The piston and cylander is fine, those old saws smoke like that because they run on 8 ounces of 30 weight motor oil which makes more smoke than 2 stroke oil, try leaning the carb out some it will rev higer and have more power ,not too much though because you will cause damage to the piston if its too lean on oil you still want some smoke thats a sign its getting good lubrication.
Do you know when it was made? I have an old blue Homelite from '64, according to the serial number. Yours looks older than mine. That's when Homelites were good saws. Thanks for the video.
Nope. There is a piece of metal that pushes the exhaust off the side a bit. The Homelites of similar design where not equipped with a muffler. Some did have spark arrestors but thats about it.
coshyno the super wiz 66 all it has for a muffler is a cover and a screen that is about 1 inch thick and square in shape thats all the muffler they have
My grandfather had a similar saw he used to make a living logging for many years. I used it on cutting the first log from a fall. The saw still runs, has a throttle lock and deflector in lieu of a muffler.
Hi guy, easy fix if not to bad, if the head is't hurt to bad it can be hone'd out. If the piston is's scored to bad, or the grouve's are't to deep it can be smooth'ed up, and put new ring's. Make the gasket's. About a three hour fix, if no trouble. Don't mind the spelling
Thanks a bunch. Good information to know. I'm not in a position to repair it at the moment, money-wise but at some point in the future I hope to do as you described.
The piston was down when the saw was sitting. when you take the muffer off that's what you see. The piston is pitted from mosture. When you turned it over this made the mark's on the piston. It did not hurt the rings to bad, a saw will not run if th ring's are scored. I ran these saw in 1960, a very good saw, that's in nice shape. I've lost a piston many time's, i would get the part's for it. I fix'ed it that night. back to work in the morning.
Yes the sound of these is awesome, I can rember my ears fluttering sometimes and now i can see why I am almost deaf. These old saws are neat but boy the chains on some of them we ran were huge, you could almost feel each tooth as it bit into wood. Used to cut rakers way down to gain speed but these old saws would grab and damn near drag you over tree if you took too much out of chain. Last time I run a gear drive, homelite, with old style chains, after third cut my fingers already numb.
More sounds! I love this chainsaw, I've been looking for one like it on eBay for a while now. The sound of this thing is the best part of it. You've gotta make more vids - I love the sound with it in half choke :) Sounds so raw!
Well well well: I just spent 45 mins looking at wood-splitting vids that led me here. THANK YOU! Good to see the 'real deal'. I Live in Northern Ontario, and I appreciate your saw. You can lean that out just a bit more, as long as it's under load. Great cold start-up, great sound!
This chainsaw sounds GREAT. I love the sound of the bigger engines, especially with partial choke running. More videos of this bad boy! I love the way it sounds. Maybe with more choke? :)

@workensmart They ended up selling out to John Deere in the late 80s. Then Deere sold them to a china based company. It's sad really.

it has exellent piston & cylinder, it just has too rich oiled gas in it.
i put just a spoonful too much oil in my gas and it poured white smoke out.
sounds very healthy.

are you gonna fix it ?
skaterdude1229 3 years ago
It would not run if the piston was scored., I'm sure the compresion is not up to par. The smoke is oil, that's good, this run's 20:1 mix.

This saw must defy physics then. lol

Your piston and cylinder is that bad?
SmackdownVsRaw3 3 years ago
It's heavily scored and pitted. The heavy smoke level is also a result of the oil/fuel mix.
